I'm thinking if it was a female barbarian in the picture, even with an added strategic strap, there's still be a storm of feces hitting the admirer. Other than that, there's no armor in the picture, just harmful shoulder ornament, but the axes are just fi... wait.. how is he holding the left hand axe? Clearly he is a master of the rare axe back-hand Maybe... he was pounding in nails with it earlier?

D&D Bestiary?
Tamerlane replied to jivex5k's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Simply call them Starspawns to reflect their proper Lovecraftian origin. Given FFT's translation, that probably would have come out as "sunegg" or something. -
Totally ****ing unrelated to armour: "Cold = slowed/frozen" has always bugged me. You don't move slower because you're really ****ing cold. You do if you're a lizard man or an insectoid. Further derailing of the thread: Damn, man, you just reminded me of one of the stranger sights I've ever seen. It was... four years ago? Not sure exactly. One of the coldest days of the year. I was still living with my parents out in the country at the time and a bunch of wasps had made their home in an old shed that summer. So on that ball-shrinking day we trudged through the snow with hammers and goose-necks in hand to dismantle the north wall of the building. Every panel we removed would expose a little bit more of their colony. Some of them would just sit there and huddle together but tons of them flew out and tried to fight and just... died. Like, every once-in-a-while one might actually reach you and try to do something and maybe get stuck in your jacket, but for the most part, they'd just fly up and out and then drop. **** was weird. Armour should reduce damage.

Totally ****ing unrelated to armour: "Cold = slowed/frozen" has always bugged me. You don't move slower because you're really ****ing cold. And if you're cold enough to freeze in place, you've got way more serious issues than the dude swinging his sword at you. Speaking "realistically", cold would make you more clumsy and make armour more fragile. I get that it's Magic Cold! and that it is the way it is in so many games for gameplay reasons and I'm pretty much the only person ever bugged by this and it's probably because I've spent so much god damn time swinging an axe into a piece of wood in the middle of a Saskatchewan winter, but... Eh. It still bugs me.

When was the last time you ran out of (mundane) arrows in the middle of a dungeon or a battle? Because for me, the answer to that question is "never".

A critical hit could, for an instance, mean that the attacker struck the weak point in the armour. So... couldn't it just do more damage? Or apply a status effect? And wouldn't that make critical hits worthless against characters that don't rely on armour? The point is that the poll picks one random "thing that critical hits could do" and applies it to a topic that has **** all to do with critical hits. EDIT: And for the record, I support damage reduction from armour, block chance (especially against ranged attacks) from shield.
-
Why should armour not reduce damage on critical hits? That seems like an awfully arbitrary inclusion in the poll option... EDIT: Also, from Josh Sawyer's formspring: "For P:E are you thinking that armour will make a person harder to hit, or harder to damage? Or a combination of the two?" "Probably harder to damage, but I haven't discussed it in detail with Tim."

The Name's The Thing

Unnecessary. There won't be enough voice acting in the game for that to be a Big Thang. -
D&D Bestiary?

People have mentioned mindflayers as being WotC property, but... I've seen them in non-WotC games. Or one non-WotC game, at least. Now, Fina Fantasy Tactics had the advantage of its translation being so ****ing terrible that "Mindflayer" came out as "Mindflare", but still. -

A mercenary character who demands pay if you boot them could be neat, I guess. But as a general thing for every character, it would be lame as hell. God dammit Aloth, I'm just removing you for, like, two hours so I can do some quests with Cadegund. Calm your **** and hang out at the castle for a bit.

The Name's The Thing
Tamerlane replied to PsychoBlonde's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Miyagi is right, of course. I completely ignored the fact that the pre-chosen last name is useless in a game that doesn't have a lot of voice acting. Bring on the Charname! -
The Name's The Thing
Tamerlane replied to PsychoBlonde's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Eh, fair enough. I'll address 'em individually instead. No real need for that, though it won't hurt me any. All I need, really. Numbers, tildes, ampersands, and the like are just for gimmicks. That'd be cool. I hate when I don't know whether or not I should include a last name in a character field. Not inherently terrible, but I'm willing to bet that Bioware has soured a lot of people on this idea. It was particularly ridiculous in DA2 where your family apparently gave up all claim to the last name just so you could always be clear who was being talked to. These are cool. Loved them in the KotOR games. -

Given how many of those options are compatible with each-other, this should really be a multiple choice poll... -
I definitely fall on the "character build should be more important than gear" side of thangs. I mean, I love finding a good shield or ring or whatever the ****. Magic gear is Cool. But the point in Baldur's Gate where I turned my paladin's 8 dex into an 18 by slapping on some bracers? That was pretty lame, man.
