The US Election 2016, Part VIII

am a little surprised that trump were able to claim a personal loss o' +$900 million.  we were under the impression that much o' the loss for his numerous failed businesses were shouldered by investors, which if true is a bit mind boggling.  if $900 million is actual only a small fraction o' the total money lost by investors, then we wonder why anybody would look to trump to fix america's financial problems.  sure, wall street already avoids him, but am not sure why the public is buying his snake oil. even so, we expected that trump had taken a considerable loss and were using that loss to reinvigorate his real estate holdings. so this ain't much o' a bombshell.

My family (who range from Reagan Republicans to democratic socialists of the Swedish school) has known him to be an ostentatious and crass huckster for the 30 years since he became a public figure (and myself since I was 13 when I started reading Doonesbury), so it strikes me as at least a little odd that a not insignificant portion of the electorate hasn't caught on to this fact when they had that 30 years of history to work that out for themselves.

Are you saying Egypt actually adopted the US constitution and that's why Arab spring didn't work out?

"Egypt actually adopted the US constitution "

Just the thought of that  concept makes this post the funniest and most ridiculous suggestion anyone has said in ages on these forums, this even makes volo's  comments seem normal

Well done WOD, you definitely get the famous and revered BruceVC award for  the " most absurd and unlikely post to make "

Sometimes you guys really are funny and the funniest thing about it is I dont think you mean to be humorous

This is what Gromnir said:  "given how well the arab spring worked out, perhaps a different kinda Constitution would be a good starting point." Since we were discussing alternatives to the US Constitution, I asked if he meant "different to the US Constitution".

Are you saying Egypt actually adopted the US constitution and that's why Arab spring didn't work out? She wasn't just talking about Egypt, she's clearly saying anyone writing a constitution should take SA constitution as a model, not US constitution. Of course the SA constitution was written by Marxists, while US constitution is probably the most anti-Marxist document ever written, so there you are.

The SA constitution wasn't written by Marxists ....what are you talking about ?

The SA constitution was and is very well constructed, there are certain things the USA could adopt but it wouldn't be suitable overall for a country like the USA

For example we believe that everyone has a right to dignity so certain aspects of Freedom of Speech would be considered very offensive to the dignity of people so that would immediately clash with the USA view around Freedom of Speech which we have often discussed

As I often try to explain to you guys in the USA we believe in free speech but certain words are considered unacceptable. This seems to be contradictory but this is because of the history of Apartheid which has a degree of relevance in our laws

You're saying it wasn't written by the ANC? And you just confirmed your believes are Marxist, because you believe only in "approved" free speech. I would recommend the latest copy of the Soviet constitution to you and Ginsberg, it's very well constructed and hits all the SJW g-spots.

Throwing the SJW label at Ginsberg is ridiculous.  The woman was born in 1933, she has overcome a tremendous amount of adversity to get where she is today.

Yeah, SJW's were called "Stalinists" when she was born.

Given that the stuff he's released has had evidence of being tampered with, probably will do more to confirm his status as a butt buddy for Putin.

Overhype is overhype.

Unless there's actual evidence of her having involvement in the murder of Seth Rich, then it's just another ploy in this theatre. Either way, just sit back and enjoy the popcorn.

Most "revolutionaries" and intelligentia, active in the 60's and 70's in the western democracies, were self-professed stalinists, trotskyists or maoists. Nothing strange about that really.

Most of the trotskyists moved on to be neo-conservatives btw.

And the revolutionaries prior to that were the Jacobins and the revolutionaries prior to that were America's founding fathers.

Truly all these groups are one in the same.

The one thing nobody has said about the DNC etc leaks is that it was falsified, indeed the whole point of Red Scare 2.0 was to get people talking about the, uh, red herring of who did the hacks instead of what was in them precisely because they were genuine. If they could have proven they were false, they would have.

You're probably getting your Russophobe knee jerks confused, it was (supposedly) DCLeaks, not wikileaks, that got some altered stuff.

There's tons of stuff that could end her campaign- proper outright bribery or anything else of significant illegality. I doubt it actually will, if only because it's so late in the piece and some are so invested that she'd probably try and stick it out (or claim it's false) whatever it is. Plus, Assange is a salesman, he may be gilding the lily in terms of how significant anything he has actually is.

No you are right. A picture of a Russian agent personally handing her a suitcase full of cash and audio of her ordering the murder of Seth Rich or even Vince Foster would change nothing. Those that are for her will convince themselves it isn't true. And even if they did believe it that wouldn't make Trump a better candidate than he already is. Those who are for her will still be for her and those against will still be against.

although lumping all three together is a bit misguided.  regardless, analogizing post war revolutionaries and and the current sjw movement is "strange."  is "strange" at best.

Trying to lump Ginsberg in with any of them is patently silly.  The woman broke down gender barriers every step she took, it is hardly a surprise that she is liberal.  That doesn't make her a commie, and it is laughable to lump her in with the SJW movement.  She overcame legitimate obstacles to get where she is.

I'm not saying anyone needs to agree with her stances, far from it.  But if you can't respect someone like Ginsberg for the journey she made, then I feel bad for you.  You've been blinded by politics.  Maybe take a lesson from Justice Scalia.

Great point. Ginsburg and Scalia were good friends and often socialized together with their families. I read an article in the paper yesterday that showed polls where people are losing friends over support of one candidate or another. Or even one political philosophy over another. One of my colleagues had an argument with her daughter over politics and they are not speaking. This is stupid. It is literally like hating someone for being a fan of a different sports team. I told her more than 100 million votes will be cast. He daughter voting for Hillary Clinton will not make her President. Even if she convinced her to vote for Trump that once vote will not make him president.

This "problem" we are having where people are becoming so politically polarized is not healthy. And it starts with the Candidates. Trump and Clinton both are not just adding logs to the fire, they are adding gasoline soaked logs to the fire. Obama was no better, referring to people who would not support him as "enemies" and Clinton calling them "deplorables". Trump is nothing but bombast "punch him in the face!" and other comments.

What will make it worse is if either of them gets elected and they try to ram through something radical right away. Like Obama did with the ACA and did it in such a scorched earth way. The next President needs to start out with a conciliatory tone like GWB did after 2000. Start out with some basic bread-and-butter actions that a divided Congress will support and will not piss anyone off. That would help. Trump would never do that though. Clinton probably would not either. And that is a shame.
