Deraldin Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I only managed a 16.8% on that little test. I've seen bits and pieces of a lot of those movies, but I haven't actually seen many of them in the entirety.
Pidesco Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I got back on the old movie horse over the last few days: Les 400 Coups La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc Meshes of the Afternoon L'Atalante Suprisingly, La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc was the highlight of the viewings. It was absolutely riveting, and it took me completely by surprise. Easily the best film I've seen this year. Theseus Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 STALKER Extremely slow paced, not enough effects to warrant why the hell the characters are so cautious, other then that they may be schizophrenic. Story and characters were underdeveloped. I dont recommend this film. "This science fiction milestone from director Andrei Tarkovsky takes you into the Zone, a mysterious, guarded realm containing a mystical room in which occupants' secret dreams come true. Stalker, a man able to lead others to this holy grail, escorts a writer and a scientist through this foreboding territory and confronts several unexpected challenges along the way. Based on the Russian sci-fi novel Roadside Picnic."

Hurlshort Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The Pixar plague? The evil CGI cartoons spreading across the world, man! They must be stopped! I agree. That's really sad. I'm guessing you both also hate Disney.
theslug Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I got a 30% but that list is trash. Half the movies were made when my gramps was probably around my age. Horrible. There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time. I am no closer to finding the answer, however, it has become apparent that contentment is certainly a realizable goal. I find these results to be adequate, if not pleasing. julianw Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 28.4%. All those anime and pixar movies got me that far... I probably heard of 50% of them though.
Laozi Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 77.6% I was more hurt by not seeing movies like Memento and WALL-E and the Bourne and Pirates movie series. Having a mother that is an old movie buff and a father who is bigtime into westerns and war movies helps alot. I always wished I had taken a film class or two in college but at the time was more into learning cinematography then history anyway. Watched Blade Runner: The Final Cut. I got this last christmas but never took the time to watch the Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner until today. Always interesting to hear how a film like this comes about and how pleased Philip K. was when he saw the special effects. I liked hearing from the writer of the original screenplay and the members of the Art Department. Interesting that Guillermo del Toro really liked the original voice over narrative, most people seem to have disdain for it as evident in it being cut out in the "Final Cut". People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. What they don't understand is, I mean a jellyfish with long, blond hair.
kirottu Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The Day the Earth Stood Still Modern Hollywood movie: high production values, but nothing really worth mentioning. This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.
Kor Qel Droma Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I scored a meager 51.4%. Some of those old movies are just too...old for me. I've been trying to watch Event Horizon again, but can't seem to stay awake long enough. A friend ripped me a copy of Gran Torino. I hope I can stay awake long enough to watch that. Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
theslug Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The Fall. The movie is similar to Pan's Labyrinth in that it centers around a young girl and fantasy story telling. The fantasy elements, style, and real world setting were interesting but I just don't know. It seemed like it was lacking something. Either way I give The Fall an 8.249 out of 10. SteveThaiBinh Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 26.4%, which is good, because it reminds me there are a lot of great films out there that I still haven't seen and can look forward to. "An electric puddle is not what I need right now." (Nina Kalenkov)
theslug Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Rough Cut (also known as A Film is a Film?!!?) This was another Korean film and it was pretty good. The plot is pretty simple, first you got Soo Ta who is a prideful bastard of an actor who regularly gets in all sorts of trouble. After punching out the actor playing opposite him in his latest gangster film, production is stopped and no one will fill the role. Soo Ta takes matters into his own hands and recruits a real gangster after one chance encounter, Gang Pae who is #2 in his organization (some kind of twist on gang ster or something...), under one condition: That the film be as realistic as possible, which includes the various fight scenes and what not throughout. I gotta say one thing that really surprised me about this film was the music. They threw in some crazy jazz in a few parts that some how actually fit and it was pretty neat. The fighting, premise, development, and characters as well as the overall film were quite enjoyable however some of the subplots were a little unnecessary, confusing, or just plain wtf? It was like you have these main cast of characters you're getting into and then all the sudden a minor character steps in and completely steals the story for their 15 minutes. It just kind of took away from the pacing but w/e it didn't ruin the movie or anything. However the thing that really annoyed me was the ending. I mean I thought we had an ending and I would have been cool with it even if they let the loose string dangle but nope they had to get to that string and beat it to death in an alley with an antique Buddha. I wish they would have just been more discreet and everyone could have lived happily ever after. :'( I give Rough Cut an 8.975 non half real rape scene in a movie inside of a movie out of 10. theslug Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Tropic Thunder I seem to recall this movie having a lower rt rating than it actually has so going into the movie I didn't have any real expectations but I was very pleasantly surprised with how funny and well acted the film was. I will admit it had the silliness that is present in most Ben Stiller films but that's also kind of his charm and I ended up really enjoying the film, I mean it was actually really funny. I thought it did an excellent job capturing Hollywood and parodying a lot of what is wrong with the business (not that I'd know but I'm sure Stiller does) and the cast really did an awesome job doing what they needed to do. Cruise plays a character like once a decade that is complete magic and we had a serious glance of it here. Reminded me of his performance in Magnolia and it was awesome. Besides some odd musical choices and Cruise dancing at the end I have to say the film was pretty good. Probably the best comedy I've seen of '08 and in the top 5 movies I've seen this year. I'm actually tempted to watch it again tomorrow. I give Tropic Thunder a gracious 938.999~ out of 1000. Often over the top, sometimes too much, but a damn fine comedy. Kor Qel Droma Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Gran Torino. I have to say, without a doubt, that this movie was not at all what I expected it to be. I figured Clint Eastwood would kick ass all over the place. Instead, we see the old fart teaching a young man lessons of life, albeit in a totally racist and old fashioned way. That being said, I wholeheartedly recommend this movie. Sure, some of the supporting cast doesn't know how to act, but it doesn't detract from the message this movie tries to get across. And that, basically, is, you can't go through life being a ****. Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
taks Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 you don't mess with the zohan. well, talk about your strange movies. all in all it was worth the rental price ($4.99), but in general, it was a pretty dumb movie. there were some scenes that were absolutely hysterical and through most of it we (my wife and i) were chuckling a bit. waaaay too much focus on sex, but it was sort of indirect, which kinda made it a bad one for my 5-year old (mostly because he couldn't understand the jokes). taks comrade taks... just because.

Tigranes Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Hrm. Does anyone have an idea for a flick I could send my parents to for Christmas? Looked around and I might have to settle for that new Button film. It makes me uneasy that Brad Pitt is in it, but the early bits with the old kid looked pretty nice. I assume not many have seen it yet, though, being unreleased. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Anyone seen ''Get Smart''? "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. LadyCrimson Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Anyone seen ''Get Smart''? Yeah, we saw that not too long ago. It has a few almost-belly laughs, and is overall a cute movie, but it's not as funny as one might hope. But it's silly-entertaining. Got around to taking that Film Addict "test." Result was 55.6% Which surprised me since I don't tend to like sitting through most 30's-50's classics - the style of acting in those days grates on me. But I guess I saw a lot more of them than I thought I did when I was younger/forced to when I was kid, or something. I've seen a lot of the 60's/70's/80's films (and all Alfred Hitch**** movies, apparently). Like others, there's quite a few on that list I've seen bits and parts of, but not all in one sitting, so I had to say "no" on those. “Things are as they are.
