I'm really looking forward to an update on character interaction and dialogue. I'd like to see how much of an impact your race, class, attributes, traits &c can have on your options in encounters and conversation. It would be awesome if they put a couple of sections of dialogue in the update as well so we could get a taste for the writing style.

private backer forum's?
Few replied to AcedBlade's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm pretty sure that this is what everyone here wants. People posting ideas here aren't trying to design the game for obsidian, they are just excited and want to share their ideas of what may be fun with all the other eager and excited backers. -
Intelligent Weapons
Few replied to TRX850's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I quite like some aspects of this idea. Im not so sure about having the weapon act out the part of a party member as it were and have reams and reams of sentient being like dialog. However maybe having the weapon communicate in a more poetic style might be fun. Perhaps there is a sword you may happen to find at the bottom of a pool in a fey patch of forest, when you hold this sword it feels as though it is vibrating slightly in your hands and if you hold it to your ear you can hear faint verse coming from the sword itself. Maybe it recites a singular history of how it was involved in a highly emotionally charged sequence of events. Maybe this tale leads you on somewhere were you can put an end to its tale and the blade itself. Something like that as "an intelligent weapon" may be nice.- 44 replies

I also really hope that other characters can act the party mouth piece if you so wish it; so as the most appropriate person can do the speaking. For example if you have a wizard in your party, whilst your own character may well be the best class (chanter or cipher) , and you need to deal with some sort of wizardish organisation, then your own wizard should be able to converse with them on a much better level as they would have a greater mutual understanding &c. Also I do hope buff times get frozen during cutscenes. You will probably understand why if you played The Witcher 2 (and were also not so great at the combat). :D

Character Expression
Few replied to Osvir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I would say it does not come close to adding anything, more so taking something away. If a character has a complex response to an event or acts in a singular manner, this would then cause their portrait to change. The portrait changes, due to time constraints and so on, will be either generic happy, sad, angry &c. Surely this then results in taking the individualism out of such encounters and clearly bracketing them, rather than letting the player use their imagination. Also I find things such as this a little tacky, so I hope they wont be included; However it won't be the end of the world if they are. :D- 85 replies

I was just giving some standard examples of pacifist solutions to problems that I'm sure could be changed lore wise to fit the game with the mechanics effectively remaining the same as in the examples I mentioned. Then again I'm not a game designer so I've no doubt that the methods that I would try to implement would end up being terrible. I just really really really really hope that there will be ways to get around the majority of the content without killing things; failing things in general then at least encounters with sentient beings. Oh and a "tie them up" option sounds awesome

hehe, united we are strong! But if you are facing evil minions, such as adorable little kobolds, surely you could at least use magics to put them to sleep or banish them back to their true plane of existence or even use some methods of knocking them unconscious. :D

Yes this is absolutely how I feel and wrote about it a little in a few threads some time ago. It seems as though most people thought that this idea is not even worth taking the time to consider and unfortunately in an interview with one of the developers they state that there will be no way to play the game as a pacifist. I myself was hoping, probably a bit too much, that they might invest some time in creating abilities etc that can result in non lethal methods and I am slightly disappointed. I never really expected them to implement the ability to do a full non violent play-through but I was still hoping and I still am I think. Regardless though I still think this will be an awesome game

Almost certainly a Chanter or a Cipher. Whichever class has the most potential ability to manipulate characters without violence. At the moment I suppose this looks to be the cipher but I like the idea of the chanter as well and from the information given it does seem reasonable to hope that they will be able to perform the actions I would like. The chanter does sound cooler though

I will definitely not be loading after a characters death. I wouldn't be averse to my character becoming attached to a companion who, for whatever reason, dies and having my character ending up as tortured as heathcliff!

NO, NO and NO again to this awful disney fantasy! If there are examples of this trash in PE I will be very upset indeed!

Combat and/or story?
Few replied to Frisk's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
One does have to admit that spellcasting in P:T left something to be desired. I think that NWN1 & 2 handled it somewhat better as there was less of a tendency to get caught in one's own AoE. I think my unreasonable heat of the moment rant response was more focused on his comment of "this is my rant on story and how it can not make a good game". I just feel strongly the other way Im sure what he meant to say was "Combat can not make a good game" -

May I recommend Call of Duty to you. You sound like their target demographic. -
It would be very nice to see a feature like this as a lot of people above have said. Having a trait such as "limp" for example whereby your character can not run and maybe has an animation when walking would be nice to see. No advantage because of it, you just cant run or move slower. You could have an option to choose background and then on top of that maybe 3 to 5 character traits. It would be a nice nod to those who want to role play a character and you would not have to select such a trait at all if you were not interested.

I demand no tutorial.
Few replied to anubite's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As someone else put it you could have each race start in a different area, with maybe some slight variation for backgrounds if it isn't too complicated. Then have a nice evenly paced introduction to the mechanics of the game without necessarily having a pop up telling you what, where and when to click. Im sure a system could be implemented where if a certain task is not fulfilled after x minutes in the "starting zone" then maybe the button and subsequent buttons in the sequence were highlighted as a hint. If it is reasonably thought out then the starting area need not be a sequence of generic cringeworthy tasks such as kill some rats in a cellar to demonstrate combat mechanics. If it is done well enough then there could effectively be a tutorial that takes up the first 30 mins or so of the game if you zoom through everything. It could even be the prologue, what you do in this area and the choices you make could start to shape who your character is etc etc. This way the "tutorial" area could feel like an integral part of the game and not a chore. If done well enough the player may feel as though there is no tutorial in the game at all. -
Yep all posts read, but when your original post features a picture of a samurai elephant and you say it would be cool, well I felt like I needed to respond to that viewpoint and idea, not your ideas in other posts. Nothing personal.
-
Adding races such as "samurai elephants" would just be a terrible idea. Im sorry but it really would. Any fantasy universe with elves and dwarves etc is based on european folklore and mythology and that is why it feels familiar and "realistic". Putting extra crazy races into such a universe starts to make things feel cartoony and demeans the lore.

Im not sure if your option of southern deciduous forests covers my favourite environment, which is deciduous woods and rolling fields (like England :D). In fact it looks like the countryside in the first screen shot for PE is this sort of flavour; They just need more oak trees. Maybe this is what you meant but the southern in the title makes me unsure. Ill just vote for that one anyway. Also I hate jungles, rocky barren, deserts and snowy mountains. oh and tropic islands.

Obsidian's front page survey
Few replied to Frisk's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Im not going to argue here, all these modern CoD games are trash that should never have come into existence BUT the original CoD and its expansion pack United Offensive were very very good games. They had an awesome cinematic single player which was something new at the time and a strong online community. if anyone here played it, remember the Lord of the Rings maps someone made. -
Awesome Interview with Avellone

well full pacifist is impossible. you have to consider that there will be mindless creatures like wild animals that you cant convince to back away without a fight and if you find yourself in the middle of a battle between 2 factions and you support one of them, the other will just attack you Well there was charm beast in arcanum for wild animals. I know it was never likely to be an option but it would be possible to do if the developers wanted to. Just because a fight is going on between 2 factions doesn't mean you have to wade in and get involved, maybe you just run away, or calmly walk away. Then you deal with the consequences later. Obviously this would create a lot of branches as to what happens next and would take a long time to make I'm sure. -
There was an article on this subject on GameBanshee or RPS a while ago. A developer was saying that this would be something they would very much like to do and would be easy to code but voice overs made it difficult. It would be so so good to see this in the game. Say if you approach random NPC villagers with your weapon drawn they react accordingly (i.e. scared), if you are slogging around in heavy armour NPCs should maybe not readily approach you and back away from you when you drew near. Have different types of clothing modify their reaction (smoking jacket and the nice dress from arcanum style). If you are wearing costumes that look expensive then have the peasants treat you deferentially. If you are wandering around the countryside and you say only have a three person party and you are wearing cloaks or normal clothes then bandits will try and rob you but if you are a collection of tanks covered in plate armour then they just stay clear. Anything along those lines would make the game feel very deep and make you feel the world was really alive. Without voiceovers I'm sure this would be achievable but I suppose time constraints may rule it out.

Awesome Interview with Avellone
Few replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I dont think you need to worry too much, he does not say that romances are out of the question. He just gave a humorous answer describing how he feels about them and how being made to write them makes him feel. After all he says the previous ones he wrote in MotB worked due to the help of this Ziets fellow, who also happens to be working on this game. I also doubt that the decision to include romantic sub plots is his decision alone. Personally I dont really have a strong opinion one way or another but I don't think you "promancers" as people seem to be calling you need to worry too much about there not being any. You should be sad for me though as there is definitely no full pacifist option
