Movies You Have Seen Lately

I'm going to watch the directors cut of Payback later today. I loved the theatrical cut but apparently Mel Gibson thought the original was way too dark and had the director fired and reshot most of the end. So I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

It was the damn Jews' fault.

I found it had quite a disturbing effect on some (female) people ... the fact that

EVERYONE dies

to progress the narrative sorta detracts from the general happy-happy-joy-joy feeling the film aspires to ... ;)

You can keep your Good Morning Vietnams and Patch Adams and stuff them in a forgotten drawer somewhere for all I give a ****. What Dreams May Come, to me, is Robin Williams defining moment as an actor. Aside from Death To Smoochy, of course.

Watched Sunshine last night.

I didn't mind the pedestrian pace of the plot, but I did mind that, when the film takes on its final form, Danny Boyle thought it clever to use optical obfuscation to further the film's tense mood, which had the opposite effect on me.

Also, I'm getting bored of (science illiterate) writers equating SF with magic reasons why characters / the universe act in prescribed (and very silly) ways. At many points through the film I could have given the actors several different solutions to the current "only one way" dilemma.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

I watched Conan the Barbarian the other night. Horribly good.

is a superior work of art, but unfortunately ignored.

UHF is still one of the greatest comedies ever.

The Lake House. If you're in the mood for the romance drama, it's not terrible.

It had one of the fella's from Nip/Tuck in it in a small role, too.

Almost Famous. Pretty damn good, and a great cast.

Watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind for only about the second time since it came out. Actually it stands up pretty well: one can't help but compare the "sinister shadowy government men in orange coveralls" and the equally quaint and antiquated home appliances props in the houses ..! (As if the US would allow some French guy to run around telling them what to do, and as if it would all be under the control of a Colonel ..!)

Then again, isn't that the beauty of a conspiracy?

Oh, I know Mr Truffaunt is above reproach ... but since the whole "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" comment kicked off the cultural cold war with the continental ("Old") Europeans, it would need to be an American ... say a Governor or an Austrian ex-pat ... :)"

I finally saw Aliens vs. Predator. It was absolutely senseless and moronic - but since it made me laugh out loud several times, I can't say it's the worst film ever.

And hey, I almost felt bad for the poor wibble Predator at the end ...

I borrowed The Illusionist from a friend and watched it this weekend. Very, very enjoyable. But then again, Edward Norton is always fun to watch. Giamatti and Jessica Biel were good too.
