Kentucky County Clerk still Refuses to issue Gay Marriage License
Amentep replied to BruceVC's topic in Way Off-Topic
Er...to be fair, if God exists (and prohibits something) then surely His authority would actually be more important and relevant than any state or federal authority? -
I need to get back on Bravely Default. It is very classic FF in its way, but I keep getting distracted by other games, reading, television, life in general, etc. As someone who played every game up to X, I've been rather uninterested in the direction the series took. I look at each new iteration in the hopes that it'll be something I'm interested in but so far...its not.

I'm sure they didn't put it in on a whim; I disagree with the professor putting it in the syllabus at all though. Absolute prohibitions don't leave room for context and, IMO, that isn't a good thing. The professor runs the risk of appearing hypocritical if they try to address historical perspectives and they use something that uses the very prohibited language that they've called out in the syllabus. Proscriptive syllabi are fine provided the absolutes are maintainable, but most absolutes are not.

Kickstarter is live: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/723609774/hawk-the-hunter I know Hawk the Slayer used to be a favorite of P&P RPG players; hopefully there's enough of them around to garner the necessary amount on the project.

I recommend watching all 6 videos; it was a fairly interesting debate. From what I could tell the arguments boiled down to - Pro: Offensive ideas challenge social norms; for social development to happen in positive ways, all social norms must be challenged whether we're happy with the challenge or not. Con: Offensive ideas can lead to offensive (criminal, horrendous) action, therefore the free expression of offensive ideas have to be built with no protection for offensive speech that leads to offensive action. The con side kind of fell down because while they present a justification for limiting free speech (stopping inciting words), they don't make the necessary connection - to my mind - of how the offensive speech automatically creates offensive action. As the third pro-commenter, Shami Chakrabarti, mentioned that approach is akin to victim blaming (its Charlie Hebdo's fault they got killed because they were offensive). They're also vague on who determines intent and it basically seemed like their criteria was "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist". Bans devoid of context are problematic. For example the ban on the use of the term "colored people" means discussing the NAACP is now verboten. It also prevents discussing gender in animals & pets (you don't have a woman or man dog); in fact the ban on male and female actually might make it more difficult to discuss transgenderism since gender is male/female not man/woman. And it also prevents discussing a whole lot of stuff within its historical context, or to discuss offensive things that use those terms. Not all of that may be within the scope of the Women's Studies course, but it points to the problem of arbitrary limitations which are devoid of the ability to consider context.

I'm not familiar with the Boo Kings, but they must be scary indeed.

HAWK THE HUNTER - Terry Marcel is going to open a kickstarter on August 30th for a follow-up to 1980's HAWK THE SLAYER, a cult favorite sword & sorcery film. http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/jul/06/hawk-the-slayer-film-sequel-terry-marcel-jack-palance They have some funding for the film, but need some more to have the budget where they want it, and are going to try kickstarter. Looking forward to the kickstarter when it opens.

Flamethrowers for sale (check your state laws first)

If you flamebroil him, does that make him the Burger King? -
I didn't say it couldn't change. Right now, however, it's just the way it is and it's been steadily getting worse over the last ten years. It's going to take a major paradigm shift to change that and I don't see that happening any time soon. Certainly not within the next ten years. In my opinion it really hasn't been getting worse. The same kind of stuff that's happening now was happening in the early 1990s. What has happened is that more people have gotten online and with more public ways to cause and address issues it has led to a larger number of the same problems. I suspect (and would cheerfully admit I'm wrong if someone has data to disabuse me of the notion) that the percentage (people affected vs total population) hasn't actually changed though.

Who would care if it did (assuming that there's no way the creator would change their intent based on a petition)?

Funny...whereas people from Pixar movies are the ones that look weird and inhuman to me, and the designs of characters from Tangled and Frozen seem much more agreeable. That Disney Infinity shot of Anna is extra special weird, though, I'll agree with you that much. In the world of Disney Infinity, its the toy that is in the game. So you're not playing Anna from Frozen, you're playing a Toy of Anna from Frozen. That also allows them to create the toys so they fit together visually or else the thing would be all over the map - Pixar, Disney 2d, Disney 3D, Disney Live action (Pirates of the Carribean), Marvel Animation (Spider-Man), Marvel Live Action (Avengers, GotG) and now Star Wars (animation and live action).

I'm playing through DAI DLC "THE DESCENT" right now. While I agree with SadExchange its weird the loot is all geared towards high end despite being able to get to the area much earlier (I guess they are assuming you've already done the other expansion? I haven't yet), so far I haven't a problem with the DLC (and the schematics have given me some pretty powerful crafted items without worrying about the level on the stuff I'm finding). Combat is a lot harder, even with some solid equipment I'm not blasting through enemies or anything. There does seem to be a few points with enemies that will respawn until you defeat a specific darkspawn, which makes getting mobbed pretty easy and provides a different challenge in combat (but not an unreasonable one; I think it approximates the idea of a darkspawn horde laying around in the deep roads pretty well). I imagine ones enjoyment of it will be based on how much you've liked any of the deep roads stuff in previous games. Thankfully I've played through the game before so the fact I'm probably going to come out of this overpowered isn't really a big issue for me.

Do they have traffic reporters on a Super Star Destroyer? -
Yeah I doubt there really is a True Neutral.

But my point is, its not even handed and in several cases its factually wrong so seems weird to call neutral.

I was mostly meaning that for some time (IMO) the Bio boards haven't seemed like they wanted to be a community. So I'm surprised they didn't toast the off-topic forum much, much earlier

I'm not sure why you'd count the "Wired" article as neutral...? As I understand it, there was a woman who helped run Sad Puppies who is ignored in the article so they make the accusation Sad Puppies (which they don't distinguish from Rabid Puppies) is all about white guys fighting women and minorities. But further, this little paragraph is lovely: I won't address the first two points as those with opinions will already think one way or the other about those bits, but I want to address the last line - it is wrong. Thor wasn't replaced by a frog, he was cursed to BE a frog. And people did complain, you only have to go back to the letters pages of the time to see that. They also complained when he was replaced (briefly) by Beta Ray Bill, complained when he was replaced by Thunderstrike, etc. The idea that the complaints now are some sort of "well its because he was replaced by a woman!" is ridiculous, it really is what the writer suggests it isn't - there are certain fans who'll hate any change.

To be honest, I'm surprised this didn't happen earlier. Also - and this is just me - most forums I've experienced that don't have some form of off-topic, even if a heavily limited one, don't exist long.

Yes just to add something, she wasn't a stripper. And you right ...what she did say about her weight was basically how she use to be overweight and clearly this was something she had struggled with Of course she only mentioned that after I said what I said so I had no idea In the long run, its probably better to get it out now than to have you two fall in love and then out of love later on. Or whatever.

It seems an odd thing to bring up with a new acquaintance, I'll agree.

Peeper (1976) dir Peter Hyams, written by W. D. Richter, staring Michael Caine and Natalie Wood The 70s saw a lot of revival of period crime films (Chinatown on the serious side, Murder By Death on the comedy side); this one falls in the middle. Clearly playing with the tropes of the hard-boiled detective, Caine plays a down-on-his-luck gumshoe that gets tumbled upon a case that leads to blackmail, murder, etc. The movie takes the narration of the detective genre and treats it as a stand-up comedy monologue, winking at the audience. But it also takes the detective story seriously (unlike MbD, which mocks it) and has a legit mystery story. Its uneven and certainly has parts that are better than its whole, but not unworth watching.

Not Stephanie Powers' or Tallulah Bankhead's finest hour (and a half). That said, Donald Sutherland has been in worse films. Attractions come in many forms; but I don't think that the woman in questions sprung an immature trap (necessarily) so much as - is true with most people who have struggled with weight - she was trying to find out if her lifelong struggles with her weight would be an issue if they pursued a relationship.

I wondered if they met on an online dating site; its not specified in the article that I could tell.

Any meetup based on online contact is dangerous, you only need to look up the thefts and murders that happen around craigslist deals to know that. Not sure how that related to a widower being murdered by a stripper when neither linked article indicated they met online...?

But to not approve of moral choices people make doesn't have anything to do with it with being your business For example someone who hits his wife isn't really your business but you wouldn't approve right ? This is just about your opinion I never made a statement about morality or physical violence. "Cheating" isn't an area that I think is relevant to anyone concerned but those in relationships with those involved and the legal system (if needed) and any deities that might exist and/or care about that sort of thing.
