I think it's only sensible to remind you gentlemen that oby isn't even a woman, let alone Russian. It's been amusing to pretend otherwise, but don't start discussing 'her' views as if they are representative. The only thing they represent is someone with some sort of mild mental disorder.

I think it's only fair to remind you that "he" is the male pronoun. ;)

* I think you just made a mistake there, but I know you are smarter than me so I'm not going to say anything*

Probably several. It's a side effect of the pact I've made with Lord Kinbote.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

, let alone Russian.

To be fair Walsie that is just speculation. I have always thought Oby was a Russian male living in Russia.

I can only assume that as that is what he says. Until we can see evidence contrary to this or Oby states otherwise I'll continue to think that :)

Actually, I'm terrified. It's my assumption (based on what I hear from my Russianf friends) that his views reflect the current official view of Finns in Russia. When a country of 143 000 000 inhabitants starts promulgating views like that of its neighbor of 5 400 000 people, I have the urge to prepare for the worst.

Or it's just that they've noticed that Finnish/Russian marriages are weighed like 10:1 towards Finnish husbands and Russian wives. Possible feelings of inadequacy? ;)

I'm thinking it's butthurt from the war, you know, when the "genetically superior russians" got their hineys kicked?

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

Heh, and apparently Cameron's going all "we've won a great step forwarf for morality" over setting things up that all UK isp's will have a default "parent-filter" that households will have to opt out of to get access to internet porn.

Hm, how much longer before they start adding other filters that get much more quietly mentioned so people are aware or not..  <quietly paranoid moment>

There is nothing interesting about oby which isn't more interesting when considered in the context of Fionavar.

Just getting settled in here

I tried to post something earlier because I had a few hour layover in Amsterdam but I was either too drunk or too tired to get it right. I spent most of the flight from the US sipping bourbon and playing Civ 5.

As far as the whole racial purity thing my wife's family mostly identifies themselves as Russian but they are as mixed as I am. A lot of Finnish and Estonian and even a little Chinese blood in the family tree

Other than that everyone has been pretty nice. Whenever I try to use the few Estonian or Russian words that I know people tend to respond to me in English and seem genuinely friendly. I didn't see much of Tallinn but we will be going back for a few days towards the end of our trip and Narva is.... different. A lot of Soviet era buildings that I can't tell apart make it difficult to navigate even though it's pretty small

Hmm, is it morally wrong to date someone 2/3's of your age? I'm honestly conflicted..

My first thought was "of course not," but then I thought about what 2/3rd of my age was and it creeped me out.

It really depends.  A 60 year old dating a 40 year old isn't that crazy.

I'm assuming you are at more of a 30 year old with a 20 year old place, which isn't terrible.  But you'll need a pretty mature 20 year old if you don't want to regret it.

The best scenario is a 3 year old dating a 2 year old.  The creepiest is an 18 year old with a 12 year old.

As I recall, the accepted formula for this kind of thing that the partner must be at least (your age)/2 + 7.  So, solving for a 2/3 ratio, Ros must be at least 42 years old in order for this not to be creepy.  (Wow, it's been a long time since I've done algebra.  Somebody double-check me.)

That said, "creepy" doesn't necessarily mean "morally wrong."  If the proposed partner is of sufficient temporal, emotional, and intellectual maturity that he or she knows what he or she is getting into, it's not morally wrong in my book.

Lol, not sure what to make of that - but knowing you - something depraved and wonderfully decadent.

Its not weird if you get on and can communicate. As Hurlshot mentioned the maturity difference may be your biggest challenge but to be honest you don't strike me as someone who over-analyzes those types of things so early in a relationship. I always believe you only deal with issues when they become issues, no need to pre-empt possible problems. If you are having fun that should be good enough to see where the relationship goes

I'm 38 and almost all my g-friends are 25-29. I am fine with that and it works for me

It being morally wrong is dependent on a lot other than the age, I'd imagine. You're not taking advantage of her or deceiving her somehow, I assume, so she's willing to engage with a relatively sound mind.

As long as you're both legal age I don't see any serious issue. That said, for me personally, I do tend to find it kinda weird when one is, oh say, 75 and the other is 25. :disguise:

And as Hurlshot said, even outside of how mature they may seem/behave, sometimes if the other is below 20ish, they may not really know what they want yet (compared to the one who is a fair bit older), either from life or from relationships, and thus the couple may find themselves growing apart rather fast. But that can also happen to any couple, so I don't see it as a reason to not try.

Phew, yeah thank the gods.. but you gotta be careful these days man, some of the >18 year olds look older than they are.. Luckily there are usually a few expressions and phrases used primarily by >20, so I've made a point of sorting potentials based on slang. :D
