Initial reception can only be described as very poor. One could extrapolate that very hightly paid people were sent in to make EA soup out of the project, which simultaneously makes everything suck more and be more marketable. The trial and error gameplay would be one indication. Na na na na na na ... greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER. That is all.

Orogun01
It's better than Thi4f Does the game suck completely or just as a Thief game? If that makes any sense I haven't played the previous games; I think I only played the original for about 5 seconds before I decided it wasn't for me. The game does offer a lot of options to customize your own experience, it literary lets create your custom difficulty which was a big bonus. The only real critique is about the levels being too small and as a result the exploration being too linear. OTOH you can't really have graphical fidelity and deep exploration. It's a solid game I just don't think is for everyone and it's definitively not for fans of the originals. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.

Hurlshort
I'm bummed that they didn't manage to do what they did with Deus Ex. But I wasn't that attached to the Thief series either.

A pure stealth game wasn't going to attract that much of a crowd, my guess that they struggled trying to make the game marketable. HoonDing
I like the game's art direction and it seems to ooze an eerie atmosphere, but I dislike the main character looking like Marilyn Manson. I'm more likely to play this in the future than Dishonored. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

Yeah, that one really surprised me. Every time RPS mentioned the new Thief in the past, not-so-nice things were said -- it's good to hear it has some redeeming qualities. It's not really my cup of tea, so I'll wait until it's on sale.

Janmanden
I guess this is turning out to be one of those love-hate games by reviewers, which will put the metacritic score (which is a pretty bad measure of anything) about 6.5 - 7. It sounds like the joy of the game really boils down to how forgiving you are. I have never really played a game that was perfect, quite the contrary, every one of my favorite games have annoyed me excruciatingly at some points, but eventually I learnt to avoid cornering myself into those situations again.. Unfortunately a little late - Before I started playing computer games more than twenty years ago I had lots of hair.. Sounds like there is going to be considerable hairloss involved in playing this game, but maybe I need to focus on the hair between my toes, in my nose and ears.. hmmmmmm.. Graphics look nice and there is even some boobs and porn in the game.. And apparently a helluva lot of freedom of configuration of difficulty. -- On a discount I'd try it. Raithe
I think it comes down to a story that you pretty much forget, but the individual missions are usually quite good (if you approach it in the pure sneaky style attempt). There are irritations about some of it, notably the context-sensitive button meaning that places you think you should be able to jump you can't. Or small piles of stuff you can't actually climb over where an asthmatic cripple probably could. The freedom of configuration is quite serious in the options available to turn on/off pretty much everything. "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum." SadExchange
I almost preordered this game but after seeing some early reviews and impressions, I decided to hold off till a good sale and start over on my play through of Dishonored which I have been quite enjoying due to the freedom allowed. The entire point of Thief was that you're a scrawny little man trying to steal things, not a SPESS MUHREEN whose bulging veins whip out of his skin to lash enemies to death (why wasn't that in Gears of War?) Gorgon
As I'm sure you are aware the major complaints are that it's linear and you get context buttons and button mashing sequences. The thief games always tried to give you exploration, in this case they opted to make it look as pretty as the puny new gen consoles were able, and sacrificed core gameplay elements in the process. IndiraLightfoot
So, eight hours into the game, and as some of you know, I'm a Dishonored-fan! Well, Thief 4 is a mixed bag. I've done a couple of story chapters and a few side missions. The graphics are for the most part lovely. Overall, it's a bit too dark and dreary, or should I say badly lit cul-de-sac? Still, the environments are fantastic. As for Garrett, he looks a bit too much like a proto-Batman, which I reckon is a bit of a downer. And don't ask me why, but many leading characters have blackened eyes, as in bad-makeup, not cool. Personally, I think the number of frequently used functions and corresponding keys are a slightly too overwhelming. It could have been simpler. Well, about the gameplay itself. It's a very good game, and a more than decent Thief for the 2010s, but it lacks the flow, freedom and finesse that Dishonored had in spades. Also, the AI of the baddies is less impressive. It's often inconsistent and nonsensical, almost. I play at the mid-difficulty level, with most options on. However, with the lean function and even no focus points at all, I can sneak pretty close to most hostiles. They rarely open doors or collaborate (however, their hands stick out through doors, so I can see where they are, hehe). Whether your detected or not is a bit roughshod. Sometimes, they feel you through walls, other times, not at all. So far, I rarely use anything in my inventory, as opposed to Dishonored, where it was the hub of the game, almost (disregarding certain challenging playthroughs). My worst criticism, however, is the lack of freedom. It's almost as linear as Bioshock Infinite, and even weirder: Garrett can't jump up on things or climb the simplest gutter pipes. The game decides for you where you can jump or where you can shoot a rope arrow into some wooden beam (almost never); essentially this cripples the seemingly agile, fit and skilful Garrett. This flaw is hard to swallow, but as long as you buy that and just play, Thief is at least better than Bioshock Infinite (perhaps not the story, as I have just scratched upon that one - so far, it seems New Age-y and thin). I recommend the game as being quite decent, but perhaps not worth the full asking price on Steam. I'm glad I managed to get it at half price. Tigranes
Thanks for the detailed report. Sadly, definitely sounds like im better off playing the many great fan missions / dark mod for some new thief. I'm not rich enough to pay for something so thoroughly mediocre.
