Josh Sawyer GDC Next 10 Talk
Messier-31 replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
If we're bad designers, sure. Touché. But you can't predict all player reactions. Luckily "take care of someone" is quite straightforward, but maybe the more complex quest objective could be intentionally ambiguous? -

I say it's not text to read because of verbose banalities, but because of descriptions. These descriptions, like "your interlocutor shrugs and looks away from you" are there thanks to the fact that you cannot see that kind of expression in an isometric game. I like it, it brings back memories of pen-and-paper roleplays. -

<jabber> One more thing I don't like about cRPG's is a combat scenario proudly adopted in Icewind Dale 2: So there you are, just strollin' through the dungeon, minding your own beeswax, when suddenly foes appear out of nowhere around you. It's a trap, I get it, but they pop-up just like that - no teleportation animation, no coming out of the shadows, no nothing. But you're surrounded in a fraction of a second. It's lame to suddenly give you like 10 monsters out of the blue. Now you are all like "OK dungeon, you wanna play it rough?" and kick the out-of-nowhere enemies back into oblivion, when all of a sudden 20 more of them comes from the north, and there's 30 more on their way from the south, or east or west, whataver. So you waste a quarter of an hour to defeat swarms of foes, heal/rest, and proceed to the next room where BAM! the same scenario all over again. Frustrating, or what? I know IwD gameplay was similar to IwD-2, but I don't remember frowning so much back then. BG series was so much better. </jabber>

Suddenly there was Wurst mit brät Kartoffel bus riding some chicken backwards with colours. Nobody ever went into this canal extraordinary fudge bishop. So it was dry as a wet hamster chillin' out on a frying pan on a wednesday afternoon beach party held hostage by some sharks. - Forsooth! - asked the badger and it was rain.

Brain, 2013-11-04, 9:55 AM Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering? Pinky, 2013-11-04, 9:56 AM Sure, Brain... but how we're gonna get all this jelly? Brain, 2013-11-04, 9:57 AM No, not that, Pinky! I've been browsing through the Project Eternity forums lately and... Pinky, 2013-11-04, 9:57 AM Egads, Brain! You are registered there too? Brain, 2013-11-04, 9:58 AM Surely, I... wait, what do you mean by "too"? What business could you possibly have with Obsidian? Pinky, 2013-11-04, 9:59 AM Haha, "WorldMaster" it is you isn't it? Adding to friends now; a couple more and we will have a virtual tea party, NARF! Brain, 2013-11-04, 10:05 AM "Not-a-mouse-at-all"... I should have known. Now it is irrelevant; the important thing is that although the game itself will have a number of made up words from artificial languages - constructed soleley for the game itself - some people there questioned the use of latin based words. I have found a proof of such a use. The irrocian calendar, the commonly-used calendar in and around the Dyrwood. See, they write years down as AI - Anni Iroccio, the Year of Irrocio. And "anni" is a word from latin, it means "year". Thus the game will have some latin in it, or at least one artificial language based heavily on latin itself. Here's the link: http://eternity.gamepedia.com/Anni_Iroccio Pinky, 2013-11-04, 10:07 AM Naaaaaaaaarf... gee-whiz, you're so clever, Brain! But does it mean we have to learn latin now? POINT! ZORT! Brain, 2013-11-04, 10:08 AM No, it means that we're going to TAKE OVER THE WORLD... of Eternity.

Dwarven beards in PE
Messier-31 replied to IrienUK's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Pale elves, or Glamfellen in their own language[1], are an ethnicity of elves. Glamfellen are borderline albinos, slightly taller than wood elves, and the males can (and often do) grow facial hair. Source: http://eternity.gamepedia.com/Pale_elf -
I concur. Last thing I want is a game with a bundle of strange words like, oh I dunno... Wrath of the Kul'fon I mean, how dumb is that? Mmm, yeah... like "Baldur's Gate" or "icewind Dale". We wouldn't want that. I know I'm not adding anything new to the conversation (just quoting), but Tamerlane's reply is my personal favourite and most accurate - thank you, Tamerlane

World Map Travel
Messier-31 replied to Shadowless's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Elementary, my dear Watson: 1. We BELIEVE it was said, that world map travel will be in BG style. Evidence? How does one prove his beliefs? I am not a religious person, but others have the same opinion: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/64566-world-map-travel/?do=findComment&comment=1384565 http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/64566-world-map-travel/?do=findComment&comment=1384568 http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/64566-world-map-travel/?do=findComment&comment=1384575 2. In case you haven't noticed, games tend to have inaccesible locations for various reasons. Evidence everywhere. 3. Last but not least. My assumptions are just that - assumptions, presumptions, suppositions, blind guess if you will. I didn't put that word at the end of my post for no reason. -

World Map Travel
Messier-31 replied to Shadowless's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
IMHO in case of Eternity map travel would be better as it is planned - BG style. In Fallout (through 1-2-Tactics) you had lots of wasteland all over the place, and wandering was easy. In a world of Eternity, however, there are more things making some places inaccessable. Some places maybe will be known to you only after you make progress in the story, so there is no way to bump on a location by accident, as it was possible in Fallout. So these are my assumptions.
