I'm not sure if its a distraction to post this here but it seemed appropriate since a lot of people seem to be against it. My opinions are pretty much synonymous with his but i feel his definition probably isn't what most people think of when they think of the trope. "It seems like a lot of people are getting tired of the "chosen one" archetype in rpgs. I for one don't mind it and like to at the very least have some sort of unique ability that sets me apart in the world whats your take on the common rpg ego stroking." George Ziets "The Chosen One archetype is one of the few RPG clichés that I like. I agree with you that it’s good to have something that sets my player apart from other people in the world. I don’t play RPGs to feel like just another random guy – when I want that, I’ll play an MMO. More importantly, I think an RPG should be the player’s story – not somebody else’s story, where the player happens to blunder in and help out with the action sequences. To the greatest extent possible, an RPG should be *about* the player, and the player should find him/herself at the center of the narrative, making most or all of the critical decisions. If that’s the case, the player is probably going to feel like a Chosen One, no matter how the trope is framed. Personally, I don’t necessarily think we need to actively ego-stroke the player, in the sense of constantly telling the player that s/he is great. But I do think we need to emphasize the impact of the player’s decisions and make sure that the cause-effect is clear. Consequences aren’t nearly as effective if the player isn’t informed, in one way or another, that they’re the direct result of the player’s choice. “Hey player, you did X, so Y and Z happened.” One other point – Chosen One can mean a lot of different things (to me, anyway). I think there are many ways to implement the trope, not all of which are “on the nose.” The player doesn’t have to be the son of a god or the Dragonborn. The player could be catapulted into the center of events because something bad happened him/her – like the curse in MotB. Or the player could be the “chosen one” simply because the game is a personal story, and everyone is the Chosen One in their own personal narrative. E.g., I felt like a Chosen One in Planescape: Torment, but I really wasn’t – the narrative revolved around me because the story was about my character." I'd rather have the your character be the "mouth piece" and have the option for your companions to interject where it makes sense.

JVC your solution of as i comprehend it (sorry if I'm misinterpreting your words.) limiting the "Perfect optimist build" that you decide based on whatever reasoning and how you play a class. To how you traditionally played a fighter or whatever would be a cool solution if they were making a game for just you and not at the very least 75 thousand people.

Isn't part of the point of this update to show that if you want to make your fighter or whatever play like it did before with little to no active abilities you can and it'll be a viable option? I say design as many active/passive abilities as they see fit and let the player choose how to mix and match and in what ratios don't give a class less abilities of a certain type just because he is that class.

Dialog mostly voiced?
Inertia replied to LordsWeapon's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Some VA i know that i definitely want in are those chants they would say before casting a spell i loved hearing them. Illusion: "Veritas, Credo, Oculos" = "The truth, I believe, with my eyes" Alteration: "Praeses, Alia, Fero" = "Protecting, another, I bring this forth" Necromancy: "Vita, Mortis, Careo" = "Life, and death, I am without" Divination: "Scio, Didici, Pecto" = "I know, for I have studied, with my mind" Abjuration: "Manus, Potentis, Paro" = "A hand, powerful, I prepare" Evocation: "Incertus, Pulcher, Imperio" = "Uncertain, beautiful things, I command" Conjuration: "Facio, Voco, Ferre" = "This I do, I call, to bring you forth" Enchantment: "Cupio, Virtus, Licet" = "I want, excellence, allowed to me" -
Buffing your party
Inertia replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I remember da2 having a feature where the effects of buffs only showed while in combat. Would you guys like to see a similar feature in PE? -
I think the stamina regeneration mech is mainly for when you're out of combat so you can move on faster instead of waiting on cds/resting where as in the old ie games you'd sit there for a couple mins casting 10x cure minor wounds to get yourself to full health assuming you didn't just rest after every fight. i think healing within the fight will still be viable.

How do you guys feel companions contributing to non combat challenges should work? While i liked soz's system if there was a skill challenge to be "won" so long as your group was some what diverse you'd be able to win it which didn't feel right to me. The other system i can think of to go off of would be in da2 and nwn2 oc where you could have a companion interrupt for you. (Qara tossing fireballs to distract the city watch or Varric smoothing someone over) but i'm not sure how something like that would work with adventurer hall companions.

To the people wanting a paladin what's the difference between a pal and a priest who plays as lawful good? Especially with char customization being seemingly open heavily armored mages and the like. As for the the hall i ended up playing solo in games where i had to create my own party so probably wont be using that good idea though. And cipher seems like the class ill go for first time around assuming we make it.

[Merged] Cooldown Thread
Inertia replied to Ieo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
How about a system where your abilities are tied to your endurance or willpower to use them. You can cast whatever you want as much as you want but there is some kinda threshold where if you cast too many powerful spells in succession the effectiveness of the abilities you are using diminish.- 661 replies

Level scaling confirmed
Inertia replied to Valorian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm not worried about how they will handle the level scaling I'm sure they have gripes with how they are done poorly in some games just as we do and hope to alleviate them in their own game. What i am worried about is the devs being more cautious about what information if any they give us in an attempt to minimize the amount of **** storm responses like this one and it becomes the slow drip feed of info publisher backed projects get. -
The LBGT "agenda"
Inertia replied to Inertia's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
so their criticisms are unfounded and i probably wouldn't be able to convince them either way. i guess that's all i wanted to know thanks. -
While trying to convince the users of the social websites i frequent to pledge to the project one of the main criticisms i get from the users is that obsidian is using this game as a platform to push a liberal and lbgt agenda. where does this criticism come from and why are people so uncomfortable with it?

J. Sawyer said "And when it comes to the idea that today's audiences don't like to read text, or that communicating a story through prose rather than through gameplay automatically represents some kind of narrative failure, Sawyer isn't sold. The idea that all players should like the same things, or that players can be segregated into "ones that like story" and "ones that like combat" seem equally fallacious to him. " "This has been bugging me a lot lately," he says. "In the past few years there's been a trend toward designing games with mechanics for people who don't like those mechanics, and it blows my mind... I look at a lot of mechanics, like 'hey, let's write dialog for people who don't like to read!' You were writing with the assumption that they do want to read some of it, right? If people don't want to read, why are we writing? And if people don't like combat, why do you have combat in it?" Which again i think he responded in a similar way in this thread already just wanted to say thanks the gods he feels this way.
