[Merged] Cooldown Thread
TrashMan replied to Ieo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Perhaps because they didn't expect psychotic outbursts or threats of revoking the pledges unless this feature gets changed. Why would you think revoking the pledge is psychotic? It's his money - if he thinks it's not the game he thoght it will be, then he's free to revoke it. Hell, I'll probably reduce my pledge too (still undecided). Without resting it's just not the same atmosphere. I dont' care if it's anacian or fatigue, but no resting? Part of the charm is simply gone.- 661 replies

I hope you are right. I think I'm pretty clsoe to the truth when I say that people who back this project up most enthusiasticly want that old IE magic back. They want the feel. If the mechanics change too much, that feel will not be there anymore.- 661 replies

Overreaction theater!
TrashMan replied to Madzookeeper's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
not particularly, no. it's more a comment on the overreactions that some people have had than anything else. we aren't going to get the worst possible outcome on something, just like we won't be getting the best possible outcome because neither one ever happens. acting like we're getting either one is just silly and it causes problems. that's really it. Hell, I'd be happy if it's just BG2-like with fancier graphics. as cyberarmy said: That thing usually hard to understand is, it's impossible to please everyone and if anyone try that they fail pretty hard. We all know it. It's impossible to please everyone. So each of us hopes we will be inside the group that will be pleased. Cest la vie' -
Gender Prejudice
TrashMan replied to DeDaL's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Wait...you telling me women are so senstive that even mentioning the word r-a-p-e causes them to fall into rage/depression/whatever? Are you serious? It - like murder - is a crime that is very real. Why should the developers avoid it like a plauge? IT's part of the world and human existence. What's next? Want to demand that all movies or book that feature rape be burned? That the word is forever erased from every disctionary on the planet? Dear Lord, talking about an overreaction. Maybe you want a fantasy world full of puppies and rainbows where bad things never happen.. and it's cool. I for one don't. Also, where do you get your statistics from? -

Gender Prejudice
TrashMan replied to DeDaL's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Actually, I personally feel that the "female characters have less strength" idea is not correct. True, on average, males are stronger than females. But it doesn't mean a female hero should be average . But that's just my opinion (and knowing some physically strong women and emotionally wise/intuitive men ). That's true, but it's also true that men have a higher ceeling. In other words a male hero should be strogner than a female hero, if both persue physical excellence. If you want to be completely realistic, you can forget the +1 Dex for females, as they aren't any more agile or dextrous. This is somewhat problematic, since, while women do have plenty of their own advantages (superior multi-tasking, wider pheriphery vision, better in reading emotions, etc. ), most of them are not suited for combat...which is what most of the game revolves around. Some female players might enjoy the extra challenge, but I don't think many would like feeling gimped. -

Gender Prejudice
TrashMan replied to DeDaL's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Might be interesting if done right. Historicly, women have been seen as more valubale than men and protected. They were hommeakers, the heart of the family and guardians/carrier of hte future generation - hence why dangerous professions such as war were mostly reserved for men. The prejudices have both pros and contras for both roles. Might be interesting. -
Overreaction theater!
TrashMan replied to Madzookeeper's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Ain't gonna happen. People dont' have a tendency to restrain thmselves. They need additional incentive. Usually a punitive measure. I've been on internet forums that are cvil and organized - mostly because the mods/admins had a 0 tolerrance policy for BS, but weren't total natzis either. While voicing displeasure might be premature - these little snippets of information is all we got - people rightfully fear the game will turn out to be different than promissed. We should trust the devs? Nicely said, but plenty of people trusted the devs and ended up with a big bag of nothing but dissapointment. I guess many feel it's better to err on the side of caution and voice despleasure of a certain feature, rather than risk that feature getting included and ruining the game for them. Let's face it - all of us want for Obsiadian to make a perfect game. And all of us would gladly campaign to get our vision of the perfect game trough. -

Level scaling confirmed
TrashMan replied to Valorian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Nope. No you don't. Only if your power scaling and mechanics in general are ill-thought. Heck, not even then. -
So...what's exactly so awesome about those concepts? Absolutely nothing. They are weird and "diffeent" but the novelty wears out in 5 minutes.

Level scaling confirmed
TrashMan replied to Valorian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Only if the pwoer curve is such that lowever-level parties stand no chance. If the power progresion is more..normal (or should I say more real) then such a problem doesnt' exist. At all. EVERY area is doable from lvl1 (altough some may be very, VERY hard) But noooo... we get suepr-duper level scales to feed someones ego and power fantasies. I keep getting dissapointed the more news gets released. I swear, if this keeps up I'm cutting my pledge in half. -
Proposed Inventory System
TrashMan replied to Hypevosa's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Why would it be needlesly complicated? Think of DA:O or Skyrim ordered list inventory. Except insted of just having Weight: 90/120 at the bottom fo the screen you also have Volume: 80/100 Weight would depend on strength but volume would be mostly fixed (could only be increased with bags orbackpacks) You just have 2 numbers to keep an eye on. Easy. I think this would be an issue only to pack rats. Who cares how much stuff eneemies drop if you can only carry a very fixed amount back. And if most of the stuff would be worthless anyway...like damaged armor(altough I guess you could sell it as scrap metal) -

Cooldowns are the work of the devil. Say no to them! Also, why should mage usly only spells, constantly and without end? What is so wrong with mages using staffs, swords, crossbows? Look at Gandalf - he rocks! Magic being a potent resource to use sparingly IS what made it so awesome in D&D.- 661 replies

Mass Effect didn't have good and evil, but Renegade and Paragon. And that wans't clearly good nad evil. Soem renegade choices were clearly more "good" or better than paragon ones. That said, I dont' want the choice system to be formulaic. If you do that it feels just as a fake as the good/evil one. I want chocies to be whatever it makes sense for them to be. Sometimes clear good and evil, sometimes not, sometimes a mix of everything.

Wrong - you need a case where it is enabled. Because if you can't heal, you can't use that tactic. If the trap immediately kill a cahracter, you can't send them in either (unless you can spam ressurection, whihc you generally can't) But... I could use that tactic. I'm not quite sure what you are telling me I'm wrong on. I did it all the time. All. The. Time. So it worked in 100% of my experiences. Do you have a reading disability? We're taking of how to make a system that works, and you keep repeating ad nausum how one of the old systems didn't work (for you). And mind you there were a few insta-kill traps in BG. I specificly remember one in spellhold. The walls turned anyone passing trough into chunky bits.
-
Really? You're saing my own character wouldn't know a first thing about skills he can use? A trained fighter wouldn't know what advantages/disadvantages learing a polearm would have over learning a sword? Don't be silly. A character who lives in a brutal world has every reason to try to become more efficient at what he does. So? You're out of combat. Who cares. You can re-buff. It's not hte same because you cannot rest everywhere and resting is dangerous and can get you killed. and for hte love of god, take off your blinders and try looking at it wider than BG. Stop just thinking how game X did it. Try thinking how to fix whatever you think is broken. Again - you can't rest everywhere. What now? Why NOT have a spell? And why should wizzard be able ot do anything (when specced properly)?

I had a thief in ToEE and it was very usefull. Playinga Pathfinder PnP session now and hte party thief is very usefull. Agian, it's not the concept that is the problem. It's the execution. A wizzard can harldy be as good at sneaking as a rouge wihout watign 2 slots (levitate to make no noise and invisibility to not be seen). He taks 2 slots to match something a thief can easily do wihotu wasting limited resources. And that's without going itno all the other things a thief can do. Can you make a mage that can do most the things a thief can do? Yes. But good luck in him being usefull in other ways. Getting trough traps by just sending people in and healing? only works in 2 cases: - you have instantanius healing. Just imaggine if healing was far slower and more difficult. Suddenly that approach doesn't look so hot - the trap isn't insta-kill And a collary to both, if you can rest anytime, anywhere.
-
If they go with cooldowns and/or a limited mage spell selection I will be really, REALLY dissapointed. @Shadenut - you cna actually balane it differently. Have rouges be more effective than a knock spell. Reuzire that a mage has at least the most basic lockping skill to use the spell. The WORST game design I can image is the one where classes have exclusive roles and other classes are forbidden from taking over. The point isn't that other classes are as good - the point is that other calsses should be able to do a passable job.

I fail to see the problem there. You seem to think that low-level characters should be wusses...and that mages should be too. A mage, regardless of level, should be a formidable opponent. Especially when there's 6 of them. Mages should be terrifying opponents. You know the problem with D&D? You low-level party is making camp when you are suddenly attacked by 3 lvl 1 wizards. *cue party laughing* Basicly this scenario here: http://spoonyexperim...eaping-wizards/ That should never happen. Also, against magic missiles there's thing like SHIELDS and resistances and stuff. It's not really that much different from simply starting the game at 10th level, and having a MUCH lower level progression curve. Not a problem actually. There have been gems without HP inflation and games without levels. And they had good gameplay and the player could feel like badass (take for instance Splinter Cell.. or Jagged Alliance 2). You don't necessarily have to look for inspiration among strict RPG's only you know...
