Did you actually play the game? There's quite more than that to Shale for example (she's actually a drarf turned into a golem), Alistair has the whole actualy being a heir to the throne thing and there's several ways that can turn out, Lelianna is a former spy who convinced herself god speaks to her because she got bored of being a nun, etc. They've got as much personality to them as the PoE companions.

How do you rate PoE
falchen replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Would have given it 4.5 if that was an option, it does have flaws but is an awesome game anyway. -
RPGCodex Review #1 - Hŵrpa Dwrp
falchen replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Eh, most of what he says is true, but in many cases I disagree with the conclusion. Like no pre-buffing or kitting are things I see as a possitive. Pre-buffing in particular, there was no challenge or fun in putting up all your buffs before a fight in the IE games, the only cost to doing this was real life time it took to cast everything. There was no reason not to cast every buff you have, PoE buffs actually involve some strategy as there is an oportunity cost to using them. Kitting just feels gamey, having a character run around in circles while enemies chase him feels silly and unrealistic. You shouldn't be able to just run away if an enemy engages your squishy caster, actually try to stop that from happening, or CC them if it does... or alternatively don't make the caster squishy, there's a reason even wizards can use plate in this game. Per-Encounter abilities giving every character something usefull to do in every fight? This is a good thing. Items being samey actually keeps itemization balanced and you aren't pidgeon holed into designing your party around the god tier artifacts. I do agree with his review of the stat system (perception and con are dump stats), feats and talents (a lot of useless ones, particularly the defensive and utility ones) and skills, as well as class balance, those areas could use some work, but feel each of those is still a huge improvement over IE games even so. Not going to write a review but my conclusion would be that PoE is simply a much better, modern Baldur's Gate - which is just what I expected and wanted. -
Well, the player voice sets that were "professionally" done are pretty bad. There's maybe one decent one, and one more that's good enough. Plus Aloth sounds racially confused. He keeps jumping between Noble Elven Wizard and Anx infused Dwarven berserker. His lines are all over the map. Not impressed with his VO at all. Some of the others in game are ok, some would better silent as well. And yet fan voice acting would be worse than even that. Seriously though, if more voicework was feasible obsidian would have likely included it to begin with. As for Aloth, that gets explained later on.

Why do you all even care? I think there was nothing wrong with the limerick and wouldn't mind if it had stayed but I care even less that it was removed. Complaining about it in the first place was dumb, removing it was dumb, complaining that it was removed is just as dumb. Just let it be, it doesn't matter.

What to do with Maerwald

The knowledge option gives you access to an otherwise unaccessible treasury in endless paths. -
Random loot generation
falchen replied to dukefx's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
They could spread the items out randomly but guarantee that each will drop somewhere. Like if a location has a chance to drop gloves of manipulation or boots of stealth, if one of those drops the second such location will have the other. -
I'm not enjoying this game
falchen replied to Bigby's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Guess this is a matter of opinion then. Personally I seem to remember the characters in BG1 being pretty barebone, BG2 expanded this some but then most of that character development was romance content. The probably most fondly remembered and memorable character didn't even have much of a storyline or quests, Minsc was just funny/awesome one liners. -
Obsidian said that they set out to make a game like the infinity engine games, expect this means different things to diferent people. As a consequence you have people complaining about great features like aoe loot, just because it didn't work like that in Baldur's Gate, whine whine. In my opinion they suceeded, but for someone who enjoyed a particular feature of those games which got changed might feel dissapointed, because it is not "IE like without feature X". This being a kickstarter funded game also did give people a (false) sense of entitlement, like they figured since they funded it obsidian has to create *their* perfect game.

Honestly I thought this is is some kind of joke option like big head mode, didn't know ligatures actually serve a purpose. Interesting.

Is my difficulty bugged?
falchen replied to preaCor's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Yep, this makes a huge difference, as do levels since there is no level scaling. Like the temple of eothas in gilded vale kicked my ass the first time I went in with just Aloth and Eder, but just two levels more and a full party made it a cakewalk. -
Oh, I got my answer already. I think I already thanked the guys above. I merely think that the skill system doesn't fit organically into the game mechanics (race, class system, character histories, etc.) and I am discussing this with all those who are willing to discuss this with me. This discussion helps me to better understand the game world and to build more realistic characters which improves the game experience for me. That's all. Nevermind then. Agreed, the skill system isn't this game's strong point, think they made it intentionally simplistic so you aren't stuck having to bring along "skill monkey" characters (something I actually appreciate though!).

I'm not enjoying this game
falchen replied to Bigby's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This game is a better, modern baldur's gate, did you play and like those games? Not sure what you were expecting here, think the devs were clear about what kind of game they are making. I feel like they delivered just what they promised and then some. I don't agree to combat being secondary either, that's pretty much the main meat of the game so if you don't enjoy that I see why you'd be disapointed, but then again combat in the IE games was just like this but worse. -
Random loot generation
falchen replied to dukefx's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I think it's bad, on my first playthough I found gauntles of manipulation (+2 mechanics) as well as a ranger cloak that boosts stalker's bond twice. Second playthrough, still didn't run across either. Just cheated and consoled them into my inventory but I shouldn't have had to do that in my opinion, if these items don't drop every game at least make them buyable somewhere. -
What kind of advice are you actually asking for? Like we told you what the skills do and how much you should have of each. Whether having more than one character with high lore or survival depends on if you like to use consumables and scrolls on that character, athletics is usefull for everyone because of the fatigue gains and skill challenges, only one character needs mechanics, high stealth on everyone could be usefull but then you wouldn't have points for other skills so you just keep it low to average. And lastly having high lore (and maybe survival) could be fun for the player character due to conversations they unlock.

Companions attributes - Roleplay?
falchen replied to BG4eva's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Actually the companions were designed when perception sitll gave accuracy so it wasn't such a dump stat for non-tanks. That said, with the patch that changed them the only one with actually bad stats now is Grieving mother in my opinion. The rest are quite useable. Talent selection could still use work though, currently it just encourages you to rush to them at the lowest level so they don't screw themselves up too badly.. -
update today?
falchen replied to FrankFore20's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It's under annoucements, fix for doors not opening for some people. -
Unlimited rest option?
falchen replied to jaydee.2k's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
The resting limitation is just a time waster, since I can always backtrack to the nearest inn or the keep. There should be an option to turn it on/off just as you can toggle the stash. -
Better without stronghold?
falchen replied to halfoat's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I like the stronghold though they definitely could have done more with it.
