Game Design Stuff You Hate

I don't like or dislike crafting inherently; it really depends on how its done.

I'm not wild about the scavenger hunt aspect of most crafting in games though. And I'm not wild about the "keep trying combinations and wasting your raw materials until you can make that low level armor that is worse than the clothes you started out in!" method of crafting in some games.

But the only time I think it breaks the game is when you are forced to spend an inordinate amount of time crafting just to get decent equipment.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

I have a book of knots which I'm learning right now.

This begs the question of course: why are studying a book of knots? Just a personal desire to better your knowledge? OR is it some bondage thing? Or what? A nautical bent?

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Maybe all three! A personal desire to increase ones knowledge of nautical bondage!

GAMES WITH MULTIPLE CONTROLS - I love Fallout 3. I really do. I also hate Fallout 3. Why? I can't play and drink beer at the same time. Shame on you.

What are you talking about? Are you Trying to play with keyboard+mouse and gamepad at the same time?

We bipeds are an inefficient design. Intelligent Design my arse.

Any hoot, another thing I hate is changes due to censorship. THe Japanesse version of Fallout 3 will not have the bomb explode in Megaton for some odd reason.

I don't think it is odd, per se.

Of course it is odd. Its like it is odd for Fallout 3 to be banned in India. Two headed cows and a nuclear bomb? Damn, cultural sensitivity.

SO wait, are you saying cultural sensitivity, often to an absurd degree is odd? I think its totally predictable. Many people seem unable to seperate the fantasy of a game world from the reality of the real world. I personally think its totally ridiculous, but its definitely not odd or unusal.

I'm left handed. My left hand is using the mouse to aim, direct the character. My right hand is for the keyboard, you know walking and picking stuff up and accessing the PIPboy. I've only got two hands, not enough radiation exposure I'm afraid.

I'm thinking of buying a five litre refrigerated Camelbak with a drinking tube and filling it with Peroni to add to the wastelands / survivalist vibe.

Save points. I forgot about those suckers, because I hate them so much that I will not buy/play a game that has 'em. Wouldn't play Far Cry because when I tried the demo, I spent 2 hours dying on the beach trying to discover an invisible "save point". Dumped Diablo 2 because of the danged save points ... and respawning enemies?? What's with that? Bah.

Auto-match enemy leveling? Never again. Worst. Idea. Ever.

I don't much care for crafting either, but I don't hate it. If I run into a game that forces me to craft, THEN I will hate it.

I like NPC's, and I like romances... but only if they are actually romances and not just a couple of lines of dialogue and fade to black. (Hear that, Obsidian??)

Oddly enough, in Fallout 3 I'm not using the companions at all. They just seem to get in the way, and ... I dunno... it feels like it should be a lone wastedweller's journey. Usually I love a big party.

This mostly applies to strategy/action and some adventure games, but can apply to any genre: Mandatory timed/countdown-clock missions/levels.

I absolutely loathe them and any game that has more than one (maybe two) I will toss in the trashcan.

I like save points if they are done carefully. Not just before an unskippable sequence obviously. If I know that not too far back is an autosave or save point, I can immerse myself more in the game and not have to press quicksave every time I feel I have done something slightly noteworthy. There is no call to disable independent saves though, Save points only work if the game gets the difficulty setting just right. Often that is not the case.

God, yes. Time limts and escort-the-helpless-npc... who invariably moves at half the speed of your character/party, runs into the open to get killed, and does absolutely nothing to help or protect themselves during combat.

I took this job because I thought you were just a legend. Just a story. A story to scare little kids. But you're the real deal. The demon who dares to challenge God.

So what the hell do you want? Don't seem to me like you're out to make this stinkin' world a better place. Why you gotta kill all my men? Why you gotta kill me?

Nothing personal. It's just revenge.

Minigames :shifty:

Browsing through boxes of old games, I considered briefly for a moment to replay Tombraider: Legends. Then I remembered that it was riddled with minigames. I really, really hate minigames that feels exactly like what they are, minigames. It is rarely done well :(

Huh? Am I forgetting something, because I cannot remember those... :(

I think the technical term for them is "Interactive Cutscenes". Just as fun as doing tax returns.

Ohh... The quick-time-events... Yeah, those got annoying... :(

I like min games. Kotor's Pazaak is great.

Enemies that level with you. Just plain lame design.

End bosses that are overkill. Yes they are suppose to be hard but not godly.

Characters that can not die. Everyone should in the game should be able to kill. If it breaks the game, then designers need to design their game better.

I'm thinking of RPGs here but games that have a short play time. Whatever happen to RPGs where you had 50+ hours of game play before the end?

the shoehorned love interest

Quick time events if they are done badly

When you are given a mundane task but you are required to go to mount doom and back then fly to the moon just to finish the quest (oh hammer for ZF I HATE YOU!)

Games that make Swords more powerful than the gun

Escort missions with an npc that's been hit so hard with the stupid bat that they think they are superman

Valves infamous puzzle of electrified water and movable objects

When the NPC MUST do everything... I mean when you are forced to walk all over creation doing stuff that in the real world would be dealt with by employees of the company or government you work for.

Stupidly scaling bosses (Lost Oddesy's First boss required an hour of grinding to beat)

Making single player be Multiplayer with AI fighters and a very tenuous connection to the story

When theres a huge build up to a certain thing happening in the plot only to have everything turned on it's ear in the last 25% of the game in favor of somthing else.

Invisible walls, common couldn't you at least give a fence or something?

In FPS's forced use of a gun (Cod4 kinda did this in that if you used anything other than the M4 SopMod you had trouble with ammo)

Making a complex system that the player MUST get perfect otherwise they will be screwed. (Hitman)

Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition!

Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.

That causes it's own restraints, and makes progression already more of a nightmare than it is... I don't believe you really thought about the impact of what you're saying before you said it... Think about it, and you'll see it is almost 100% impractical.

I came up with Crate 3.0 technology.

Crate 4.0 - we shall just have to wait and see.

No, no it isn't. A good designer can do it. If they actually want to. It's lazy, or poor effort on deisgners who make thinsg unkillable. And, yes, I know BIo is guilty of it. Doesn't make it right.
