Yay! I'm a great ape! 7/9!

Then again, I've watched alot of Roslings talks and such. I answered wrong on lifespan and literacy rate.

Also, Rosling is a pretty damn great TED talker, I've never had someone make statistics fun! :D

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

Afraid to say I got the same score, although it could of been worse, I was 0/7 at one stage.

Was surprised by some answers though,

was surprised by the high literacy rate and the amount of years women spend in school. I thought less developed counties would bring those numbers down more.

I was off to a very bad start when I spend around 4 minutes just trying to find the test. Only to realize the graph in the middle of the article was the test.. it did not improve much from there..

Me Tarzan 7/9.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

2/9 as well.  I tended to err on the side of bleakness, some of the gains were quite positive.

Okay that settles it, this test is a SHAM and reeks of subterfuge.

I can understand myself getting 2/9 but Hurlshot getting 2/9 is not possible. He is a teacher you stooooopid test.

****ing Asia population.

That was the easiest question you uncivilized great ape.

Posted

Got to say: surely Asia's population is just obvious?

The literacy and women's education, and pay distribution also got me.

I found the income distribution to be the most interesting. Assuming the data is sound it rather gives the lie to some vast conspiracy forcing people down into serfdom. Normal distributions are what you get when outcomes are affected by a great man random(ish) variables.

And now it's going to turn out that I've misunderstood normal distributions and I shall feel like a moran <sic> all day.

So I watched the documentary, because population is something that really interests me. And it was on pretty much from an hour and a half ago till half an hour ago, very convenient when you get BBC2!

He paints a nice picture, but ignores the environmental impact of the poorest 3 billion people's increased living standards. He notes that population growth will flatline, which is correct, but not until AFTER we reach numbers which are unsustainable. (especially since the numbers we have TODAY are unsustainable) And while it will flatline, that still means 4 billion more souls in the coming 87 years.

He's absolutely correct in that good things are happening.

They're just not happening fast enough, on a large enough scale, and not enough of what needs to happen is happening.

(like energy independence from non-renewables)

Nevertheless, good watch.

I was most surprised by the fact that only 1& is coming from non-renewables. Even I didn't think it was that low.

EDIT: I'm such a dingus. That should have read non-renewables.

I think.

Same here (7/9). I've got a way more bleak outlook on population numbers and wealth distribution. It doesn't help that population numbers may flatline if it's way beyond the point of sustainability. Scarce resources has always been a great source of aggression.

6/9, U.S.

Got literacy rate wrong, (chose 60% instead of 80%), wealth distribution, (chose A instead of B), and completely got the women's average number of years in postsecondary education wrong, (3 instead of 7). Didn't mind getting them wrong, though. :)
