Not England-lite?

They speak French(among other languages) there and eat croissants, no?

I thought the entire country is bilingual. Like Belgium, with the difference that it actually works.

However, the writing has always been typically crap.

:)

Compared to?

When compared to most other game companies they are miles and miles and miles ahead.

I'm not sure about "most" companies, but their writing isn't all bad. Just a bigger percent of it than we'd like to.

And, if I am ignorant about someone he's not that good or important. Sorry.

Your own ignorance doesn't say anything about someone else's quality or importance.

It's perhaps for the best that Bethesda's writing is horrible, otherwise BioWare might have been put out of business long ago. ;)

That said, Michael Kirkbride was a good Bethesda writer. He cooked up a large amount of lore and wrote a lot of in-game books. Same goes for Julian LeFay, who practically invented the Elder Scrolls.

EDIT: And indeed, TLJ was great. It's practically the Planescape: Torment of adventure games. :)

Well, yeah, of course it's nothing but an opinion. Wasn't that what you were asking for when you replied "compared to"?

I thought you were comparing games to movies and books. Not other games.

As for JRPGs, I sure as hell have enjoyed a few, but it was never, ever for the writing. Of course, dodgy translations may be to blame for that.

I loved the Zelda games. Haven't played on since Ocarina of time though.

The Longest Journey was awesome, don't diss the R-man!

I stand corrected...... :x

Well, personally, I feel that comparing the vast majority of game writing to well written books and films isn't even worth doing at this point. The art of writing for games is just still too undeveloped, I guess.

Zelda games are generally awesome and all but they are not RPGs. Besides, the writing in the Zelda games was just a very basic background to get the gameplay going. The writing in those games was just functional, and best if ignored.

Finally, regarding The Longest Journey, I don't think it was a particularly good game, in the sense that its core gameplay mechanics just weren't very good. What I think The Longest Journey did well was the writing, as its character development was comparatively rich and engaging and its plot development did a very good job of keeping the player engaged. I think TLJ is one of only a handful of games where the writing managed to make its characters feel like real people and not just a collection of standard archetypes.

What do you mean? You don't like point & click?

Anyway, as highly regarded as TLJ is, Broken Sword 1 > TLJ in every aspect.

Yes, you can't judge video game writing in isolation, it's not like a book. To me you need good quest design to support good writing, otherwise it's kind of pointless.

You can bet your ass that most of the blame is on the bad translations... Not saying that's the case for all JRPGs... It's same like other games, some have **** story some have excellent story, but most of them are just rippoffs of classic books o:)

Somebody should make a crpg where you get to the play the unknown dark evil instead of a dweeby hero type.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
