Zoraptor
Wasnt there some joint euro US space ventures that got all screwed up cos the EU used metric and the US didn't? SOHO, though that was eventually fixed and iirc is still operational today. The most famous outright failure from conversion error is probably the Mars Climate Orbiter where the satellite pancaked into Mars. Non space, but there's also the Gimli Glider incident which is 100% worth reading about (or watch the Mayday/ Air Crash Investigation ep) just because it's a pretty awesome story.
injurai
Every time that picture gets posted, I have to bring up the following up. YMD is superior above all else, and the American format is actually MD,Y a colloquial reformatting of YMD. Europe can stay losing, the rest of the enlightened world uses YMD. That's dumb, the only reason to have YMD is for documents that will be read by archeologists. MDY makes sense if you're trying to track down a document as they will undoubtedly be stored by year. You go from greater to smaller in a way that its actually functional and not having to look at documents that start with the year of the box you just pulled them off. No duh is the same year; it might seem little but when you're sifting through thousands every little bit helps. I'm confused, sounds like you agree that YMD/MD,Y are the superior formats. Each has its function and should be kept to it. For archiving purposes YMD works best, for information that has a shorter term of relevance MDY, and for everyone else that can't be bothered with corporate or scientific bull**** DMY. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.

Yeah, that's fair. I acknowledge the general context benefit of DMY, it's more that infographic thinks it's the one true format since it has a cute little pyramid.

teknoman2
as far as i know, YMD is the standard used for archiving in most places. the MDY and DMY formats were created due to the common verbal pronunciation of a date in each language. saying "May first twenty eighteen" rolls off the tongue easier than "first of May twenty eighteen", so the written form of it became 5/1/2018 to match. in languages like italian where the verbal pronunciation of a date is "primo Maggio due mila diciotto", the written format was set to 1/5/2018 to match. The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder. -Teknoman2- What? You thought it was a quote from some well known wise guy from the past? Gfted1
I just use d, m, y (29 Apr 18). Its programmed in from the military I guess. Wrt metric, the problem for me is, I cant mentally visualize mm and cm and stuff like that. I can mentally picture inches, I just glance at something and think "that's 12 inches", but mm and cm are all like "that's 304.8mm". Wth man. We tend to look at everything in cm until their height gets to meters, we ignore decimeters and skip to meters. Gromnir
warning: although the following is a video from c-span, there is a few instances of off-color humor and vulgar language. not bad for a whcd routine. a few funny moments. a few uncomfortable moments. am knowing invocation o' franken is verboten these days, but both of his whcd routines were fantastic. Chilloutman
1 I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"
