  1. look at the date. ... will give you a moment to consider the ramifications o' such a simple oversight. the data at the site is using death rate through 2015, so by using only the single link, you convenient drop a fair number of european deaths, including 130 from the november 13, 2015 paris attacks. pretty obvious 'oversight,' eh? you naughty boy. HA! Good Fun! ps obvious we missed both american and euro additions, but france had a particular rough year in 2015. can add another 12 deaths in january 2015 for france. also another 4 deaths in august. weren't the only euro addition over two years. wth, might as well add a few more... just to drive the point home. 5/24 2014 belgium-- 4 fatalities 1/9 2015 france-- 4 fatalities 2/24 2015 czech republic-- 9 fatalities 5/10 2015 switzerland-- 4 fatalities 5/15 2015 italy-- 4 fatalities might be others, but a quick google search found those. during same additional two years, US adds 49? not hard to see how balance changed. and again, as has been stated before, the 55% is actual a europe comparison as 'posed to only eu. is why we posted the relevant eu quote, which still shops eu ahead of US but not 55%. "The average fatality rate for the 28 EU countries is 0.114 with a 95% confidence Interval of -.0244 to .253. The US rate is 0.089 is lower than the EU rate, but they are again not statistically significantly different." oh, and switzerland were still beating the US too, which were the original point which got lost somewheres.
  2. as a true star trek fan, perhaps you know if the writers ever bothered to explain how/why vulcans (even pre-translator vulcans) and other aliens have americanized english accents, while characters such as michelle yeoh, james doohan and walter koenig had (or affected) unique regional accents? in the case o' yeoh, the issue were obviously unavoidable, but considering how anal the canon/dogma folks can be, we wondered (though not to the point o' distraction or anything) if an explanation were ever given why hundreds o' years in the relative future we still had scotty sounding like groundskeeper willie, but klingons and vulcans were channeling good ol' midwestern and atlantic coast USA. HA! Good Fun!
  3. speak o' the busted math then make the following observation: "The averaged EU rate comes out about half that of the US, even when including the ISIS stuff, and is far lower when not." dear lord. didn't the board just go through the mistake o' averages? would be as ridiculous as using the averages o' each US state to come up with an overall death rate for the US. thank goodness for all those states such as maine and new hampshire, eh? but yeah oecd figures and us state department numbers is not gonna have identical confidence intervals. got a better source? makes more sense to take oecd numbers at face value than to try and average individual european rates that is for darn certain. btw, brevik/norway weren't actual included in the specific eu comparison, which should have been obvious from the quote we included. and yes, there were multiple sources provided for the data such as, but not limited to the following: https://www.statista.com/statistics/248845/number-of-victims-of-mass-shootings-in-western-democratic-countries/ http://archive.is/f4gbv (considerable data utilized comes from this site, but only the archived data from 2009-2013 remains, so 2014-2015 cannot be adequate reviewed. however, the original data is oecd) https://www.start.umd.edu/gtd/search/Results.aspx?expanded=no&casualties_type=b&casualties_max=&dtp2=all&success=yes&region=8&ob=GTDID&od=desc&page=1&count=20#results-table also appears to be reliance on data from jaclyn schildkraut of the state university of new york in oswego and h. jaymi elsass of texas state university... mostly from a politifact article. a book by john richard lott, an economist with his phd from ucla, is also referenced, but no specific footnotes or useful links is available to cross-reference. it is worth highlighting how the cprc site appears to be a pet project of professor lott, so is kinda skeevy to reference the book as a source w/o making more obvious how he is a contributor to the article... though he clear ain't hiding the fact neither as he responds to comments personal. the linked table, which seems to have confused zor, were specific added to show where switzerland ranks compared to other nations insofar as mass shootings is concerned. in spite of low crime, switzerland actual suffers from a relative high death rate due to mass shootings. "Even just using the chart's data we can see the 55% claim is rubbish," were low energy. were never claimed the chart were representative o' the eu. the isis exclusion comment were pretty much rhetoric. the kinda soverignty conflicts referenced were as follows: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-12/macedonia-charges-30-with-terrorism-after-kumanovo-shooting/6461990. isis terrorism 'round the globe is hardly the kinda insular sovereignty bloodshed being referenced. rhetoric. HA! Good Fun!
  4. low energy fact check. can't use only the chart. "The average fatality rate for the 28 EU countries is 0.114 with a 95% confidence Interval of -.0244 to .253. The US rate is 0.089 is lower than the EU rate, but they are again not statistically significantly different." though in the spirit o' fairness, the 55% bit specific references "europe and the eu," so no smoking gun so to speak. and again, as with the US, all of these events is anomalous. take out the anomalies and you have little to compare. perhaps compare maine, massachusetts, vermont and new hampshire to switzerland... or norway? oh, and you don't cherry pick data. explain the data is fine, but simple throw out anomalous is typical referred to as "academic dishonesty." HA! Good Fun!
  5. also, keep in mind if we combined mass bombing and mass shooting incidents, russia would rank #2 and belgium would rank #3. the mass killings is always what prompts these debates, and the per capita death rate from mass shootings in the eu as a whole is 55% greater than the US. given the larger and more diverse (economic, social, ethnic, etc.) population o' the US compared to other western nations, is difficult to compare US. HA! Good Fun!
  6. And then some! Ive also never seen: Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Its a Wonderful Life, Citizen Cane, etc. *runs* They made me sit through those in film class when i was a kid. They're all terrible. Well, Casablanca isn't terrible. It's kinda charming actually, but the rest. Don't bother. it's a wonderful life is schmaltzy even by capra standards. vivien leigh is an actress we like to look at, but have never much appreciated her save in small doses, and gone with the wind is seeming interminable. casablanca is not even making our top five humphrey bogart films, so we can't put it on any kinda best film list. citizen kane, however, is an awe inspiring movie on multiple levels. is kinda a bc/ad moment. as far as filmmaking is concerned, citizen kane is the equivalent o' the invention o' the transistor. before kane, movies was something, and after kane they were something else. kane introduced technical and narrative film techniques which any modern movie viewer will tend to miss as stuff such as montage and deep focus is staples in 2017. am only able to imagine what it were like for a 1940s craftsman o' movie making to be seeing citizen kane for the first time. sure, the acting in kane is beyond reproach but, particular given modern tastes, the storytelling is competent w/o being genuine evocative. the making of kane is actual more compelling than the story o' kane. am having a hard time recommending kane to casual fans o' cinema. even so, for the film fan, and for the film industry itself, kane changed everything. deserves the recognition it garners. HA! Good Fun!
  7. am only seeing five party members, but ui implies six, no? HA! Good Fun!
  8. From the late 80s there's been an ever increasing militancy to political discourse - and discourse in general. We're in a period of hyper-normalilzation, a slow boiling of the pot, where most have noticed somethings up, but can't quite put the finger on it. Even the discourse on this little random corner of the net has seen a dramatic change in the last 10 years. Now the discussions around dinnertables all over the world, have always been a little casually racist and objectifying. Not good, but at least managable... But today we're seeing mass generalisations on big network newsshows, accussations flung out without a shred if proof or remorse and huge political scandals that are just 'par the course'.. People are numb to it, which only invites even more. Actually I think the political discussion here on the Obsidian WoT board have never been better than now. It used to be bloodsport here. People really got insulting and angry. Bans and warning were common. Now, points are usually ably argued no one gets too angry. We are an example to the world! Who'da thought? am not certain if obsidian is an example to the world, but am expecting if you spoke to an activist who were in washington in the 60s when ranks o' soldiers were positioned outside the pentagon, white house and capitol to prevent protesters from literal storming the gates, and asked if the dialogue o' today is more or less militant or polarized than what he/she recalls from times now past, the answer would be obvious. perhaps it is the result o' the internet influence... somehow. HA! Good Fun! ps seeming statistical anomalies is recognized in footnotes, not ignored. lack o' integrity to try and ignore or marginalize data which tends to discount a theory or position.
  9. highway companion were an underrated album, in our opinion. "so it goes."
  10. typical our reading is continuing education/professional plus a few select works o' fiction we reread 'til the bindings fall apart. for example, got eight copies each o' dubliners and as i lay dying. maybe throw in a highly recommended novel every couple o' years. even so, am rereading mcmaster's book. read it back in 2000ish. seems like a good time to review. HA! Good Fun!
  11. yeah, we understand the polarization problem and mentioned it, but keep in mind just how polarized were the US from mid 50s thru mid 70s. sure, the US political spectrum has been effective narrowed for a Long time, but the civil rights and vietnam period were extreme polarized. nazis never gained acceptance by either left or right during such a polarized period. even KKK memberships, while secret lauded in many parts o' the country, were nevertheless public disavowed. no alt-left. no alt-right. am honest curious how such a thing happened, seeming w/o most folks noticing or caring. takes a charlottesville moment to wake people (a few at least) up from torpor? am genuine curious, and a little concerned. HA! Good Fun! ps am realizing the label is a minor thing in and of itself, but it bothers us how folks on both sides o' the political spectrum has accepted a label which appears to transform political lepers into something within the range o' normalcy.
  12. > implying there was a time when they weren't well, the shorthand is handy. all those 70s leftist groups with near identical manifestos were tough to keep straight at times. 'course labels such as sjw and even feminist has been pejoratives in the mouth o' certain folks from their inception. our biggest concern current is actual the alt-right nonsense, and not 'cause it is a buzzword. opposite. at some unidentifiable moment in time, nazis and white-supremacists became part of the alt-right? how the heck did that happen? your typical US white supremacist during the 50s were a southern democrat (or from indiana... what the heck is with indiana and history o' white supremacy anyways?) so is adding to confusion, but even so, there has never been a time in our recollection when nazis and white supremacists were satellites within the conservative orbit. am s'posing this kinda thing happens when a nation becomes polarized. the weather underground, and similar mad-bomber groups, were identified as militant-leftist, but those groups only came into being during the moment o' polarization. can kinda see how if a group evolves from leftist core ideals it may retain lefty label even when it goes over the edge or 'round the bend. but nazis? white supremacists? nazis has never been welcome by any identifiable group on the left-right US political spectrum. is a disconcerting bit o' political sleight o' hand. how does one change the political identity o' a universal reviled organization so it becomes mere a more extreme expression o' US conservative? lord knows george bush sr. and bob dole weren't the guys embracing nazis as fellow conservatives. just weird... and kinda spooky. managed to even get liberals to use the alt-right nomenclature to describe white supremacists and nazis. HA! Good Fun!
  13. How about this take 2977 + 49 = 3026 then take 3026 / 10 = 302 then add that to the tally IF infographic is otherwise correct and we just added the biggest 2 terrorist attacks that fell outside the 10 year range that puts the average between being hit by a bus and falling out of bed. Obviousy, that's not proper statisticsing (yeah, I make up words) but just to force them into the chart. you forgot the 9 per year already averaged, yes? personally, 311 per year is unacceptable to us. 311 is a fair bit higher than the rifle related homicides in an average year in the US and yet after every mass shooting involving a rifle, we get calls for bans. sure, old people falling out of bed and dying is gonna be more frequent, but am thinking we noted elsewhere that all falling deaths in the US account for +35k a year, so is probable more common than one suspects. (aside: falling danger is our excuse for not cleaning our gutters yet again. got a couple estimates. ~$500. now that is a mind boggling number. falling out of our chair when getting estimate coulda' killed us.) with terrorist events and mass shootings... these is rare events. can't simple throw out high and low when sample size is small. throw out large and small and maybe 1/4 o' sample size is gone? 'course averages is inherent flawed... and how questions is framed makes more fuzzy. russia, for example, has very few mass shootings, but they more than make up for such paucity with bombing incidents. https://crimeresearch.org/2015/06/comparing-death-rates-from-mass-public-shootings-in-the-us-and-europe/ HA! Good Fun!
  14. dear lord. "historical menswear" is any clothes men wore at any point in history? great. we got a wonderful photo o' fdr as a toddler. maybe george lucas coulda' used accurate "historical menswear" from apocalypto to explain leia's slave outfit from return of the jedi. is nothing wrong with dressing up the cutesy glasses anime girl in a cutesy goth-inspired outfit, but try and convince folks with the inherent legitimacy o' historical accuracy is not your best option. HA! Good Fun! ps @lephys we got no issue with glasses. if ydwin were a ranged character, glasses such as she is wearing would be awkward but not much o' an issue. the problem is she is apparent a melee combatant... and combat is not fencing in a salon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOcxnQRUhMM y'know what the one thing missing from the clip is insofar as accuracy is concerned? mud. chances for mud and muck to be a factor 'pon any field o' combat is gonna be high. a significant percentage o' combats is folks rolling 'round in mud and muck... which makes for less impressive choreography on tv and big screen. glasses such as ydwin's in melee combat is... amusing. am not over concerned 'bout accurate or real, but if folks is actual gonna argue accurate and real, then they better be honest 'bout such.
  15. just like they did with the branch davidians? HA! Good Fun! Ok, they'd wait him out and then burn him alive. that will teach him a lesson. HA! Good Fun!
  16. just like they did with the branch davidians? HA! Good Fun!
  17. *sigh* am hardly "focused on this." review. we mentioned ydwin miniskirt. were off-hand and minor aspect o' our post. were the smallest of small details. nevertheless, valmy objected, claiming length were perfect normal. were such an observation by valmy particular probative in reference to ydwin meshing better with the obsidian description o' a rogue? nevertheless, we responded... and keep responding every time somebody makes an additional silly response. am not responding to the skirt so much as lack o' reasonableness we get from responses. HA! Good Fun!
  18. yup, looks exact like the vailian menswear above. HA! Good Fun!
  19. I'm not sure of the source of this, but I feel like it shows the difference? (skeevy chart) Also pretty sure the amount peacetime Americans killed with firearms inside US borders is more than the amount of Americans killed in every war and armed conflict America has participated in put together? Don't take my word for it though. Typing on my crappy phone so I didn't check. hate the chart. have seen it many times. of course it avoids recent terrorist activity (e.g. san bernardino) from the past few years. and 'course it ignores 2001. so do an average from 2000 and include 2015 and 2016. average becomes pretty darn scary. kinda disingenuous to remove the large peaks in the curve. shoulda' left such stuff outta the chart. cdc also reveals americans is 3x more likely to die o' falling accidents than firearm homicides. motor vehicle accidents is also resulting in 3x more deaths, but we don't see much effort to death-proof cars. firearm suicides is actual 2x greater than homicides with near 25k deaths. 'ccording to the fbi's 2016 report, there were 248 victims o' murder by rifles of all types in 2014 and 2014 were the most recent year covered by the report. shotguns were providing similar but consistently greater death rates (262) while blunt force weapons such as baseball bats and hammers were considerable more deadly (+400) and bare-fisted or kicking deaths took an even greater toll (+600). knives and cutting instruments were particular dangerous with more than 1,500 corpses resulting from homicides with such weapons. handguns is by far producing the greatest body count o' human homicides and suicides, but such weapons is never genuine targeted after one o' the mass shootings. as for deaths in war v peacetime firearms... *shrug* we would be willing to take tn money on such a bet, though we can't give exact totals for peacetime deaths and am not certain o' an overwhelming win. keep in mind there has been over 1.25 million US soldier deaths in history. add civilian casualties, particular from civil war, and am expecting the total is quite high. sure, a large number o' soldier deaths will be attributable to disease, particularly from pre-1900, but you did not preclude such. the civil war really messes with tn odds o' winning the bet as it were such a bloody conflict for Americans. the actual 2014 death rate per 100,000 due to homicide by firearms is 3.5. given how small were the US population for much o' history, even if we kept the death rate constant, the totals would drop substantial. now, if tn is including death by suicide with peacetime firearms, then he gots a chance. is a tough call as means o' suicide over the years has changed dramatic. coal gas ovens were the means dujour in the 40s and 50s. ... back to the lurk... just hate the chart every time it gets posted. HA! Good Fun! ps civil war deaths is almost certain underreported. confederate reported deaths don't match the expectations o' most historians, which ain't surprising as confederate record keeping were suffering at the time. add between 100k-200k soldier deaths is gonna be a fair adjustment. gd might know civilian civil war deaths off hand, but we do not and am too depressed by such a thing to check.
  20. *chuckle* armour with a lacey fringe? leg armour? tights is leg armour? as the artist mentioned, ydwin gots a modified vailian outfit... and even by vailian standards, she is a hiker. the penguin will give her detention if she catches her. ydwin "armour" (insert eye-roll emoticon) is miniskirt length. nothing wrong with miniskirts. we like miniskirts. am happy to meet women who got the stems to make a miniskirt work for 'em. however, is no reason to tango like this, over this. be honest. HA! Good Fun!
  21. there isn't a catholic school in the country which allow a "hiker" like ydwin through the front door. HA! Good Fun!
  22. am gonna wait for info. immediate after these incidents, people like to guess. unfortunate, even when actual facts is known, the arguments and debates started sans facts don't end easily. from the video we seen/heard, sure sounded like full-auto, which makes it very unlikely the weapons were purchased and owned legal. there is limited exceptions whereby an ordinary non-gun dealer/manufacturer could posses/own an automatic weapon, but we got no way o' knowing if the shooter and his weapons met such exceptions. we don't know if the shooter had mental health issues. we don't know if the shooter were affiliated with an organization being investigated by the fbi (or even the cia) as extremist or terrorist. we don't know if the shooter's body were found half buried in a small mountain o' empty twinkie wrappers and coca-cola cans. etc. ... however, we do know the shooter were not an immigrant or a recent visitor from chad. we mourn the senseless loss, but am gonna sit this one out 'til we know something... anything.
  23. we got no problem with accepting broad categorizations. however IF a person is gonna parse and worry over the definition o' the poe rogue (such as has happened in this thread and elsewhere,) then it seems clear ydwin is a more likely fail than edér. the miniskirt wearing, death fixated scientist/goth-girl with fragile glasses and a light rapier is not gonna fit any as yet released obsidian description o' a rogue w/o some serious mental calisthenics... which personal doesn't bother Gromnir much at all. no, she ain't back alley muscle or a shocktrooper, but so what? heck, our favorite paladin from poe were a st. elcga shieldbearer wild orlan aristocrat from the vailian republics. yeah, try and make that one work w/o a full serving o' crazy. am pretty laid back 'bout such stuff. however, if a person is gonna get worked up 'bout the definition o' rogue and the appropriateness o' edér to be embraced by the definition, then am expecting those same people would have even greater problems with ydwin. lack o' ydwin concern seems disingenuous or fundamental flawed IF one has similar concerns regarding edér... or edair. as Gromnir has said elsewhere, am personal in favor o' leaving up to the player to rationalize any class (or multiclass) build they can imagine and actualize. if is mechanical balanced, then am not thinking limits based 'pon personal notions o' proper or appropriate is having any value whatsoever. let players play. nevertheless, if somebody is gonna play they reasonableness game with class identity, am willing to go along and show folks where and how they is being hypocritical or unreasonable. no matter how you look at it, edér makes perfect sense as a rogue... if such were ever a serious concern. HA! Good Fun!
  24. at the moment am feeling the chicago blues perhaps a bit ironic, but sweet home chicago actual predates chicago blues... but what the hell. HA! Good Fun!
  25. type the following words into search: retaliation rogue build could the guy pictured 'bove be a mercenary or shock trooper? sure. a character you might expect to see in dark back alleys or the heart of a battlefield? 'course. might he embrace a brutal fighting style? why not? a retaliation off-tank, with big shield and one-hand weapon is actual a great option for devil. if is main tank for potd, you will probable want fire godlike, human or dwarf with high constitution, 'cause you is gonna wanna be getting hit, but not crit. squishy rogues typical need have higher con to genuine tank. our personal preference for the build is actual wild orlan for the defensive bonus and rauatai for the +1 con. off-tank? well then, race is a bit less important and there is good arguments for many builds with 'bout any race combo. again, at release and in-game: "Rogues are vicious killers, feared for the brutality of their attacks. They can be found as often in dark back alleys as the heart of battlefield skirmishes. Though unpredictable and undisciplined, rogues are commonly used as shock troops or as part of a surprise assault, their withering attacks breaking enemy ranks and morale. Rogues tend to congregate in larger numbers in cities where they can be steadily employed as mercenaries or hired muscle." get rid o' the silly glasses, put a shield in her hands and give her some decent armour, and ydwin then might arguable look a bit like a poe retaliation rogue... which is to say she would look more like the edair pic. am suspecting ydwin's true value is not as a rogue or a cipher. nope, her real value is for cosplayers. add a nodachi and a blindfold to your ydwin costume and you is sudden the android from nier: automata. will be a serious boon at conventions... if deadfire is popular. HA! Good Fun!
