I think I prefer multi-player for a couple of reasons:

 

1) Im bored playing by myself. For example, D3 is significantly more fun for me when playing in a group.

2) On the rare occasion that you get a good pug or are part of a good dedicated group, I dig seeing the synergy of skilled players learning and then dominating a tough encounter. To this day I still remember the excitement and my heart pounding in my chest the first time we beat Ragnaros (WoW end boss for Cataclysm expansion). Good times.

I'm a single player gamer for the most part, though more exclusively of late. I kind of view anything that doesn't at least inspire stories from me to be something of a waste of my time. Even multiplayer games can do that for a while, a good an intense session will generate ideas. But after I play them for a while and it seems like I've seen it all, that kind of goes away.

 

I was already picky about what I liked to play online as it was, and with my PC down, I'm not exactly burdened with a plethora of multiplayer games that I could enjoy if I wanted to. So I don't play any at the moment. Console shooters are all very bleh with limited exception, and I respect my time too much for the grind of MMOs.

Singleplayer here... I generally have one, and only one MP game at the side though.

 

Used to be Enemy Territory, then switched to SW:TOR when it got F2P, and now it's Payday 2, all of them really only to play with friends.

 

But it's rather hard to get people to join up with me to play :/

Singleplayer I can always do whenever I have the mood. Shame more and more of them decrease in quality due to forced bad MP... *sigh*

Wasn't the end boss of Cataclysm Deathwing? But yeah, multiplayer can have some memorable moments.

 

One of the funniest was when we did our first split group (2x10man group, because not enough lvl80s for a 25man raid) raid in Wrath of the Lich King and we had a bear of a time with the first boss in Naxxramas (the beetle, don't remember his name), to the point where someone looked up tactics, which didn't match with what we were seeing...at all (damage on tanks was insane, more adds were spawning than tactics said, it was a pretty big *wtf*). Turned out we were 10manning 25man Naxxramas in Black Temple/Sunwell gear, since we forgot about the, then new, 10/25man raid toggle, ouch...)

 

Unfortunately the LFG system, the raid finder and all the other cross-realm features hollowed out the sense of commitment between guildies as well as the sense of community on a realm.

I played WoW for years and was about halfway through the bosses in... Firelands?  Something like that.  Playing with a guild was fun, but I also found that I was increasingly losing my life to WoW.  I was forgoing doing stuff with friends in real life to play online.  I was out of work, had no care about anything in real life, and gained a huuuuge amount of weight.  I'm not saying WoW is to blame for that.  *I* am to blame for that, but taking a break from multiplayer was absolutely necessary.  I do sometimes miss some of the things my gifted friend and mare enjoy about finally beating a boss with my guildies.

 

For right now, I'm doing single player only, but I would be willing to try a new multiplayer game or even an MMORPG if it had a good amount of single playable content and I could experiment with a little MP on the side.

I probably bias towards single player, though that's because multiplayer has an inherent handicap in that the game genres most commonly seen in multiplayer - FPS, RTS, ARPG - are those that I don't enjoy playing regardless.

 

That's me, just add MMORPG to the list of genres I've never enjoyed much.

 

A co-worker has pulled me into a few multiplayer sessions.  Mostly Torchlight 2 and Borderlands.  I had fun, but the games were not the sort of thing I'd generally seek out were it not for the fellowship element.  We're trying to play some co-op Divinity: Original Sin, but scheduling has been a challenge.

One time I joined up with a guild in an MMO, and over a couple months I realized that the majority of the members were on disability and seemed incredibly unhealthy.  Of course they were zooming by me on the content (even during my summer break!) so I ended up leaving, but it was hard to see people so utterly involved in a videogame that they neglect their health.  Limits are important.

MMOs are absolutely fascinating places to learn about all walks of people. Star Wars Galaxies is the fuel for half the story ideas I want to tell. Personal lives, in-game actions, and everything in between. From the people willing to betray their own guild Jedi (to me) to the one guild that was run by a lesbian couple only to find out that one of the two is a man. It was absolutely heartbreaking to the guild founder. Who we later found out was also a man.

EVE's great for out of game drama. Also teaches valuable life lessons about how to cope with loss and how everyone is indeed an enemy
