Character Death
Falkon Swiftblade replied to jivex5k's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
you know what, I know it will sound funny, but I wonder why there even has to be killing in RPG's? Has anyone ever played one where you didn't kill people or baddies? I think I may create an rpg for a personal project, and instead of death, maybe they're banished to another plane of existence. You could still attack and fight them, but really deaths in games are mostly trivial anyways. I know Dark Souls is an acception to the rules, but I never really thought about how violent RPG's were, even if it's not blood and guts, you slaughter thousands of baddies. Now I have to rethink all the mechanics in RPGS to make em fun but different. -
the main thing I hope they improve upon with this version of game is I want really well rendered lighting and shadows. I also want them to take advantage of things like tessellation so environments have some texture and its not just a bunch of circles and boxes with painted textures. It doesn't need to be photo real, but if the tech is out now, and the games gonna be coming out in 2 yrs, lets use the resources available to us now. Icewind Dale games looked pretty for their day, but we can really push things now a days with programs like Zbrush, and improved tech.

I personally would really prefer more music than not. Not that it has to be large orchestra, but I don't want the same 4 songs looped throughout, especially if there's several dungeons, I think the sound should have texture and layers to it, maybe sometimes it's choral, maybe sometimes it's a solo instrument, I guess it depends on the mood and themes the game is aiming to achieve. I like what I've heard so far. One theme that really surprised me was the theme song to Legend of Grimrock. If you haven't heard it, check it out. The Monk Class
Falkon Swiftblade replied to Aedelric's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
True story: when I was in middle school, I went to school with this kid who may have had telekinesis powers. I remember sitting at the table with him and we would set books up across the table from each other, and he would stare at the books for a few minutes while rubbing his temples or chin, then in one swift motion he sort of brought his hands from his head towards the books at the opposite side motioning to it, and the books would usually flip over, and sometimes fly off the table. These were text books and not flimsy things. He didn't know how he did it, and I know it wasn't with a string or wind or anything like that, something similar maybe related to a force push move would be a cool move. -
Well my friend, I wouldn't worry too much. That game is older than some people on this forum, they've made a lot of games since then, the artists are much better than they were 15+ yrs ago, and technology is way more powerful. The dev's have said a few times they like the option of a player not having to kill everything in it's path, and brought up some of their old games in which you could talk your way out of almost everything if you were specced right. I think you'll probably be in for a treat. The ONLY thing that makes me hesitant is the continued stress on how Mature they are going to be able to make this. Also Tim Cain seems to really like violence in his games. Although, I think more than likely, you'll be able to get around the game without being a masochist or a saddest.

Your Personal House
Falkon Swiftblade replied to Osvir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Not sure if anyone played Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning with the expansion with Dead Kel? But that was the most fun upgrading the player's home into an awesome keep. I loved the quests to do that allowed me to build upon the foundation, and I liked that you could recruit NPC's to come move in and they offered services for you that added more game play, such as the guy who would allow you to tame a creature into a pet, and the guy who made a small fighters pit giving you options of mini fight games. The only thing I would have liked was a final quest to defend it from pirates or something as a final stake in the ground that it was finders keepers. -

I think this is a Kungfu game coming out soon, The heavy Asian theme would probably not be appropriate for this game, but I like the animations if you click on each hero. http://kfgame.ru/ It's in Russian, so google translate is your friend. -

never played that game, but I like the idea of the monk being sort of a xfiles detective person who uses his knowledge of the entities and a sort of mystical ghostbuster maybe. -
Coins in Project Eternity
Falkon Swiftblade replied to violetarian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I don't remember the game I played a long time ago, but it did not use money at all. It used a barter system. You had to collect widgets in that region and combine other things to trade. Each new region used a different mechanic appropriate for that area. They turned resources and money into a mini game. So you never hoarded money, everything served a purpose, the items you collected were used to progress you through the story, such as it may be collecting parts to rebuild a boat in one region, and parts to fix a rocket in another region. I don't recall there being any merchants, you just found items like potions and better items. Also FWIW they didn't count towards your weight. I honestly don't recall, but I'm pretty sure they didn't hinder your inventory either. I'm not a fan of encumbrance, or any mechanic that slows me down. I am a big fan of recipe's and combining objects into new ones. I really liked how Rogue Galaxy did their inventory in that way. -
Character Customization

You know what? I know a technique how to do this using 2d and it would work fine in this type of game. In fact, I don't think it's an unreasonable request. I'd be willing to mod it if possible, depending on the direction they go with things. Worst case scenario dev's could pre-render cloaks and other cloth simulations and import them back in and still most of the time they don't because of clipping issues. Although users of the new Unreal engine will notice fully real time cloth simulation this next generation with UDK4. i'm not sure if Unity 4 supports it or not, but my industry friends using it right now love it to pieces.- 49 replies

The Monk Class

I really hope they make a good monk class. I've played a lot of monks in games, and I think most of the time they leave me wanting more. Kind of like Batman games. Although holy moly if they had Batman AC combat with monks, dear jebus it would be awesome. I know it won't happen in this type of game though. -
You know what, I had never played an Elder Scrolls game until Skyrim, minus an hr I put into Oblivion and was just too bored to continue, but anyways- I really liked how Skyrim handled their legendary item quests where you find the item that starts the quest and the gods talk to you in dialog and send you on your journey, and it mixes up the reading with the ambiguous deity. Things like that, and the Sentient weapons in BG2 were fantastic. I always wanted a sentient magical bow that shot fireballs or lightning bolts.

Well I see Armor being brought up a lot on here, but really how many RPG's do you fight against enemy's that are armored? Most of them you're fighting beasts that have no armor. It's a little different than playing Solid Snake, and trying to punch through a tank, versus punching a elephant or a hill giant in the gonads. With few exceptions, I think the fighter monk could open a whammy, especially since the player is typically the one wearing armor. -
What mold should be broken?
Falkon Swiftblade replied to fan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm just seeing this thread, but I tell you what, I'm so burnt out on vampires and zombies over the past 20 yrs, if I never see one again I'll never miss it. I'm sure for you young kids they're cool and awesome but let me tell you if you had to eat the same meal every day for a decade or two I'm sure you'd get really tired of it too. I'm also tired of Dragon's being the ultimate bad guy/boss. Sure they're cool, but lets make their encounters interesting. How about a final boss fight not in the tallest mountain or deepest dungeon? How about that just unleashes the beast so to speak, and you spent 20 hours hunting him down think you're about to fight him, only to find out, "Oh Crap, I just let the dog's out..." and the actual encounter takes place across the over world and you have to chase the boss down, and trap it before it destroys a town or something in x amount of time. All the while he's hellbent on destroying his objective until you piss him off enough he notices you to attack and fights back, but the whole time he's dead set on destroying his objective. You and your party have to keep chasing him or running him down trying to mobilize him and whittle away at his health while the boss is just destroying everything. You could run this scenario in many ways, but the point is lets have some combat that uses the environment, and we're not all locked into a tennis court whacking attacks back and forth inside a 10X10 box...- 131 replies

Character Customization
Falkon Swiftblade replied to Gyges's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I actually am in the minority in this one in that I want a lot of customization in my appearance. I don't want myself to ever feel like I'm going to run into my twin 4 times as I progress through the game and NPC's look like me but with maybe different clothes. I don't want 2 million players playing the game and 94% of us all have the same portrait, because we're all unique people. Its not 20 yrs ago when they had like 1MB to store graphic info & it was take it or leave it. It's ok to do something like that with portraits if you never see your hero, but they should have a plethora of choices now a days, unless they're really planning on having a ton of loot & we never see our hero. Which reminds me, I hope there's an option to wear vanity gear or hide pieces of armor like my helm.- 49 replies

The Monk Class
Falkon Swiftblade replied to Aedelric's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I also think it may be interesting to use the Monk as a pacifist class. So that its basically a defendable anti warrior that uses his skills to stun lock enemy's, disable their movements, or use "pressure points" to disable enemy attacks or weapons. Maybe even de-buff baddies so that following attacks allow the other damage dealing classes to exploit the new found vulnerabilities, while also allowing the monk to heal his team. At the very least I'd like the option to choose to be a traditional fighter monk, versus one who plays more of a support role. I'm ok with them being able to wield weapons, but would like it to be done in a way that its not just a fighter with increased dexterity who can duel wield. Hopefully they're more interesting than that. -
they could record a full orchestra in Prague if they needed to for really cheap. One of my contacts used to be a audio director for a game studio, and if memory serves he spent 3 days recording about 60 minutes of music and it was about 20k for 80ish instruments and a few soloists. Though it may be even cheaper. About 6 yrs ago it was about $100 a person per session which is 3-4 hrs. My #'s may be off, but I remember at the time I was surprised compared to a hollywood film it sounded reasonable. Depending on the plot, size of the world, and several other things having a full orchestra may be over kill.

I think they have a fantastic rewards system currently, however if I had the funds to give I would give more knowing they were doubling their animations and particle fx, or maybe I'd also strongly consider giving more for a swashbuckler class. Really though, I just want them to put in a lot more polish than the past several games they've put out. Honestly someone else brought up a good point on the Reddit forum about bugs in Obsidian games. These guys have had a history of putting out some glitchy games. Although to be fair, Icewind Dale and Baldur's gate games were some of the most fun RPG's I've played to date in spite of the bugs. I saw recently Fallout 1 was made for $3 million. That was a long time ago, I kind of wonder what we'll end up with here with 2/3's of that budget? Although it's possible they could still break $3 million yet.

The Monk Class
Falkon Swiftblade replied to Aedelric's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
To me a monk is one of the most disciplined classes in these types of games or story's. They're more believable to me and I respect them more than other classes because I understand to some degree the sacrifice they've made to get at the level they're at. They spend exorbitant amount of time practicing & training their mind and body's into lethal weapons and also have mastered their bodys' conditioning them into fantastic vesals of knowledge and wisdom for healing and defending. I've seen first hand accounts of them breaking bricks with their hands. Not Karate chopping them, but punching bricks into dust from inches away. I've seen them being stabbed with a spear and the spear tip won't break their skin, but it will slice through other things. I've watched a gentleman do 2 finger push ups upside down without help. That type of discipline is super human and completely different than just hacking a dudes arm off or running a lance through his belly. I have a lot of respect for those guys. Those are real people too, not something from story books. My personal play style would really prefer to play as a cleric type of player that is a warrior priest that lays hands on people and pray and heal their wounds, while also being able to defend myself as well. Again, I've seen first hand accounts of 3 Asian men who in 3 minutes literally prayed away a woman's tumor in her belly. It was live with Dr's there and you could watch the tumor shrinking in real time. They were not monks, but it just shows you what's possible. Whether combat is kung fu or another martial art is debatable. I think using my body as a weapon makes more sense to me than wielding swords and running around in bulky armor. It's true in some games it may not seem like it fits the world, but neither is it normal to see an Asian who speaks perfect English with a Scottish accent, but they're out there, and it gives them plenty of character. -
I know they're using Unity as their engine, but I've seen in the new UDK and another engine out there they have the tech to create destructible objects now. Previously this was a ton of work for artists and texture artists but now it's not much extra work. Like I said I'm not sure if Unity supports this tech, but it should be possible to add this in game. I think it would be a fantastic feature.

I think there should be multiple ways to find them, it might make sense for a character to best the owner of said weapon in order to win it. Yet, if it's really a legendary weapon, it probably should be legendary and there should be a series of quests to find clues, or parts to rebuild it. I think there should not only be legendary weapons and armor, but rings and amulets as well. I'm also fond of items in pairs, such as a pair of bracers that one does something, while the other does something else. Or I like having the opportunity to craft my own legendary item and choose how to build it. Do I want to take a broken blade and turn it into a new long sword, or two daggers, or use the raw materiels and melt it down and craft it into a special helm. I'd prefer it to also have the option to have legendary items for pacifist characters too. Not everyone should have to die in a cloud of blood and chunks, or burn into an ash heap.
