Nepenthe
Either their soldiers in a war, or civilians engaged in a criminal action, not between. This. Though there are precedents of regimes finding this binary choice too restricting, such as in the case of Hitler's Commando Order. Neither. Also think about the number lost because of the recruits that joined the various terrorist organizations specifically because of the fact that we use torture. I doubt that whatever the U.S. do, islamic extremists won't be lacking for recruits for at least another generation or so. You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that? Walsingham
For ****'s sake, I thought we'd laid the ghost on the torture issue. One more time, for the cheap seats: There is no dilemma. It is not a choice between using torture and saving lives. Torture doesn't bloody work. It can break a man but it doesn't provide useful information from the kind of people you need. Nor does it turn people against their former comrades. Hate to break it to you wannabe special agents, but tea and a kind word has got more key information out of terrorists than any amount of beatings and nail pulling. Perpetuating this debate directly props up the use of torture. TORTURE IS WRONG AND IT DOESN'T WORK. Enough already. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp. Wrath of Dagon
Hmm, I can believe you or the former CIA director and Attorney General. Hmm, what to do? Either their soldiers in a war, or civilians engaged in a criminal action, not between. This. Though there are precedents of regimes finding this binary choice too restricting, such as in the case of Hitler's Commando Order. From your link: While at the time under both Hague and Geneva it was legal to execute "spies and saboteurs" disguised in civilian clothes, So no, it's not always either a legitimate soldier or a common criminal. Monte Carlo
Would you rather be an American captured in Iran or an Iranian captured in America? AT LEAST WE'RE BETTER THAN IRAN!!! CELEBRATE OUR ENLIGHTENMENT!!! THEN AGAIN, IRAN IS OK TOO BECAUSE VLACH VLAD TEPES WAS WORSE!!! OH NO BUT GENGHIZ KHAN WAS WORSE THAN VLACH VLAD SO HE'S ACTUALLY OK TOO!!! Good lord above the "at least we're better than" argument is a load of horse excrement. Yeah, I'm a greater humanitarian than Adolf Hitler/ Stalin/ Pol Pot/ Caligula/ Torquemada/ Timur. Wow, such an achievement. Gfted1
OBL's last minutes on tape. Osama Bin Laden's final moments on tape: Navy SEALs used helmet cams during attack. BY Christina Boyle DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Friday, May 13th 2011, 9:50 AM The 25 men who attacked the Al Qaeda leader and killed him last month had small cameras attached to their helmets, and officials are reconstructing the video footage to understand exactly what happened inside the terrorist's Pakistan hideout. The tapes show that the guesthouse was the only place where the Navy SEALs encountered a firefight, when one of Bin Laden's couriers opened fire and was swiftly gunned down, according to CBS News. In the main building, no shots were fired even though the occupants had access to a stash of weapons. The first glimpse of the most wanted man in the world came when Bin Laden emerged onto a third-floor landing dressed in a tan robe and white undershirt. Navy SEALs fired at him, but missed, and then chased him into his bedroom. The first commando through the door was met by Bin Laden's daughters, and he pulled them aside. A second SEAL was then rushed by the terror group leader's wife, who either ran toward him or was pushed from behind, and he shoved her to one side before shooting Bin Laden in the chest. A third SEAL entered and shot him in the head. It took about 40 minutes to swoop down on the Abbottabad complex, kill Bin Laden and gather his top secret files into bags. Among the documents are the names of terrorist operatives who were not known to U.S. intelligence and a 12-page journal with handwritten notes. "He kept all that information and he kept all of the data, computers, hard drives, and this is what we're analyzing and it shows that this focus was clearly the United States," said Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.). "I'm your biggest fan, Ill follow you until you love me, Papa"

Tale
So he didn't fire on them? So was the intent to kill or did they simply not feel capture would be safe (he might have rigged bombs, he might have been holding a gun but never fired, etc)? WDeranged
Osama Bin Laden's final moments on tape: Navy SEALs used helmet cams during attack. I notice this article is still using the staged "reaction shot" of the president and staff supposedly watching the live feed. It frustrates me how important details get lost in the movie narrative, in years to come people will remember that photo as "the moment"...tsk. *edit* added link and also noticed an update to the latest baby fondling incident. My favourite bit of insanity is, "One of the many TSA criticisms I hadn't gotten to yet is based on the report last month that one of the "behavioral indicators" TSA uses to identify "high-risk passengers" is whether a person complains about airport security procedures" Because terrorists always loudly complain to security staff before blowing up an airliner. Gfted1
Porn found in OBL treasure trove. By MARTHA RADDATZ (@martharaddatz) May 13, 2011 A stash of pornography was found among the trove of evidence seized from Osama bin Laden's Abbottabad compound by U.S. Navy SEALs, according to a report confirmed by ABC News. The existence of the pornography stash, which one U.S. official told ABC News was "huge," was first reported by Reuters. The official said the pornographic material was found in a wooden box in bin Laden's bedroom and included electronically recorded videos. Though bin Laden's compound did not have an internet connection or other hard-wired networks, a video recovered by the SEALs and publicized by the White House showed bin Laden watching himself on a television while inside the compound, suggesting those in the compound could play back videos. The discovery of the pornographic videos is just the latest in a steady stream of information gleaned from evidence obtained by the SEALs during the mission that killed bin Laden nearly two weeks ago, from invaluable intelligence on al Qaeda operations to embarrassing personal revelations about the terror leader. Officials are analyzing one million pages of data recovered and said they've learned more about al Qaeda in the past ten days than in the last ten years combined. The cache of electronic and handwritten materials includes numerous hallmark al Qaeda plots including attacks on infrastructure targets such as water supply and transportation including rail and air, in what one official described as a "strategic guide for how to attack the U.S." Recently, officials said the al Qaeda leader wanted to find a way to kill President Obama and had aspired to attack the U.S. rail system. A "professional journal" apparently handwritten by bin Laden also revealed that he encouraged attacks against smaller cities in the U.S. and was in communication with the Yemeni branch of al Qaeda, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which U.S. officials have recently described as the greatest threat to America. The al Qaeda leader even allegedly tallied how many American lives it would cost to force a U.S. withdrawal from the Arab world, according to officials cited in the AP report.
