Valsuelm
Casting a live action Anime movie with predominately Caucasians would make sense. it would make more sense to make the story take place somewhere other than in Newport City/Japan I haven't watched Ghost in the Shell in over a dozen years. I recall it being a good movie but I don't recall the locale being overly central to the plot. Really, I don't care where it takes place or what color/race whoever is cast is in any movie unless it's central to the story. That said, I do not expect modern Hollywood to make a good live action version of Ghost in the Shell. They might surprise me and I hope they do, but I doubt they will. sorophx
the location wasn't central to the plot in the movie, because Oshii just didn't have enough screen time to put all the plot hooks, that are present in the manga, in. in the original manga Shirow focuses more on the world and global political and economic processes, than on the story. every chapter is pretty much its own story, save for a few plot lines (like the one with the Puppeteer) that go through multiple chapters. seriously, guys, I don't expect you to drop everything and read the manga, but IMO it's rather pointless to bring up the movie, since it's so different from Shirow's vision. Oshii had to work within strict time constraints of a feature film so he cut everything that wasn't central to the Puppeteer plot. that almost killed the movie, and it certainly would've if done by a lesser director. some scenes just don't make sense without reading the manga first and knowing Shirow's sources of inspiration. Fair enough. I have not read the manga (forgot there was one), and likely never will. Not due to lack of interest but lack of time. My backlog of things to read is already at the point where I'm set for the next few years at least. That said, I very much appreciate that written source material is nearly always superior to someone's cartoon/movie/play interpretation of it. And perhaps one day I will get around to reading the Ghost in the Shell manga. Of all the anime movies I've seen I recall Ghost having one of the most interesting worlds. LadyCrimson
Equilibrium - sci-fi, dystopian world films from 2001 (or thereabouts) with Christian Bale. Never heard of it, gave it a shot. I can see why I may have never heard of it. The acting was generally fine, but yeah...you can tell where the main influence/s come from. It had a few moments due to Bale's "awesome-cheekbones-of-seriousness-method-acting" and I did like the concept of emotion vs. no emotion (Vulcan does it better tho) but pretty mediocre. Also ... "gun-fu." 1 “Things are as they are. He was still experimenting with the Gun-Fu, but decided the Shotokan based style they used in Equilibrium was a bit too stylistic and stiff, so with Ultraviolet I believe he said they based the Gun-Fu on Wing Chun to get it smoother and more circular. Sarex
Scarlett Johansson has been signed for a Ghost in the Shell film by Dreamworks. What in the ****ing hell...........WHY?!? sorophx
probably, because she's considered the only action star capable of generating enough buzz around the movie (after starring in Avengers and Lucy). I'd prefer Kate Beckinsale, personally, if I could choose. 1 Walsingham said: I was struggling to understand ths until I noticed you are from Finland. sorophx
c'mon, if you had said Rhona Mitra, I'd have probably agreed. look, she basically IS Motoko: but Jessica Biel? she's not a kick-ass. 2 Walsingham said: I was struggling to understand ths until I noticed you are from Finland. LadyCrimson
Predestination. (haven't read the story) Hm. Mixed feelings. On the one hand, nice that it's not just an action flick. On the other hand, I did figure out the "omg" moment long before the moment and it's yet another "it's a paradox that really shouldn't be possible" type of time travel thingies. Not to mention you can see all kinds of possible solutions other than the one they seem to put forward. So...yes, I liked it, but sometimes I wish they'd go back to making time travel about Back to the Future or Terminator vs. trying to be so smart they end up not seeming that smart after all. Where the latter tends to work better on the page than in a movie. “Things are as they are. LadyCrimson
It's not all that clever or complicated (or original w/time travel) and instead it's mostly an exercise in obfuscation. It's not a film tactic I'm generally fond of, if used in excess. This doesn't make it a bad movie nor do I blame the film for taking that direction. They were trying something different. But the film itself isn't very entertaining as a film, imo, outside of the "wtf" and PoV discussions it may inspire afterwards as to "what really happened" and "what it means." eg, it's a mind**** movie. If you think it's brilliant in this regard, you're going to like it. If you don't, it's just meh.Btw, I'm not claiming I understood everything 1st-view. I am not so smart, especially since I don't always understand the jargon such fiction is based on. My husband understood (he's my personal-explainer during some movies) and he spent a lot of the movie frowning. He tends to react to too much tech-jargon similar to the way I react to something like the bio-science explanations in ST:TNG episode "Genesis." Sometimes you should let the fiction aspect just be fiction and stop trying to make it sound like real/proven science. 1 “Things are as they are.
