In melee, I'd think that Rangers are good at hit-and-run tactics. So maybe they favor reach weapons like the long spear, are good at disengaging from an attack, and can exploit terrain features to surprise and hinder a foe. That would help compensate for their lighter armor. (I never quite saw the logic of their being dual-wield specialists.)

Good update, thank you. I'd like to read more about the druid and chanter classes, but any of the three pairs would do nicely.

Update #70: New Year Project Update
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
For me, the motivation for anteing up more money would be: does the added content significantly increase and further improve the gaming experience? (This includes replay value.) If they added, say, +20% more play time and increased the number of interesting character combinations, then I wouldn't have much hesitation to increase my contribution by 15-25%. That's a drop in the bucket for a game I really want to play. I might be more hesitant if they came back asking for the same amount as the original game funding. My $.02 worth.- 491 replies

They would probably be Austral Dwarves then, which doesn't sound quite as cool... so to speak.- 38 replies

Try opening your perspective a little. You wouldn't need to specialize in creating Infinity Engine maps; you might just need to be focused on digital graphical design, but without necessarily requiring skills such as creature skinning and rigging. Relax. Obsidian has the business experience to know what skills they need and who can supply it. That's part of the reason they got the support they did.- 491 replies

Outsourcing is usually a business decision to select a specialized vendor who can do a particular task more cost effectively. It can save a company money to do so, but there can be other factors that need to be considered.- 491 replies

To implement that, they could just do an FoW mesh array of single bytes listing percent revealed at each vertex across an area, then interpolate in between the vertices. I guess it wouldn't be that expensive in terms of save overhead after all.
-
I had this notion for a "fade in" FoW. Since the stealth mechanic uses outer and inner detection radii, the area inside the inner circle could be fully shown, while the area between the inner and outer radii can be gradually faded into view. (To make it smooth, the fade in rate increases with decreasing radii.) If you just stand there, then the outer ring will gradually appear, allowing you to look ahead. This would increase the game save overhead, but I think it adds a little drama.

Update #70: New Year Project Update

Many of them which are on this forum. All of them should be even, since they require an OE-account for the backer portal. As for 'objecting being a minority' actually amongst the ones who responded in reply to J.E. Sawyer the majority wasn't positive about the idea, very few came out positive for it. Now this might trigger a 'still minority of backers to vote negative' reply, but it remains of the backers replying the majority is against it. Would it be too far-fedged that this would be the same share of proportians amongst all backers? It very well could be... Statisticians are wary of such assumptions; for reliable results it's good to avoid personal biases and use independent checks. Those who are the most vocal tend to be those who have the most to gain by swaying the majority to a different opinion. That doesn't make them representative of the majority--just noisy. Personally I was in favor of the weapon wear option, so I remain unconvinced that the right outcome was achieved. But so be it.- 491 replies

Wrong. The group that raised the money is the majority of the investors. You do not represent that group; you represent yourself. The number of posters raising objections to a specific topic in this thread are a minority. If the developers wanted to sample a majority of the investors, they would do random polling.- 491 replies

To prevent them from implenting ideas the general focusgroup of their game are strongly against? Like item degredation? This isn't a "general focusgroup"; it's a vocal minority. Strong opposition by a vocal minority that often has more extreme views than the wider group often isn't a reliable poll sample. But my comment was actually more about the general dickishness of some of the responses.- 491 replies

Not necessarily, as you'd still be operating within the confines of the defined "design-a-spell" system. Of course, it would be tricky and complex to design in a super interesting fashion. But, it's not as if it would be "just write down whatever you want to exist, in the entire world, and the game is going to create that spell for you! 8D!" It's very much like character builds; you only get to choose from a limited set of options, already, but the specific way in which you allocate points and choose aspects/components can lead to a variety of different results. Yes. As an example, the HERO/Champions system has considerable flexibility in terms of designing your own powers/spells. But it is the result of many years of careful balancing and tuning.- 491 replies

BALANCE shouldn't be a gold ticket to do really stupid and illogical things. Well, anonymity shouldn't be a golden ticket to say really stupid and illogical things either. But it does nonetheless. Magic is illogical and I think the mechanic is a reasonable approach to consider. I think people are tending to oppose it because it lacks a certain verisimilitude, and it perhaps seems a little too munchkin-like.- 491 replies

I'd say it sounds like a game designer trying to appeal to filthy casuals by making the game a cake-walk. IF that is the case, it should be an option for the super easy settings and not forced on everyone. Which reminds me, my gutter needs scrapping...- 491 replies

A spell to solely protect against friendly fire by the caster could be useful; cast it on your allies then detonate a fireball wherever you want. (The spell could briefly blink the party away the moment fireball spell goes off.) Having your opponents use it against the party would be a nasty surprise.- 491 replies
