I think part of the problem is, Bethesada is just about the only company that tries to make "crpgs" of the free roaming kind (the Gothics being the only other ones that spring to mind). One day, they are going to wear out the poor Gamebryo (sp?) engine. I would love to see other companies, Obsidian included, try their hand at such a project.

No, not just you. It might not be a complete deterrent though and it could lead to an escalation. I.e. pirates with bigger boats, bigger guns, pirates simply just starting to sink ships with improvised torpedoes (like the fire boats that the English used against the Spanish armada) and then ransom the survivors. You need to root it out at the source and destroy their base of operation on the coastline.

That's good IMO. The only issue is that the new things they tried follow the same 'CINEMATICK" / emo approach. That is just a low blow. They do sort of follow a pattern though. "Formulaic" if you want. Based on NWN and Kotor I would expect to show up at a council which declare me very special and the saviour of the universe, sending me off to the four courners of game world to gather clues, which leads me to the hidden place where an ancient evil awaits me for a show down. It can be fun if well done though. I did like Kotor

There are no mini-games in Dragon Age: Origins. There are puzzles though. (But no towers of hanoi) Sweet music Heh, Towers of Hanoi brings back memories of one of the less good parts of Kotor. One of the few mods I've ever used (in any game) was the one that removed the randomly occurring turret minigame.

It is perfectly possible to say that they have handled some things badly. I think what rubs some people the wrong way is the 'I have waited patiently, therefore they *owe* me!' attitude that some people (not you) seems to exhibit. On that note, I think it is time to let that subject rest, it has already been rehashed a couple of times over the years.
