Hurlshort Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Lord of the Rings Online - After 6 years of playing this, I think it is safe to say it is the greatest game I have ever played. Turbine has really done a masterful job of recreating Middle Earth, and my Captain is easily the best class of character I have ever played in an RPG. It's just so deep, but despite that I can take a few months off and come back without feeling lost. Right now I'm working my way with the Rangers towards Isengard. Basically I am nearing the end of the second book after 6 years of playing the game. They still have Gondor and Mordor to build, so I imagine I've still got a couple years of story to tell. Brilliant. I do wonder what Turbine will do next. 1
Nordicus Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) Torchlight 2, playing with my Berserker lady on Veteran difficulty I've died 25 times with that character so far (haven't even finished a single playthrough), yet I still feel strangely powerful. Must be because she shreds HP bars so fast and has various sources of life leech. Her weaknesses and strengths lie are completely different from my mages, there's one end-game creep that usually nukes me from distance when I play a mage, but it apparently doesn't fight nearly as well at close distance Edited April 9, 2013 by Nordicus
Keyrock Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) I'm in the initial stages of X3: Terran Conflict, playing a Terran Defender. As per usual for me, my initial goal is just to make enough money to buy a small transport. Starting off with a poorly armed M4 (light fighter) is always slow going for me. I'm not a fan of M4s, they're a middle ground and sort of represent the worst of both worlds to me. They don't really have enough firepower to take on ships much larger than themselves even when fully armed, much less with meager starting weaponry. I could conceivably take down an M3 (heavy fighter), but it will be a rather tough battle, and if there's more than one of them, forget it. On the other hand, they don't always have enough speed to get out of dodge if caught in a bad spot. An M5 (scout) may be REALLY weak in a fight, but at least if I decide to flee, nothing, outside of other M5s, can keep up with me, and I can even outrun many missiles. They gave me a Rapier (M5), but I'll stick with the M4 for now because of the larger cargo hold. Trading with a fighter is not really a good way to make money fast, but it's better than nothing, and I can't stand to travel from place to place with an empty cargo hold, it's just such a waste (that's my Teladi side talking). Once I get enough money I'll sell the M4 and buy a TS (small transport), likely a Vulture. I prefer Teladi and Boron transports, because they tend to have the most cargo room. I'll hold on to the M5 since it will be useful for time sensitive missions, exploration, and won't fetch much of a selling price anyway. Edit: As an aside, it's embarrassing how rusty and poor of a shot I am at the moment. It really shows that I haven't played a space sim, nor used my flightstick, for a couple of years. With practice, I'll get my skills back eventually. Edited April 9, 2013 by Keyrock 1 RFK Jr 2024 "Any organization created out of fear must create fear to survive." - Bill Hicks
entrerix Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 i have never heard of x3, but that description sounds really fun to me Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. BruceVC Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I have just finished Far Cry 3 and I give it a solid 80/100 I spent about 75 hours playing the game, seriously what can you do nowadays for that long that only costs $35. I thought the game was excellent, I enjoyed the hunting and exploring the island and I liked the way there was an important main quest but there was also the incentive to do other things. Ubisoft has obviously decided that the whole climbing up towers or tall buildings in order to see parts of a map should be a standard part of there games and I like that feature. To be honest I stopped climbing the radio masts when I got to the Privateer controlled part of the Island but that was near the end anyway I highly recommend this game to all lovers of open world FPS, you won't be disappointed "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead" - Nelson Mandela
Keyrock Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) i have never heard of x3, but that description sounds really fun to me If you're into space sims then you'll likely like it. It's made by German developer Egosoft. The X Series is my favorite modern space sim. Other games, like Freelancer, have done combat better, but I'm big into trading economy, and the X Series does that quite well. You can build and own factories, multiplex them, trade, etc. The dynamic supply & demand based economy is quite good. You can own any type of ship, from small scouts, to heavy fighters, to massive capital ships, like carriers and destroyers. While the games do have a "campaign" to play through, the meat of the games is always just doing your own thing in a MASSIVE galaxy sandbox. You can do pretty much whatever you want: Be a pirate and prey on merchants, be a defender and hunt down pirates and aggressors, be a merchant and set up a huge trading empire spanning numerous sectors (that's my bag), lead massive fleets and conquer whole sectors through military might. Words of warning: * Cringeworthy voice acting * STEEP learning curve * Be prepared to lose hundreds of hours of your life If you plan to jump into the series, then I recommend you go with one of the X3 games, I would suggest Terran Conflict (I have yet to play Albion Prelude). The campaigns are mostly throw away in the games and the X3 games are simply superior to X or X2. entrerix Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 hmm, i mostly am just looking for a game thats a mix between tie fighter and an rpg (ie gain money to buy better ships/equipment) still, sounds like i might find a lot to enjoy in X3, gonna check that out this weekend or something (its quite affordable on steam) Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. Rosbjerg Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 X3 is pretty awesome, but it's best to have like a week off when you start if you haven't tried it yet you might enjoy Darkstar One - it's not the best game you'll ever play, but it's decent enough.. and it's a spacesim / rpg. 2 Fortune favors the bald.
Lexx Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I played X3 for a batzillion hours. Good game, but very time consuming, imo. "only when you no-life you can exist forever, because what does not live cannot die."
alanschu Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 X2 grabbed me more than X3 did, for some reason. Couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Enoch Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I'm not playing anything, because all I want to play is Project Eternity, and I can't. Yeah, I'm getting the itch to play an old-school-ish RPG, but I'm not feeling particularly inspired by any of the options in front of me. (Or, at least, I am sufficiently deterred by the prospect of getting them running, patched, and sufficiently modded.) When is Wasteland 2 supposed to be hitting the streets? (I didn't back it, so I'm not getting the updates, but the cash I threw at Eternity was apparently enough to merit a free copy.)

HoonDing Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 if you haven't tried it yet you might enjoy Darkstar One - it's not the best game you'll ever play, but it's decent enough.. and it's a spacesim / rpg. That game gets really repetitive after a few hours, and the main storyline is laughably bad. I call it Oblivion in Space. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

Amentep Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I just finished XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Pretty fun I thought (but having never played the previous X-COM games including the one this is a remake of, you can take my opinion with a grain of salt). 1 I cannot - yet I must. Gorgon Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I briefly thought about reinstalling New Vegas but I realised I have already done all there is to do. Yeah I'd like to find a classic RPG I haven't played as well. So many games are just **** nowadays. That, and I'm an old grumpy bastard who doesn't like change. Drowsy Emperor Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 (edited) I got my girlfriend to play Torment. I pimped up the GOG version with all the tweaks, widescreen and UI mods. The game looks better than ever. Honestly, I think the graphics kick ass especially in terms of design. I particularly like the zoom level. I'm not too thrilled about Project Eternity's zoom level, the closest one is still too far to get really distinct characters. I didn't mind it in BG or ID back in the day, but I think Torment pulled it off better. I hope this kickstarter crap succeeds enough so we get about two dozen games - that way there will be at least one or two worth keeping. Tale Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Kingdoms of Amalur. About 56 hours in this playthrough and I still haven't crossed the strait to Mel Anshir or entered Detyre at all or done either of the DLCs. I suspect this will be about 100 hours to finish. One I hit the level cap, I'll switch from universalist to sorcery focus though, and will likely go much faster. Universalist really drags behind the higher your level. Fascinating isn't it? A game that has been critisized for being way too short can still offer a 100 hours playthrough. I noticed the other day that my playtrhough as about 120 hours. I had the most fun as a backstabby dagger person. Who accused it of being short? Most discussion I've seen has called it boring, generic, or forgettable. Maybe that's my own bias, as it simply got repetitive for me and lost motivation. I love the concepts it has, but... just ran out of steam after about 30 hours. if you haven't tried it yet you might enjoy Darkstar One - it's not the best game you'll ever play, but it's decent enough.. and it's a spacesim / rpg. That game gets really repetitive after a few hours, and the main storyline is laughably bad. I call it Oblivion in Space. Is it anything like the demo? The one thing I remember is that you're fighting level 1 enemies, then the second you hit level 2, everything gets a massive upgrade and becomes harder. And that's why I never played more than the demo. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Amentep Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 (edited) Yeah, my biggest problem with Kingdoms of Amalaur was that I didn't ever care about what I was doing. I just felt disconnected. I think I played about 20 hours before I just kinda...stopped playing it. I was doing a bunch of quests, and I was leveling up but I really couldn't say I was having fun. EDIT: That's not to say it wasn't well made. it was. But for whatever reason I just never connected with what was going on with the game. Edited April 11, 2013 by Amentep 1 I cannot - yet I must. EDIT: That's not to say it wasn't well made. it was. But for whatever reason I just never connected with what was going on with the game. You pretty much nutshelled how I feel about KoA. Sold my Sabre M4 (light fighter) in X3: Terran Conflict and scooped up a Terran Baldric TS (transport). I went with the Baldric over a Boron Dolphin or Teladi Vulture for two reasons: 1) I'm at the very start and since I've been doing missions exclusively for the Terrans I don't have a high enough reputation to buy transports from anyone else at the moment. 2) The Baldric is overall the best ship in its class. The OTAS Mistral and Split Caiman are the only ships faster, and only the Boron Dolphin has more cargo room. The Baldric has the best balance of cargo room, speed, maneuverability, and shielding. It was expensive, though. This leaves me without a true fighter for the time being, I have a couple of M5 scouts, but those don't really count. My next (storyline) mission is an escort mission, so I'll put that off for a good while. In the meantime I'll start trading until I can afford to build a station, likely an Ore Mine, and really get my trading empire going. Eventually I'll go back to the escort mission (homeslice can sit there for weeks in space waiting for me) in a shiny and pimped out M3 heavy fighter. Once I have an M3, I generally feel good about showing any would be aggressors what's up. Malcador Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Lords of Football. Interesting concept, kind of dull to play. User interface is a bit wonky in terms of getting data on players.
