Which is good, because Sentinel was one of the weaker (imo) classes in ME 1, and they seem to have given it some love.

What did you think was so weak about the Sentinel in ME1? The only downside was the lack of weapon talent, but that wasn't an issue on anything except your first run. I always found the combination of tech and biotics made for a damn tough Shepard.

Mass Effect 2 Preview: First Hour of Gameplay

What's immediately clear is that Shepard dies within the first five minutes. From what (either lack of air, the cold of space or burning on his descent planetward) we don't know, but later on in a conversation with Mass Effect: Galaxy's Jacob Taylor, it's revealed that Shepard was found on the planet as nothing but pieces of burnt flesh, scattered over a large area.

So much better than the first one's intro.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

Soldier all the way here. That quirky biotic & engineering stuff is why you let the hawt Asari & Quarians tag along.

They needed an excuse to reset your character level and let you change classes, and while I'm fine with

killing you off and resurrecting you

, it does seem kinda silly that that they can do this with just

chunks of burnt flesh

.

Whatever, I'm really really looking forward to this game.

Ahem...it seems that due to unforeseen tactical circumstances I will have to revise my class selection to the Soldier. Note, my decision is in no way related to the rumored side-effects of gratuitous b00bies, no matter how voluptuous they may appear.

I'll point out that Vanguards can work in that role quite well, too. They could in 1, and going from the non-trailer trailer, they will still in 2. Unless there's some soldier-boob thing I am completely unaware of :o

If you mean to say "Maria, your post was confusing. The regular autosaves can be rewritten and the end-game save is special, but you made it sound like the same thing," then I agree.

I don't think it was confusing, more like overly succinct to the point that it might have lead to the problems I described in my later post. But yeah, I think we're on the same page, here :)

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Yes, Soldier-Boob is one of their unique abilities. Didn't you find it suspicious that no other conspicuous special ability was mentioned? Sentinels have Tech Armor, Vanguards have Charge, Engineers have Combat Drone, Infiltrators have Cloak...and Soldiers have Implant, a highly advanced mass effect powered implant that can be toggled to enhance either boobs, hips, legs or ass.

However, you're right. I'm switching to Vanguard 'cause that Charge ability is immense. I'll be able to kill through walls Perfect Dark style! Not to mention that Shockwave is the Mass Effect version of Fireball.

I kind of get the vibe that Shephards body was more then just "chunks of burnt flesh" .. and that Cerberus have been using funky tech inside him.. "we shall rebuild him better, stronger, faster" as part of a process of returning him to life..

But it's giving me this whole..

"they're doing to Shephard what a certain Reaper did to Saren..."

almost like if something crops up later they're going to be able to hit a few buttons and shut down that tech.. or do a remote takeover....

:) Maybe thats my cultivated paranoia running rampant tho...

That's probably why the hot brunette Cerberus girl is sent along. She holds the remote control.

Heh, was David Cage hired as a writer or something?

A hot brunette's never needed a remote controller to make me do what she wants.

RPGFan: In Mass Effect 1, each character had a pretty solid list of skills, like ten or twelve each. It seems to have slimmed down - six for Shepard and then four for the other characters. Does that make the game less deep, or what was the choice behind slimming down the skill list?

CH: Well, I think part of it is that the classes are more specialized, and the depth comes into applying the different characters. Each character actually comes with a different set of powers. So you'll get a certain character because they'll do certain things. So whereas Mass Effect 1 had more generic systems, Mass Effect 2 is more specialized - so I think that the same amount of choices are still there. Before, you would have a character with a list of powers, and a character of the same class with the same list of powers; now you are able to look at two different characters with different powers. You can then specialize this character this way and that character that way, and you can decide who you want to take with you.

I find this interesting. Squadmates have their own, specific classes with powers and abilities Shep and other squadmates don't have. In ME 1, my soldier always took Liara and Tali because that meant I had all my bases covered. I wonder if this will help me break the habit of grabbing on to a specific team and using it for 90% of the game.

even if the interviewer is a moron it don't mean that his info is worthless. is the reason why Gromnir bothers to read your posts in spite of your... handicap.

as for the topic at hand, Gromnir don't like the notion o' the pc only having access to 6 skills... unless there is Far fewer skill points available in the pool. choice o' class becomes more important? how is that good? is a level 1 decision in a 40 hour game. now, because o' the ridiculous number o' skill points available to me-1 characters you end up with same result by an alternative route: all characters of same class end up looking pretty much identical. if you are able to max virtual every skill, then it don't matter if you got 6 skills or 60. everybody looks similar and character development choices after level-up become less meaningful... is the reason we hated original d&d... once you roll attributes and choose class you pretty much end choice.

Weapon talents are gone, so player skill = PC skill. Charm and Intimidate are gone. Your conversation options seem to be based on paragon/renegade points and general class still. For example, putting points into the Soldier's 'Combat Mastery' skill increases your speechcraft.

It also seems they're doing what they did with Shale in Dragon Age: Origins.

Cerberus Network is an in game service available when you register with an EA account. Once enrolled you will have access to exclusive in game content and updates via an in game feed. An exclusive character will be available from day one and shortly followed by new weapons, worlds, etc.

So more day one DLC? What's the excuse this time?

It's available to everyone who buys a new copy of the game. I assume it's the same line of reasoning: to get people to hook up to the BSN and to get money from people who buy the game used.

Like Dragon Age, ME 2 only uses a disk check. It might be an anti-piracy measure, but I don't see it as being any more useful than DA:O's DLC in that regards.

Since the Cerberus Network is apparently going to provide a steady dribble of new stuff in addition to the initial burst, it might work better. Looks like they're testing the applications at the moment.

I think it's a brilliant idea, no excuses needed.

Unreal has always been very moddable, all they would really have to do is to enable you to start UnrealED with a simple "-editor" in the command line. They might be using specialised tools and so on, but youd still be able to do things like new textures and so on. I think the "no mods" thing is a pure bussiness decision because they dont want the hassle of supporting a mod community.

It's simply not a design goal for ME series. People should just suck it up, and move on. Just like it wasn't for BG series, KOTOR, or JE. it was for NWN, and very limitedly, with DA.

I thought Shepard died from asphyxiation when his life support systems gave out and he/she was drifting in space, hence the gasping and wheezing noises in one of those trailers.

So instead of burned chunks of flesh, maybe they needed to re-build his brain/central nervous system.
