Problem launching via Steam.
Ilysail posted a question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Two weeks ago i started having problems launching a few of my games in my Steam library, Pillars of Eternity being one of them. Essentially the problem is that i hit the play button and either nothing happens or every now and then i see the game title turn blue and i can see its syncing data, but still nothing launches. I have been able to play the game by going into the local files and clicking on the .exe file directly, though this disables achievements. I know this is almost entirely a steam problem, and seems to revolve around the in game overlay. I can launch the game via steam if i delete the overlay.dll files in the steam directory, but again this disables in game achievements. The reason I'm posting this is because i really haven't been able to find any information on how to fix this, and steam support has really been no help on the matter. Has anyone else experienced this sort of issue and possibly knows a way to fix it? I love the game, and although its probably silly to worry about earning achievements, it does sort of bug me while i'm playing that i'm not earning credit towards any of them. -
When this game came out it was unplayable for me. Obsidian did nothing to address the issues I reported so I was unable to play. I've waited until V2 to try again but all the same issues are there. - Saves are immediately corrupted on game exit causing save load to loop back to menu - Clicking "Conintue" in the menu loads the encampment from the beginning of the game then pauses and will not unpause - Game locks up the majority of times on launch and must be killed and relaunched. (I have windows hang reports but this also happens on Linux) - Save states can be "fixed" by deleting the tempsavedata on both windows and linux every time you launch the game - On Linux the cursor starts on the bottom left of maps regaurdless of where the characters are - Game performance is absoluately terrible when running since V2...it was terrible at launch and it's worse now - Steam Sync does not work I've submitted bug reports, tickets, Obsidian has ignored all these issues. I have tickets that still have never been addressed since the second day of the games release! The only effort Obsidian has made was on these forms where a dev "fixed" my saves. I was then trolled about how I was thankless about this "help" meanwhile everyone ignored the reality the game just immediaetly corrupted the saves the dev fixed. Fixing saves does not address the problem of how they are becoming corrupted! Fast forward to now and I've tried all my old tricks and new. The game is a fresh install since v2, I deleted it months ago after it was obvious Obsidian gave 0 ****s about dealing with issues. I nuked the registry entries, wiped all old directories in hopes of removing any and all traces of the old bugged out v1.X version of the game or its files. None of this has helped on Windows or Linux. The game is still a worthless mess and obviously I'd like to PLAY the damn thing. I didn't back this project so I could spend my days trolling the forms about Obsidians **** support, I just want to play the god damn thing!

Problem with Steam
patdiehl posted a question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I purchased Pillars of Eternity from Obsidian and very much enjoyed the game. I am having problems with Steam though and I was wondering if you could help me. I cannot connect my steam tab on my laptop to the internet so I can download new games. I purchased Baldur's Gate from Steam and cannot get to it. In the process of troubleshooting, I uninstalled Steam which uninstalled Pillars of Eternity. Can you please help me to get it back? Thankyou very much, Pat Diehl -
So, rather than restarting the game for the nth time (which would probably lead to me dropping the game entirely--my brain's gone numb from sheer repetition of the first 3 quests of Gilded Vale--when I usually discover mistakes in character development), I'm considering re-speccing my char using IE Mod. Does anyone have info whether the mod will affect my possibility of getting achievements or, worse, some sort of VAC penalty?

Can't install from media
stewdanko posted a question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I am trying to install Pillars of Eternity from the CD I purchased specifically from the UK. I have limited bandwidth and don't want to spend days downloading the game. I tried this and followed it to the letter, but it went into downloading mode anyway It was my impression that Steam is supposed to do the DRM for their games and not become a major stumbling block to game play. I tried getting Technical Support from Steam, but they just send me to this forum.- 6 replies

Just bought the physical copy of the game and am trying to install the main content (sans patches, obviously) from the disk. The installer doesn't appear to be installing anything from the disk despite apparently holding 6.8GIG of data. Steam is trying to download 5.7GIG of data instead, which I am trying to avoid (otherwise I would have bought on GoG). Surely there hasn't been 5.7GIG of patches for Pillars since release? Searched the net for solutions, no luck. After running Setup.exe on the CD the game registers fine. It allocates the space but as soon as it gets to the "installing from disk" screen it immediately skips to the "Your selected games are now accessible in the Steam Games Library" screen without seeming to copy anything. That's when the 5.7GIG download starts. Any pointers/workarounds would be appreciated.

I started my first playthrough on my home computer on hard with expert mode enabled, and have been actually enjoying most of the restrictions (no helpful tips, aoe markers, can't open stash, etc.) Last weekend I traveled out of town, and decided to play on my laptop. As soon as I loaded my last save I noticed something was wrong, and finally I realized that expert mode was off. I was able to check/uncheck the various settings, like locking the stash, and I started seeing all the tutorial popups. When I returned home and played on my gaming machine, the expert mode setting was back in place. One other oddity I noticed was that my own save games showed up under my wife's account when she started playing. She and I share the laptop, so I assume that somehow my cloud saves got mixed with hers.

Hi, I dowloaded Pillars of Eternity from steam yesterday, but got an instant crush (within 0.3 seconds) when I try to start it up. Here's what I have tried and not work: 1. restart windows, steam. 2. run exe file directly, run as administrator, use 256 color 3. no log file can be found under the game folder. 4. switch between graphic cards( AMD Radeon HD 7450M, Intel® HD Graphics 4000 ) 5. change non-unicode language into English, since I'm not using an English Windows system. 6. check google for similar problem and solution. My computer environment: Game Version: 1.0.4.540 OS: Windows 8 x64 Graphic Cards: AMD Radeon HD 7450M, Intel® HD Graphics 4000 Log file: can't find it under the game folder. Really want to play this game, anyone help?

I've noticed, that the game does not start if the frame counter is enabled in Steam. I only get a black screen with the gauntlet courser. The frame counter itself works, since I can enable it via the Steam overlay, once I am in the game, but I have to disable it again in order to start the game. OS X 10.10.2 MacBook Pro 9.1 (15-inch, Mid 2012), Intel Core i7 2,3GHz, 8GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M Game version 1.03 Steam Build Apr 2 2015, API: v017, Package version 1428012781

Using the Steam 64-bit client. Cross-posted from the Steam forum. Due to Ubuntu becoming as stable as a unbalanced house of cards on this hardware with the proprietary AMD drivers, I have to run the open souce Radeon drivers (have an HD 6670 2GB). The problem is, the game doesn't even start. Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 motherboard. 8GB RAM. Steam achievement bugs
ravetrade posted a question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
So I have 2, possibly 3, achievements bugged on Steam. And before you say console commands, it's not that. I never used "iroll20s," and I got achievements all the way up to finishing the game. The first is the "All Upgrades in Stronghold" achievement. I currently do have them all built, but at one point, I "auto-resolved" a bandit attack which led to one of my upgrades getting destroyed. Maybe the bug has to do with this? *SPOILERS FOR DRAGONS* The second is "Kill All the Dragons." I have killed the Sky Dragon, the Adra Dragon, Cail the Silent (the dragon in the cave in Searing Falls), Drakes, Young Drakes, and the Shadow Drakes. All but Cail show up in my bestiary, but named creatures don't go in the bestiary anyways. I've heard that only the Sky, Adra and Cail count for the achievement, so I should have it. The only thing I can think of was when I went back to the Adra Dragon after betraying it to the Dragon Hunter, it wasn't hostile and talking to it just said something about it being weakened. I had to force attack to kill it. Still got the bestiary entry and the end slide about it's death, though. The final achievement is "Explorer." I've gone into every building and every map I can think of. According to the Prima Digital Guide, I've gone thorugh every side quest (except the Doemenel and the Dozen quests, since I chose the Crucible Knights), but I don't think they have extra maps that are only accessible for their routes. The patch notes did say that the achievement now checks for 152 areas instead of 160 so I feel like I should be even more likely to have "Explorer." Maybe we could have a statistic for how many areas we've seen on the party records? That could help with pinpointing whether you've got a bug or just haven't explored enough yet. I tried uploading my game save for reference, but I keep getting a "No file was selected for upload" error. Oh well. I know these achievements have already been called out by people as bugged, but I thought I'd add my experience onto the pile and hopefully help get them fixed. If anyone has some tips, let me know!- 6 replies

The game crashed directly after fighting the bandits in Valewood, and exited with a message about creating a dump folder, I've added dxdiag and the autosave when entering the woods (nearest one I had). (Added zip file to dropbox because the forum attach doesn't work for me.) https://www.dropbox.com/s/ef0qlhfak9kha8m/2015-04-01_210428.zip?dl=0

Description & Steps to Reproduce the Issue: The Steam Overlay will not open if the PillarsOfEternity.exe is Run as administrator. This is true whether the "run as admin" function is set in the exe's Properties or if "run as admin" is selected by right clicking on the exe. The problem persists whether at the main menu or in-game. When admin is set via properties and the game is run via steam v1.0.2.0508 -steam is displayed in the lower left-hand corner. Running the exe directly (by double clicking) only v1.0.2.0508 is displayed. When admid is set by right clicking on the exe only v1.0.2.0508 is displayed. In all three cases the overlay will not work. What I tried to do to fix it - TL-DR: I failed: [After a bit of browsing I thought I'd try the method below to get both working simultaneously. I thought I had it working but upon validating the process in task manager (here's a how to) I could see that PoE was in fact NOT running as administrator:] Find Pillars of Eternity via Steam (the program, not the installation location), right click and select Properties A window will open on the GENERAL tab (make sure you have the Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game option checked) Select the SET LAUNCH OPTIONS... button and in the Launch Options window that appears type in -forceservice and select the OK button. If you have any other commands in here make sure to leave a space between them (found this command here.) Close the Pillars of Eternity - Properties window and launch the game through Steam. The lower left-hand corner of the screen will now read: v1.0.2.0508 -steam -forceservice Now you're running as admin and get to keep the Steam overlay to boot! Enjoy! After four hours of research I'm done. Sadness, I have newb'd. Sadness lives in my soul. Info for devs: As this is not a crash I didn't include any savegame files, output logs or screenshots. Let me know if there is any more info that'd help you. I have included my system specs via dxdiag (as well as the 64-bit dxdiag) and just in case you need it here is my Steam version info: Built Mar 23 2015, at 20:07:51 Steam API: v017 Steam package versions: 1427176184 System Spec links: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5-ClpK5zHyfMzR6MndJc3hvNmc&authuser=0 https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5-ClpK5zHyfZlYyQjZVUEJSYmM&authuser=0 (64-bit version) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh by the way, I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank the entire team at Obsidian for this amazing game. I've barely scratched the surface and I love it already. I've never played any of the old CRPGs but I backed anyway. The fact that you guys have a splash screen thank you for your backers every time the game starts off is pure awesome. Thank you for that! I know there are mainstream haters out there looking for any excuse to write this game off because it doesn't fit in their "clique" of what "gaming should be" - to hell with 'em. Gamers know what this game is worth and stuffed coffers speak loudest. I'm so proud that PoE is getting the limelight it deserves.

Hi, Started playing Pillars of Eternity this week-end, and I'm very impressed so far, or I would be if I could play without crashing. I indeed regularly encounter a full "crash to black screen" at any random moments of the game. So far it happened to me before even starting the game during the character creation period, and several times during the first 3 or 4 zones of the game. It can happen during combat, during simple movement/exploration, etc. When the crash happens, the game starts by freezing for a second or two, then it goes fully black for a few seconds, and only then I go to the error message "Pillars of Eternity has stopped working". One information that might be helpful, is that I encountered the exact same crash on Wasteland 2 (characterized by having the same error message, same freezes, the same way my screen flickers, etc.). At the time I had spent weeks discussing over e-mail with inXile's support without them finding the cause of the issue. I then stopped playing W2 for a while, and tried again from time to time after they patched to see if it was working. Here is the link to my original thread on the same issue for Wasteland 2, which didn't get much answers unfortunately. As of now, this crash seems to have disappeared from Wasteland 2. This might be after their patch 4 or 5, but I'm not sure they have fixed it knowingly. I do not have any issue with other Unity-based games such as Shadowrun Returns though, and do not have this issue with any other games at the moment. My system specs: CPU: AMD FX 8350 8-core RAM: 12GB OS: Windows 7 64bits GPU: Radeon R9 290x, tested with both 15.2 and 15.3 drivers, both have the same issue Direct upload to the files kept failing, so DxDiag, Save file and Output log are all located on Dropbox here. Hope this can help get it fixed soon !

Steam Game doesn't work
TeoMazzu posted a question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Hi, I'm new in this forum and I'm sorry from now for my terrible english. Yesterday (29/03) I downloaded the game in the morning and I played it for the first time for 1 hour in the afternoon. Everything works, I was super-huber-happy and at the end I saved the game. Today (30/03) I turned on my pc, I lunched steam application after a "steam search for the updates", I lunched the game. Unfortunately after the sponsors, the program freez at the "kickstarter thanks". Few second after, windows ask me to stop the program and I return on the Desktop. What happens?!?! Someone has the same problem? Thanks for help! -
Description: Crash of Pillars of Eternity at start-up via Steam. Steps to Reproduce the Issue: All the time. Running as Administrator makes no difference except the user question. Closed steam in task manager details en restarted and still the same problem. Restarted the PC and still have te same problem. Used te UNCL Fonts removing but the command prompt doesn't seem to do anything / there is no UNCL Font to delete. Important Files: I don't have permission to upload a file yet or the basic uploader fails. But I have a Output log and DXdiag. Kind Regards Mackmora

Hi, I unlocked my backer code for a Royal Edition. Game is ok but the DLC page on Steam is empty. Something I can do about it? See screenshot http://i.imgur.com/0FKF78x.jpg?1 PS: there is no search feature in this forum? Also, uploading the screenshot here failed 3 times. -
Sorry if this is a total noob question, but its been a long time since I played a modern PC game (still playing IWD / NWN). I have never used Steam, and just recently learned about GoG. So my quesitons are: Where is the best place to get PoE? What is the best "edition" of PoE to get? And can you get PoE at a retail store in Canada (and thus get a physical copy)? I would like to get a strategy guide for the game. Thanks, N.
