You are forgetting the particular scenario of WW2. The US didn't just say "Oh screw it, lets just kill all the people so there's noone left to fight!", they were dealing with a real issue or propaganda. The Japanese government was telling the population that they were winning, that they needed a few more people to keep the war effort going, and that no-one should ever surrender, lest they be treated worse than they could possibly imagine (torture, etc). Remember Iwo Jima ? There was a real and significant loss of allied life to weigh against the dispicable lack of respect for (Allied and Japanese) human life by the Japanese Emperor. You would have a better argument against the bombings of German cities in 1945 ...
