When it comes to deflection it is impossible for a Paladin to be on equal footing as a Fighter (the Fighter should always have a small lead), especially when using an estoc as a Paladin. That is, unless you do not properly equip and/or build the fighter for tanking, while you do for the Paladin. But it is a minor detail, especially later in the game. What is problematic with the Paladin is that while being a hair better at tanking than most other classes, his other uses are completely inadequate. His support abilities are minor at best and most are rendered pointless by Priests and Chanters (especially later on). Along with this, his offensive capabilities aren't much better than his supportive ones. To underline this problem even further, I'll remind you that almost all optional traits and talents unique to the Paladin class have no bearing on tanking (for the Paladin) but do on support and offense. Again, area's where Paladins most people agree they're lackluster at. I didn't say equal, I said comparable. As in close but not the same. And that's with every ability and talent Eder has gotten being devoted to increasing his tanking ability. My paladin on the other hand has been taking abilities to increase his damage potential. Is Eder the better tank? Yes, but he had to give up much of his damage potential to get there. My paladin can still tank fine (like when Eder gets dominated) but is the highest damage dealer in my party, (which includes grieving mother).

Gromnir is a half-orc character in BG2-Throne of Bhaal who sometimes talks about himself in third person or plural. That "hah, good fun" stuff is also a quote by him. It was fine in the game. On a forum, however, I find it annoying and harder to read, but that's freedom of speech for you. Yea I remember Gromnir the Bhaalspawn and that morningstar he use to drop... I loved that morning star so much, i used IE to modify it to a +5 weapon lol. Gromnir the Bhaalspawn was modeled after Gromnir the poster you've been arguing with. Also, for what it's worth I agree with Gromnir. The Paladin is excellent class, the major problem being that it is rather passive when compared to other melee classes. My PC paladin has deflection comparable to Eder, but is using an estoc and has done twice as much damage as him over my game.

I'll but any content Obsidian puts out, probably a few times actually. I'm curious though, when did Obsidian "promise" that there would be no DLC for PoE? The only thing I recall them saying is that they wouldn't do DLC in place of a proper expansion. That still leaves the possibility of putting out an expansion and DLC. And for purely cosmetic stuff like VO, etc. done after development is complete, I don't see the harm.

new character classes
illathid replied to luttenplunder's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Isn't that basically the artificer from Eberron? -
I think the big problem is how they've described the races in character creation. Race isn't a huge issue in Eora, and culture plays a bigger role in discrimination. This is seen in the game and many lore sources, but the racial descriptions run counter to this. So the fix is to change the racial descriptions so the match the rest of the lore, not the other way around.

For what it's worth I think having weapon qualities change the base damage makes the most sense to me. But I'm also very cautious about about stacking multiplicative damage modifiers after the BB. Another thought would be to change might to an integer. Not sure how the math would work out for that, but it's an idea.

Not really. Granted, I'm still in act two, but I give the best gear to whoever would use it best. I don't really use the watcher talents, and Eder got the weapon focus ruffian talent for free. The talents are rewards from factions, the watcher abilities have 0 impact. If I compare statistics on Edér and Pallegina: Total damage done: Edér: 37372.6 with a sabre and shield Pallegina: 25504.6 with a greatsword Weapon focus and style talent on both. They are both well equipped. Edér has been in the party only 1 day longer. This is on my ranger playthrough where I kept her just for that stupid +6 accuracy and +5% hit to crit conversion. Not worth it all. The next time I recruit her I'll point her to a nice and cozy bench in the stronghold. Ah, I didn't know factions gave reward talents. I haven't gotten that far yet. I've been doing side quests and just started level 9 of Od Nua.

Because this is hardly an issue. Get Defender Mode, get Wary Defender and GG you're good. Since Fighters are usually brought along specifically for the purpose of tanking, who is going to mind spending these levels on that ability? Likewise, Faith and Conviction is not automatic on NPC Paladins, which is part of the problem. It matters because it changes how the classes play. I made Eder into a dedicated tank, while my paladin PC is a DPS/Off-tank. While Eder is only a marginally better tank than my paladin, Eder has done about half as much damage as my PC.
-
Something the OP doesn't take into account regarding the Paladin's tankyness: opportunity cost. Paladin's get Faith and Conviction automatically, and if it's a PC you're pretty much guaranteed to have great defenses, regardless of which other abilities and talents you choose. The fighter, however, has to invest his talents and abilities in to making sure he's a good tank.

How many parameters do you want to include? If you know your ACC, base weapon damage, and any modifiers that apply, as well as their DEF and DR I think it's already known, yes? Only thing still being worked out is how exactly DEX and armor affects attack speed. It's the Dex and Armour effects that I specifically want to compare, so yeah it's kinda important What difficulty are you playing on that it actually matters? PotD++? Or is it just for theorycrafting fun? I can understand that. Just theorycrafting. I'm partly curious about how armour penalty and Dex interact with each other. Like if I have a character in full plate using a two handed weapon, what's the effective DPS of going 3 might & 18 dex, compared to 18 might & 3 dex, etc. I really like theoretically optimizations within certain constraints, but you need to know how all those constraints work to do so properly.

All damage multipliers are additive rather than multiplicative, and exceptional is just another damage multiplier. Also, the damage rating for your weapon takes your might and exceptional properties into consideration which is why you thought your average base damage was 27 before multipliers. Average base damage for a pike is 17. (1 + .03(exceptional) + 0.3(might) + 0.2(reckless assault) + 0.15(two-handed fighting) + 0.6( sneak attack with glanfathan boots) + 0.5 (crit)) = 3.05 17 * 3.05 = 51.85 damage

EI Mod and my opinions
illathid replied to Mdalton31's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There's no way to say whether IE or PoE is objectively better, so all anyone is doing in this thread is emoting "IE Yay! PoE Grrr!" or vise versa. However, for my part I bought a physical copy of every IE game on release, and BG2 was my favorite game of all time, until now. For me, PoE is better than BG2 in almost every way (the major exception being quantity of content, but that's understandable considering the size of BG2). -
I'm not convinced. +1 Accuracy or +3% Damage and Healing, for example, I'm not convinced that the +1 Accuracy is a no-brainer. And tanks will still want to have defences, maybe even Constitution just for the reduced Recovery Penalty. +Accuracy used to be much more powerful than it is now. Yeah, accuracy is much less important now than it was earlier in the BB, but I still think even +1 accuracy on a stat is no brainer for any build or concept I can think of. I would even take +1 accuracy over +6% damage and healing. Your stat distribution would make it a harder decision than it is right now, but I think it would be even better without Accuracy.

If I'm not mistaken, a lead dev really disliked tabletop mage classes (wizards in particular and I can see why) and your sentiment might seem to be one of the dev's issue. Borderline godly at higher levels shouldn't be possible. Powerful is fine, but borderline godly just doesn't seem fair to others that play or main other classes and see themselves suddenly outshined. Edit: ShadowTiger, that's the thing, I have a non-DnD background. I don't play DnD. I may have played games inspired by it, but I have never directly fully played DnD, I couldn't get into it. As you can see from my signature, he merely disliked that mages classes in tabletop DnD could often be better at any given niche than classes that were dedicated to it (e.g. out tanking fighters, being better skill monkeys than rogues/bards, etc.).

You have a point about robes, but I just wished they went whole hog with the soul power thing. Make it explicit that every class ability and attribute is a result of your soul's power, not your physical attributes.

Godlikes and the Gods
illathid replied to Luckmann's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Like Luckman says in the OP, Ondra makes sense to me.
