What other reason there can be except to help immerse players, to give a little more verisimilitude to the world. The mental arithmetic that will be required otherwise when visiting a merchant is not something I would consider an entertaining activity. -

Dunno. Maybe for the same reason why Native Americans don't really have beards but black/white etc. people do. Native Americans don't have beards?

What PrimeJunta said is mostly true, your crashes were most likely a result of the 2 GB per process limitation on Windows 7 32 bit. From what others have posted, the game does use more than that on occasions. It's possible to increase that limit to 3 GB by using this command in the cmd "bcdedit /set increaseuserva 3072", that's how I play RAM tasking CK2 mods, as my laptop's CPU is 32bit.

Elves can't successffully breed with humans and vice versa, their union does not produce offspring it seems. Thus they are two seperate species rather than races of a species. Of course Humans and Elves do have their own races within their species, can't remember the names right now, it'll be on the Wiki I assume. The game uses the terms "race" and "sub-race". Yes, biologically speaking those should really be "species" and "ethnicity" (or more accurately "population"), but hey. Legacy fantasy RPG terminology doesn't do science. What does ethnicity has with biology, and how would it be a better therm than "sub-race" which in game refers to physical appearance? Edit: And to actually answer OP's question, there is a difference in height, elves are shorter and also have slightly larger pointy ears.

Haha, I admit, its crappy looking. I just want the portaits higher so I can see things easier without looking up and down so much. The arrangement it's not bad for a handheld device, but for PC portraits split between two opposite sides is really bad for anyone not suffering from strabismus (bad joke), and also it introduces to much movement for a mouse only player.
