apparently some men are trying to get out of Ukraine on Slovakian border but are turned around and send back to Ukraine.

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

Okay I must be honest I have never seen such damage done so quickly to an economy  as this and its only going to get worse for Russia

I wish it wasnt about life and death because its interesting to see how being banned from systems like SWIFT immediately impact any economy. And  the West and its allies are not even targeting all Russian banks and companies with sanctions that could be worse. The Moscow exchange shutdown today, wait till they reopen to see further mass selling of shares  into this economic maelstrom created by Putins War

Putin needs to end this madness and immediately pull the Russian army out of Ukraine

Yes, they get drafted into the local defense forces.

Yeah, that's what scares me. He ain't going down that easily. Let's hope he doesn't start throwing nukes around like a little baby.

Or just these, but hopefully not.

Got a barrage (no pun intended) of press about these scary weapons over the weekend.  Strange given how old an idea these weapons are and they've been used before.

Russia has succeeded to persuade Finns that we need to join to Nato, as support for Nato membership has increased from ~25% to 53% and opposition has decreased to 28%. Also all parties in parliament have now given statements in support of joining to Nato. So now it would be possible that Finland joins to Nato soonish.

Yup, this is my fear too. He is the kind of person who will simply destroy everything around him rather than ever admit he may have been wrong about something.

Yes the economic damage is beginning to pile up, but as long as his oil and gas sectors remain largely untouched by sanctions he's going to be okay, given some 50% of Russia's income is from those sectors. And technically, with oil now at over $100/barrel, we are funding Russia and its war.

Well if they are serious, (1) they should NOT be public about it and submit their request in secret, and (2) their bid should be approved in a hyper-expedited manner.

Man, talk about shooting yourself in the foot. I'd be anything but Putin right now. He is probably locked in his office right now, crying, drinking vodka and listening to Radiohead.

Congratulations and well done to the Finnish people for making this prudent change of perspective

The sooner the better. Its been mentioned before but  one of the real consequence to Putins War is to unite the EU even more and to get more countries to want to  join NATO

@PidescoNow we just need Sweden to want to join NATO and the EU will really be a happy family

Saw this and was somewhat entertained:

Volodymyr Zelensky is a strange cat. He started off by getting a law degree (insert your own lawyer joke here), which he then proceeded to use as toilet paper, I guess. Never practiced a day in his life, deciding to strike out for the exciting vistas of Ukrainian Hollywood instead.
(I tried to come with a portmanteau but Uklywood doesn't really slide off the tongue).

He did stand-up (improv) comedy for a while, as part of a troupe, but eventually started scoring movie roles and moving up in the world. His big break came in 2015, when he got cast in a TV show "Servant of the People."  It was sort of an updated pastiche of "Mr. Smith Goes To Kyiv" - an unlikely everyman goes viral while passionately declaiming about the governmental corruption and suddenly finds himself winning the Presidency.

Since Ukrainians, like the rest of our terrible species, have real trouble differentiating between movies and reality, Zelensky (not being an idiot and understanding that simple fact) decided to run for President in real life.

Naturally he won. I mean, it was basically as if Martin Sheen had decided to run at the height of the West Wing's popularity. We are not really a very serious people, humans are.

Somewhat predictably, Zelensky (despite his vast experience of pretending to be a politician on the silver screen) turned out to be a pretty crappy President in real life. Great on camera and interviews and whatnot, but by 2022 his approval rating were hitting low 30s. He didn't react to the drop in his popularity super well - pulling some rather shady stuff in his attempts to head off his political rivals.
Zelensky is very much the product of his environment. And Ukraine is what we are diplomatically calling a 'developing country' these days. Which means that they are trying very hard to be better than they currently are. Centuries of Russian Imperial colonialism, and 75 years of the Soviet habits, are not an easy legacy to shake off.
But they are trying and they have come remarkably far in a very short time - since 2014.

Then Putin started massing troops and... it really was like a damn movie. Eastern Europe is where meta goes to meta. Don't know what to tell you.
The guy stepped up. When it mattered, and absolutely everything was on the line, he rose to the moment. For the last couple of months he's been positively Churchillian.
That's all the more impressive, considering the fact that - as a part of their top secret war plan (that was somehow swiped by the CIA/MI6 in its entirety) - Russia has dedicated substantial resources to the decapitation of Ukrainian government. That's the antiseptic military-speak for "we are going to send murder squads of our special forces after you and also try to hit you with a rocket if opportunity arises."

There are also rumors going around that his family was being targeted as well.
Zelensky is ignoring all of that, staying in the capital even as it is being stormed - apart from the occasional trip to the frontlines.
I believe the technical poli-sci term for this sort of thing is  "metal as f**k."

Like a lot of things about this crisis Putin's hatred's of Zelensky has a pretty strong personal component. I would imagine the reverse is also true since the Kremlin's justification for the war is (currently) to liberate Ukraine from the neo-Nazi junta ruling it. By 'Neo-Nazi junta' Putin means the democratically elected *Jewish* President who had lost four of his great-uncles in the Holocaust.
Klassy, like you read about.

Like I said - an interesting guy. Almost a microcosm of Ukraine as a whole: clearly flawed, probably corrupt, sometimes petty - but in the end willing to stand up when his name was called, and ultimately just wanting the opportunity to build a normal life for himself and his country.
The US and the French keep trying to convince him to to let them fly him out of the country, to set up a government in exile. He doesn't appear to be terribly interested, as of now. In fact, his direct quote was apparently: "The fight is here. I need ammo, not a ride."

Another serious economic blow to Putin is by putting sanctions on the Russian central bank you directly impact their ability to access their $650 billion foreign reserve war chest which is in dollars and the central bank cant trade in dollars....this type of sanction is very clever

Interesting to see if this will be consistent going forward.
