a) We got more Ydwin content in Beast of Winter, if they were going to upgrade her to full companion status that would have been a logical point for Obsidian to do it - they did not.

 

b) Josh Sawyer recently made it clear that upgrading sidekicks to companions is to resource intensive to be done willy-nilly.

 

c) Ydwin was an incentive for a stretch-goal that wasn't hit. This is a more esoteric point, but I feel that if a stretch-goal isn't hit, then the incentive shouldn't be implemented - after all if we knew the incentive was going to be implemented anyways, then there will be less hype about hitting the goal.

 

d) Having almost completed Beast of Winter I can say that I have taken a dislike to her personality, so I am happy they didn't spend time or money on her. This is of course a matter of taste and you are free disagree.

As an aside I was under the impression that adding in companions after the fact can be a bit of minefield. What I mean, specifically is that Ydwin doesn't have all the tie ins that all the other actual companions do. Flags etc and by upgrading Ydwin to a full companion you'd have to do a ton of work to do. Unless a forum member wants to be a wealthy donor I don't see how that's at all feasible.

 

I may be mistaken (That is to say misremembering.) but I recall a Bioware dev some years ago discussing that it was actually impossible in some instances to implement new companions who weren't already in a batch of code. Something about functionality with variables and the like. But I'm not sure if that was something inherent in Mass Effect's engine (Unreal) or if it was a complex coding issue. I won't claim any authority over this subject it's just a tidbit that's bubbled to the top of my accursed brain. I don't have any clue if Unity functions differently!

Nope you are correct, but I think a couple things are worth mentioning.

 

1: She is easily the most popular sidekick. 

2: She is already in the game as a sidekick and all her combat barks are already done.  She would need to be added to the reputation system, maybe given a few more quest interjections, given some personal conversations beyond what she has on recruitment, and a personal quest.  The rest is complete.  That's a lot to do yeah, but it isn't the entire work load either.

 

That said I am curious what leak is getting baited here?  I heard Konstanten was actually the sidekick getting a little love in the next expansion?  Considering the name of the third expansion I will be shocked if Fessina doesn't get some involvement there as well.

Apparenly he's getting more love in the Seeker Slayer Survivor DLC :) (along the lines of Ydwin in BoW increased wordiness)
