Nepenthe
Also, splurged a bit on a nicer suit, actually quite enjoying wearing one now. Wish I lived in one of those countries where lawyers are actually overpaid so I could get some tailored. You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that? AGX-17
Its my second to last day of this technical conference I have been attending in Vegas. As usual its been amazing. Really interesting seminars, excellent entertainment, delicious food, beautiful women, professional staff and the hedonistic lifestyle of Vegas all make this trip yet another unforgettable experience My sister went to Vegas over the weekend. The pictures she's been posting on facebook have been nauseating. I'm one of those people who always tells House that I prefer the wasteland. I love cities, but Vegas is a caricature with no natural right to exist.

Malcador
Not much point with the cliques here, and the married guys talking about their wives and kids isn't that interesting anyway. Raithe
Have a form of working weekend coming up, a semi-casual discussion on work, company, personal aims, and some networking. Based around the idea of "get folks who have spent more time emailing each other and talking across the phone rather then in direct personal contact together" and with a game plan of "roughly sketch out time tables, then do some work stuff together and have a beer, then some more work and discussion, and some more beer, then a dinner with outside company contacts and more booze". So that should be somewhat interesting. But it's being an oddly paaced evening feeling right now. Organised things for my mother, so all her meds are prepped and assorted things are handled while I'm gone. I finished my replay of New Vegas yesterday, and finished a book I was reading earlier. Wrapped up a short crash presentation preperation on combating graffiti for a potential work pitch... Have that slightly disconnected feeling and not sure what to do. Not in the right mood to start a game, can't really get a frame of mind to figure out fresh reading, Nothing jumping out as a "this needs to be done now", and my mind keeps having odd wistful half-memories of an old girlfriends voice. Just very... ungrounded in anything in my life right at this moment sensation. "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."

Cantousent
I've lived within 300 miles of Las Vegas for the vast majority of my life. I was born in the City and lived there many years. There's a lot more to the city than any tourist could ever see from the outside. Having said that, I don't feel a particular need to flame people about it. I don't intend to return to Las Vegas/Henderson any time. If home is where the heart is, then hell is certainly any place my family resides. Still, I miss the desert, the basin, and the ring of mountains from time to time. The Strip is certainly something to see, but I'm like Bruce. I visited infrequently, but I didn't live there and never wanted to live there. In fact, I haven't been to the Strip just to visit in years. Hell, I don't even tend to gamble, although I will plop quarters infrequently in a machine and get free drinks for it from time to time. ...Or at least I did years ago when I had business to attend on the Strip. Otherwise, no dice. Anyhow, I'm getting ready to fire up another New Vegas run, but I'm thinking about starting a new game instead. Come 7pm, I'll open up a bottle of... whatever... chard or cab probably, and start drinking. Maybe I'll do something I should do more often and pop open a cab and let it breath while I drink the chard. Of course, does it really matter if I've decanted the cab if I've had a bottle of chardonnay already? So, New Vegas, wine, and maybe some tv with the wife. 1 Fionavar's Holliday Wishes to all members of our online community: Happy Holidays Join the revelry at the Obsidian Plays channel:Obsidian Plays Remembering tarna, Phosphor, Metadigital, and Visceris. Hurlshort
I had a weird dream where mt wife was getting married to some really old guy. I was with my ex-girlfriend at the time. I ended up telling the ex it wasn't going to work and then I sped off to break up the wedding. So yay for my subconscious Speaking of Vegas, I also registered to play in a hockey tournament out there in March. It should be fun, I didn't like Vegas either until I started playing hockey there. Walking through a casino with a bag of gear and hockey sticks is pretty fun.

Starwars
Spent most of the day in weird denial that I'll be working the night shift all weekend. Feeling a bit whiny overall to tell the truth since, well... It's just not that bad really to work a few nights, I mean come on! But oh my god, I've found it really isn't for me. LadyCrimson
Still trying to wake up. Might have to increase my caffeine for the day this time. *yawn* Trying to figure out how and where to start my novel. This attempt has been my most fulfilling one. I'm comfortable with my characters, plots, developments, everything except this. During my one major attempt at novel writing, ages ago, I had a similar problem. I had plot outline, chapter outline, historical timeline, even drew a rough map and so on, but I kept changing how the first chapter went, which would affect other things a bit of course. It drove me crazy. “Things are as they are. Tale
I'm mostly stuck trying to figure out how to make the first chapter interesting. You have to get your hook out there, otherwise both publishers and readers won't bother with the rest. I feel I may have backloaded mine a bit. And I'm wary about using in media res. I'm thinking a lot about how other novels do it. Pratchett hooks people with the humor that just pervades the entire thing. So he can pretty much start anywhere. As could Douglas Adams. George R. R. Martin starts Game of Thrones off by basically lying to the reader, introducing the "Others" who aren't anywhere else in the bleeding 1st book. I don't think I want to do that. I guess I should summarize what my overall tone and hook are going to be and build something that represents that. Ooh, maybe as an impetus for the more boring intro I was avoiding. Don't avoid it, just push that to Chapter 2 and make Chapter 1 something interesting that would cause it. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater." Nepenthe
Thanks for the comments, guys. We established long ago that she loved two men and had to pick one, I came second. I know it wasn't exactly easy on her, but I'd still prefer being in her position than in mine - namely loving two women and not getting either one of them. ;P You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Cantousent
Oregon is a beautiful state, both the coast and the high desert. I've lived in several states and been to at least 35 of them. Of course, I fancy my native Nevada to any of them. :Cant's **** eating grin icon: Anyhow, the wife is attending a wedding tonight and I didn't go so I stopped by the store to pick up some sour dough rolls. I started some St. Louis style ribs in the crock pot this morning, so I plan on pulled pork sandwhiches and cole slaw. I normally wouldn't drink tonight, but I'm home alone, so I also picked up some sake and a bottle of zinfandel. I plan on having the sake on the rocks, and I rarely dirnk it, so I'll have it first so I can actually taste it. mmm MMM MMMMM Fionavar's Holliday Wishes to all members of our online community: Happy Holidays Join the revelry at the Obsidian Plays channel:Obsidian Plays Remembering tarna, Phosphor, Metadigital, and Visceris.
