Old thread here.

Console developers also use drivers and API? There are benefits to using drivers, Nvidia or AMD know their hardware. DirectX was used on Xbox and 360, and an OpenGL based API was used on PS3. It really depends what the developer is doing, if it's something not supported in the API then not having direct access could be expensive. Developers on PC could have written their own drivers and gotten direct access to hardware, or made their own OS and gotten direct access, if it was a big deal they would have.

I think the differences in graphics between console and similarly spec'd PCs is more down to which was the target platform, having narrower FOV, massive gun models (if FPS), sitting further away.

Because writing drivers and operating systems for the myriad of PC configuration just so your game could have a better access to hardware is realistic.

Remember the good old days when you had to manually configure your sound cards for games like Doom?  Ah, good times....

No I do not. Because I did not have enough memory to run sound drivers and DOOM at the same time.

I played that game completely deaf, nonstop, for 2 years.

It's not like they would have to write them from scratch, and key manufacturers would be supplying drivers if direct access was such a big deal. You're arguing against yourself, it's not realistic because direct access to hardware is not important.

Not really.

The benefit of direct access is certainly there.

It's just that difficulty of achieving it on PCs is simply staggering.

It's the price you have to pay for not-standardized hardware.

You don't have to come up with a thousand dollars until November.  Pre-orders are just promises to buy later. I can only promise for one console.

The potential for a quick ebay sale later this year is good, I think, but I will also say that Amazon has four different guaranteed-launch-day-delivery PS4 bundles, available for the last ten days, all of which still listed in the top ten biggest sellers in video games, with Day One Xbox One also still available. In other words, it's relatively easy to reserve a new console right now, despite the fact pre-order totals for both consoles peaked at 2500 units per minute June 10-14. Also Gamestop told its managers to accept an unlimited amount of PS4 pre-orders for an indefinite amount of time, for now. I'm just saying, don't gamble on multiple pre-orders unless you can.

Edit: Or not. You can always cancel it the day before it ships.

Buying consoles is kind of like marriage, and preorders are a lot like getting engaged. It's really only acceptable to get a second one after you've used the first one heavily and gotten tired of what it has to offer. Being engaged to two people at the same time is just being a cheat.

I remember days where I had to spent hours configuring memory management in autoexec.bat and config.sys, just to be able to play Privateer on my fathers company 386DX-33 with only 4MB of RAM and lot of company software running on boot-up :p

I am actually deep in the PS4 crowd, but I think, I will do the same what I have done with PS3... Wait until they release the first slim model with lower power consumption. My backlog on PS3 is still so big and with all the games which will be released this year, it is still lot of fun to have with my current baby :p

I think I am set for one or two more years... I am just happy that with my higher age come bigger patience, so I do not need to spent ridiculous amount of money on my hobbies anymore... I still remember to buy me 2500EUR PC just to be able to play Neverwinter Nights 2 on release day...

*sighs*

It is good that with age comes bundled with the shorter memory span also wisdom and patience :p

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. If I remember correctly, didn't loading your mouse high actually use more conventional memory than just load=mouse.com?

There was something strange like that I figured out trying to get Xargon to work.

You see, ever since the whole Doritos Locos Tacos thing, Taco Bell thinks they can do whatever they want.

Posted (edited)

Not that I know. Though maybe sometimes it wouldn't fit in high memory and defaults back to conventional memory since it's usually loaded last? If expanded memory isn't required, the NOEMS option results in a bit more memory for stuff like the mouse driver.

That said, if something had to be sacrificed to free more memory, DOSKEY was probably the first to go.

I think XP and Dosbox caused me to suppress all of that. I remember being proud of having around 610K of available conventional memory while running Win95 back in the day while still having access to everything in DOS mode.

Now, it's almost all Greek to me. I can't remember what rem does, or what UMB is. God only knows what were to happen if I loaded up Turbo Pascal or Q/Watcom/Visual Basic (probably nothing.) Guess I should take a refresher.

Next thing you know; they'll get rid of having to have the stupid camera, and drop the price by $100. Then the only thing going against it will be all the bad will they got from the crap they tried to pull.

"rem" denotes a comment, i.e. the text that follows is not executed, I assume it's short for remark. Handy so you don't have to remember and retype the various changes you need to make from game to game.

UMBs are just the bits of memory originally reserved for various specialised functions that had mostly become redundant in later times, and therefore the memory was 'reclaimed' for general use.

They REALLY need to follow through with this.  Indies have been the driving force behind innovation for quite a while now, while big AAA titles have, for the most part, grown stagnant.  If they don't allow indies to self-publish their indie library will be a barren wasteland.

I hope they come up with something much better this time around. It can be hard finding the good ones, like a needle in a haystack at times. I usually find out about the good ones after they port them to PC. Perhaps come up with a spotlight or something to direct peoples attention.
