Hiro Protagonist Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Is it just me or is there a lot of doom, gloom, rage, fear, whinge, OMG life sucks threads around... Rather than open yet another whinge thread about that, I thought I'd just open a thread to say it's all good, I'm looking forward to things, life is pretty awesome really, the beer's cold, the weather's not, and people in general are on the whole quite decent and often far more clever and interesting than they sound. That's it, really. 7

Europeans have a version for them incoming(http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transatlantic_Trade_and_Investment_Partnership). The Kickstarter bubble popped with PoE and all new RPGs will be romance simulators. The era of good TV is over with GoT and films are close behind. Forums will ban anyone who is "impolite". We will all be forced to eat what the British consider food, which is boiled everything. Putin's law banning memes spreads depriving us of the maymays. ManifestedISO Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Weather has indeed been great, cool and cloudy, off and on for weeks, just like I like. Tomorrow I'll be in western Missouri, in case anyone needs anything from tornado country. Hopefully the hotel will have NBC so I can watch Monaco. All Stop. On Screen.
Oerwinde Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 The only beer I drink is Mort Subite Frambois, which is like $4 a bottle, so I can't afford beer, and Strongbow is like $14 for a 6 pack, so that ain't happening either. Meat prices have gone up like 70% while wages have gone up 10%, so I'm going to be forced into vegetarianism by economics. On the other hand, I have way too many games to play, and there is an overabundance of great TV thanks to Netflix and HBO pushing the boundaries of scripted Drama, and reality TV being a non-entity for streaming services making networks move towards scripted shows in order to take advantage of streaming revenues. So its an escapist's wonderland nowadays. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Agiel Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlBiLNN1NhQ 1 Quote “Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.” -Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>> Quote "The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete." -Rod Serling

Walsingham Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 (edited) *preamble snipped* Overall I think the depressive tone is due to the domination of electronic media by teenagers. Teenagers, and a worrying number of 'grown children' think being cynical about things they've never experienced shows how mature they are. Maturity comes with getting s*** done. And nothing stops you getting s*** done like sitting around on your arse saying nothing will ever work and we're all doomed. And nothing inoculates against you sitting around talking doom like achieving goals and setting high standards. So why the seventeen vibrant shades of f*** would you be proud of being a cynic??? BruceVC Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 No we are in the greatest era of mankind. Things have never looked better actually, we can cure more diseases and more people are educated than ever before we now are a global world that is interconnected and this positively effects what countries can do and how they act. For example the chances of another Rwanda or Khmer Rouge are very remote ( yes NK is an anomaly due to the Nuclear threat and Chinese support ) We now know sanctions work...this reduces the risk of full scale war to implement political changes (Like Iran) It is now irrefutable that the happiest people in the world live in Western countries. So we now have a framework for what types of governments work and how to generally uplift people. Its not hard to understand that Western style Democracies( despite the challengers) that include components like a respect for human rights, free press and free and fair elections do work and should be copied globally Most of you guys may seem morose but you suffer from perceived first-world views of issues which are not actually that serious in the global picture..the rest of us are dealing with real social and political issues but there is still more good than bad 1 "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. Nonek Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Beautiful weather for late spring, a nice breeze in the air, a long weekend off thanks to the bank holiday, my workouts have been pleasantly exhausting, the walks with Fido long and refreshing, the cider at the Thirsty Traveller cold and plentiful, my fellow drinkers companionable and humorous, Mrs Nonek has never looked so fine and is blossoming thanks to her usual springtime exercise regime, and the little ones are running around like mad in the garden and pool. The architecture of a good life I think. A few hours of adventure and derring do in the Witcher 3 just adds to this pleasant weekend, I think that I shall partake in a little more before dinner. Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin. Tea for the teapot!

Not that it is a bad thing to chase after your own pleasures but it is extremely unrealistic of a goal. You literally cannot be happy more than not. I like the concept of contentment. That I am comfortable with my place in the world. Not completely mind you, I'm not preaching death of desire here. But a general feeling that things are ok is something to strive for. To be fair, that's what most people mean when they say happiness anyways. But the wording can coax expectations of eternal bliss. It's good to criticize things you love.

Are people proud of being depressed and cynical...or are they merely depressed and cynical? Quote How I have existed fills me with horror. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart. In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

Good question. I draw a definite distinction between applying critical judgement and being 'cynical' as a position. But can't you see that a cynic's reaction to terrorism, bad laws etc is to view them as an overall trend that cannot be fought, as opposed to abberations which should be tackled? "It wasn't lies. Malcador Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 A cynical reaction to it would be that the laws spawned to fight it and the wars launched over it are just a cover for government overreach or just money for the war industry.
