Star Wars Episode 7 Thread
I admit, that's one of the things that I disliked when I was toy collecting. It was really bad at the time; when I went to stores I'd look in between the shelving because typically some fan had stashed the rarest figures there in the hopes that no one would find them and buy them, so they could later when they had more money... ...usually so they could sell them at ridiculous "hot" prices on ebay. That's not even getting into the "I know a guy who works at the store" stuff.

The Latest Reading Thread
I never read one of the books with them, but when I read about them in some of the RPG materials the Yuuzhan Vong seemed to me like "we've ran out of ideas" villains. Like, unable to create a credible bad-guy for our heroic force users to face, the writers just said - "Ooo, yeah lets make a race that isn't completely affected by the force". That said, the only book I ever read was SPINTER IN THE MIND'S EYE, so my knowledge of the quality of the books themselves is pretty thin.

What are you playing now?
Mage is the best class, IMO. It also fits the best with the story, again IMO. A distant second for me is a bow wielding rogue, mainly because some of the abilities are pretty fun to use. Duel-wielding daggers rogue sucks, IMO. Sword and shield warriors are great tanks who just use guard and never fall. One handed warriors are sort of like duel-wielding rogues: they suck. I think mage is the best class but also enjoyed the bow and dual wielding rogue both. Dual wielding became more fun when adding the specialization. I think part of the problem (IMO) with the fighter classes is that there is, ultimately, so little utility for them. They have a specific role and they do that role and little else. There's a bit more versatality with the other classes. This of course makes dwarves a bit duff, IMO, as they can't be mages, so half their classes are kinda dull. I'm nearing, I think, the end of Jaws of Hakkon. I think I liked The Descent better, but I like the Deep Roads stuff a good bit in previous games. I just found duel-wielding rogues to be too easily killed, yet not delivering that much extra damage (relatively speaking) to have them along in place of a warrior as a melee option. I found that having two warriors act as shields and damage sponges up front, with two ranged attackers (usually a mage and an archer rogue) worked best in most combat encounters, and particularly well versus the tougher bosses. That's why I rarely had Cole in my party. Very early on they were weak - first time through I stopped playing and went for another character. I kept getting killed by heat seeking bears. But there's a tipping point where they go from weak to pretty useful, usually with use of stealth and skills and trying to second target whoever the tanks were fighting (and it seems you find a lot of good daggers early on). Once I got to specialization I took Tempest. Flask of Ice - any one who hits gets Ice Damage, Flask of Fire - abilities cost no stamina and opponents get knocked away when they try and hit. Flask of Lightning - only PC moves for a short period of time. I was pretty much unstoppable at that point, using flasks and stealth to get in and out in the most damaging ways.

Kentucky County Clerk still Refuses to issue Gay Marriage License
Yeah, I actually find this internet disparaging of Davis through social media and memes to be in bad taste. I disagree with her and believe she should face the consequences of her (in)action, but this is still bullying. It will pass, the same sex marriage bill has global ramifications and is something that has ended decades of discrimination against the LGBT community.....it really was historical and important for the USA Davis decided to try to undermine this because she is a bigot and played the religious card to increase sympathy ...she deserves this " bullying " Nobody really deserves bullying, IMO. That said I'm not sure what she's getting is "bullying" so much as "public scorn". I suppose from her perspective it might feel like bullying, so I guess the situations a bit hazy.

I'm sorry, but IMO if you think a statement of opinion as benign as Adler's is "offensive" your "offensive meter" might be too sensitive. You also seem to think the statement is some sort of broad statement about Linux being "bad" as you subsequently spend much effort defending why it is "good". But it isn't a statement about Linux being good or bad. You also claim to be "not for censorship", but want the company to squash an employee's opinion because you don't like it which kind of is the opposite of "not for censorship".

Er...to be fair, if God exists (and prohibits something) then surely His authority would actually be more important and relevant than any state or federal authority?- RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS
I need to get back on Bravely Default. It is very classic FF in its way, but I keep getting distracted by other games, reading, television, life in general, etc. As someone who played every game up to X, I've been rather uninterested in the direction the series took. I look at each new iteration in the hopes that it'll be something I'm interested in but so far...its not.- Journalism and Bias in the Gaming Industry
I'm sure they didn't put it in on a whim; I disagree with the professor putting it in the syllabus at all though. Absolute prohibitions don't leave room for context and, IMO, that isn't a good thing. The professor runs the risk of appearing hypocritical if they try to address historical perspectives and they use something that uses the very prohibited language that they've called out in the syllabus. Proscriptive syllabi are fine provided the absolutes are maintainable, but most absolutes are not.- Non-game related Kickstarters

I recommend watching all 6 videos; it was a fairly interesting debate. From what I could tell the arguments boiled down to - Pro: Offensive ideas challenge social norms; for social development to happen in positive ways, all social norms must be challenged whether we're happy with the challenge or not. Con: Offensive ideas can lead to offensive (criminal, horrendous) action, therefore the free expression of offensive ideas have to be built with no protection for offensive speech that leads to offensive action. The con side kind of fell down because while they present a justification for limiting free speech (stopping inciting words), they don't make the necessary connection - to my mind - of how the offensive speech automatically creates offensive action. As the third pro-commenter, Shami Chakrabarti, mentioned that approach is akin to victim blaming (its Charlie Hebdo's fault they got killed because they were offensive). They're also vague on who determines intent and it basically seemed like their criteria was "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist". Bans devoid of context are problematic. For example the ban on the use of the term "colored people" means discussing the NAACP is now verboten. It also prevents discussing gender in animals & pets (you don't have a woman or man dog); in fact the ban on male and female actually might make it more difficult to discuss transgenderism since gender is male/female not man/woman. And it also prevents discussing a whole lot of stuff within its historical context, or to discuss offensive things that use those terms. Not all of that may be within the scope of the Women's Studies course, but it points to the problem of arbitrary limitations which are devoid of the ability to consider context.- What you did today

HAWK THE HUNTER - Terry Marcel is going to open a kickstarter on August 30th for a follow-up to 1980's HAWK THE SLAYER, a cult favorite sword & sorcery film. http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/jul/06/hawk-the-slayer-film-sequel-terry-marcel-jack-palance They have some funding for the film, but need some more to have the budget where they want it, and are going to try kickstarter. Looking forward to the kickstarter when it opens.- Flamethrowers for sale (check your state laws first)

I didn't say it couldn't change. Right now, however, it's just the way it is and it's been steadily getting worse over the last ten years. It's going to take a major paradigm shift to change that and I don't see that happening any time soon. Certainly not within the next ten years. In my opinion it really hasn't been getting worse. The same kind of stuff that's happening now was happening in the early 1990s. What has happened is that more people have gotten online and with more public ways to cause and address issues it has led to a larger number of the same problems. I suspect (and would cheerfully admit I'm wrong if someone has data to disabuse me of the notion) that the percentage (people affected vs total population) hasn't actually changed though.- RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS

Funny...whereas people from Pixar movies are the ones that look weird and inhuman to me, and the designs of characters from Tangled and Frozen seem much more agreeable. That Disney Infinity shot of Anna is extra special weird, though, I'll agree with you that much. In the world of Disney Infinity, its the toy that is in the game. So you're not playing Anna from Frozen, you're playing a Toy of Anna from Frozen. That also allows them to create the toys so they fit together visually or else the thing would be all over the map - Pixar, Disney 2d, Disney 3D, Disney Live action (Pirates of the Carribean), Marvel Animation (Spider-Man), Marvel Live Action (Avengers, GotG) and now Star Wars (animation and live action). - Kentucky County Clerk still Refuses to issue Gay Marriage License
