RPG elements that I would die for
TrashMan replied to Djantari's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
That would depend if you can bluff the guards/whatever. If you are posing as a merchant, you can: - go in alone - get merchant disguises for everyone - try to pass them off as bodyguards So again, LOGIC. Sometimes everyone going into an area would need a disguise, someone only 1 person would suffice (as long as your other party members aren't incredibly conspicious or recognizable) Also, items getting fame/being recognizable - at least by some people. If you wield the "sword of divine judgment" somebody would notice. A more trickier thing is association. That means if you do a crime, how do they recongnize you? Personally I'd have items have stats such as memorability (how much they stand out ... hmmm better yet a memorable yes/no flag) and a "conceals face" yes/no flag. That way, if you rob a guy while wearing a common armor with a full helmet, the authorities are unlikely to find you. Heck, the victim is unlikely to ever recognize you. Buuut.. if you go around with your face exposed and in bright pink armor.... the authorities will not have a hard time finding you. Could be something as simple as the NPC tracking if he knows your face or not AND a a chance to add a big memorable item to his list of items he associates with you. So it's kinda "are you wearing any items from his list? Does he know your face?" -

No romances confirmed
TrashMan replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
On the idea that AAA graphics and cutscenes do not take away from the storytelling: It really doesn't sound like they should. After all a writer writes, the animator animates, so it's not like they take away from eachothers work time. But...the writer has to take into account that all the things he writes will require cutscenes to be made. And art content. Which means more work for the 3D artists and animators. So cutscenes and AAA graphics does take more work and resources... in other words more time. It is a tradeoff, and it will always be. But with new technolgoy and methods, it might become more efficient requiring lesser sacrifices. This does not apply to PoE since it doesn't have highly detailed cutscenes with facial animations. Personally I'm not sad to see romances go. Not every game needs them, and as long as an interesting story and content are provided, ti's all good. After all, there's always headcannon and imagination -
We didn't say anything when they came for the smokers...
TrashMan replied to Walsingham's topic in Way Off-Topic
Its okay Trashman. I know the right thing to do and say. I'll guide you and take that responsibility away from you so you don't need to worry anymore I don't worry for myself. At least not about that. I don't smoke, I never got drunk in my life and I don't do drugs. My only vice is spending too much time on the PC. And ya know, I wouldn't mind someone forcing me away periodicly.- 165 replies

It's kinda here already in a form and fashion. Society already "brainwashes" people to think and feel a certain way. Questioning certain values of trains of thought that are pushed will result in hostility and pressure and change. The irony is that humanity has always been like that and always will be like that - given our nature it's the only way.- 165 replies

What never ceases to amaze me is just how aggressive people on both sides of the fence can be. "Pacifist" that want to kill all "warmongers" "Progressive" people that in the end, are just as much a slave of dogma (of a different kind) as the people they are "tearing down" The only conclusion I can come to is that humanity itself is nothing more than a jumbled mess

Get the balance right
TrashMan replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I agree. Frak I hate it when games "force" bosses on you. Even some good games did it. DA:O had Earl Howe - a an old man in leather armor with a 100000HP life bar that you had to bash on his head a thousand times with a giant axe for him to finally die. It's bloody redicolous. Opponents should ALWAYS be as strong and durable as it makes sense for them. I don't care if Bob is a "Boss" or the leader of an evil organization. Just because you're a leader doesn't mean you're a good fighter, or durable or anything for that matter. -
Death godlikes - those..aren't horns..they are .. I dunno. More like sunglasses...that you can't see trough. Talk about a raw deal.

Class Name Ideas
TrashMan replied to ZornWO's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
What's the point of re-inventing the wheel? Shall we re-name other things while at it? fire = burny thingy? sword = stabber/slasher? -
Honestly, given that men and women AREN'T equal physicly, I find this as a cop-out. It's a cheap way to place the massage "men and women should be treated equally" by making them completely equal...when in reality they are not. Of course, you're not going to treat them COMPLETELY equally in RL either, but we are talking in general terms here. It's a matter of taste. No different than preferring redheads to blondes. Not something I would classify as racist. I don't see how it would affect the way I usually interact with women.

OH please. Not the "it's fantasy, so anything goes" card. Just because it's fantasy doesn't mean it has to be brainless. I want even fantasy worlds to make sense - and that means it's inhabitants should act with at least a minimum of common sense. Yes, I say it is stupid because copper, bronze, iron and steel and known things. They exist in RL and their properties are known. Hence why using copper or bronze when iron is readily available is silly. You don't make a credible work by making people act like retards. Highly doubtful, given that steel has a higher melting point. Not to mention you are now just adding weakneses/bonuses for the sole sake of having more materials. Which b.t.w., could be any materials, so I don't know why you insist on already known materials instead of just inventing more fictional ones. Besides, what exactly does pointlesly adding more materials add? What exaclty is the difference between "steel, masterwork steel, mithril" and "bronze, steel, mithril"? Other then making less sense, the only difference is the name. Not necessarily. The vast majority of weapons in IE games were steel. Yet there were still other metals used. Like starmetal, mithril or silver. It makes sense. Even if you have multiple materials, one will come up on top in terms of availabiltiy and overall performance, and thus be the most common. Fine, then people will eat trough their nostrils, far fireballs, drink with forks (because the shape of the spoon conducts less magic), people will cheer you when you call them idiots and proclaim you will kill them all, and while were at it, lords and generals magical items that can end all existence out in the open with just a single guard.

"Full" story? What makes you think you aren't getting a full story. In a branching story you aren't getting the full content, but you do get a full story - for the character/path you selected. Wanting mutually exclusive things and meaningful consequences without anything being locked out is an oxymoron. You cannot have mutually exclusive things at the same time.
-
I'd say that for a RPG, the story (and your journey/discovery of it) is part of the gameplay. And people usually say gameplay >>>>> graphics or story >>>>> graphics. I don't recall people saying they enjoy bad gameplay **** @Sarex: You're being quite agressive about this, and I think I made my position quite clear. But fine, let me spell it out for you. I PREFER BG1 DESIGN. The entire world feel more real and more close to reality, more tangible. and the loot system was part of it. I don't like ToB because there's just too much loot. BG2 was somewhere in between and I'm fine with it. However, I still prefer BG1. And no, I was never saying every character should have just one magical item (even Aragorn had 3 IIRC). I was saying not everyone should have every slot filled with a magical items (unless you are a die-hard completionist or using walktroughs to get every last items you can). I'm speaking of items a regular player will come across in an average playtrough. People who go hunting Drizzit because they know he has a magical swrod tend to skew that.
-
God, I hope not. That's way too many materials to be creadibly used in the same period. Once you get steel, you don't use bronze anymore, since steel is better in EVERY WAY. So you can either have only 2-3 different materials of increasing quality TOPS. Aside form that, you can have materials that aren't necessarily better...just different. Like silver.

Oh please. Lay off the preaching. The "mature" thing to do cerantly isn't what you are proposing. It's more of ignoring such a thing as race exist. And yet it does. And in case of PE, we're dealing with different species to be more exact. Things like profiling will never go away. Ever. Because we're all doing it, it's part of how our brain works. And if there is any setting in which such things are justifies, it would be fantasy setting. Because differences there can be far more than superficial. *** I find white women more attractive then black. Does than make me racist? According to you, it does.

You know what would be cool? Not being able to identify magic items easily. As in, you can only tell it's magical, but not much more. As you wield it, you slowly discover it's attributes as they come into play. You'd discover the sword grants you a 10% magic resistance bonus the first time someone slings a spell at the character wielding it. This would also open the possibiltiy for merchants to "rip you off" or you ripping them off, since few would be able to accurately judge/identify the weapon.

How is that more immersive? Not being able to sell items for even a fraction of their value is not something I like. A bit problem with consumables has always been - when to use them. If it's extremely rare, you're gonna keep it for emergencies, but that emergency will never be "dire enough" to use it (especially given save+load). You're probably going to think "but the next fight is probably going to be harder, I shouldn't use this yet". Either that or you'll forget you had that scroll of awesome. That a problem I've run into even when such items are plentifull. Common, but weak - meh, can go without it, better sell for monies Rare, but powerful - I'm gonna use this in the next fight. Really I will. NO. No. A million nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooos. Level restrictions on items are the work of Satan.

Call me crazy, but people are stupid and sometimes need saving from themselves. Yeah, they don't want it and it may not be right to force the issue. But dammit is humanity stupid. Alcohol, drugs, guns.... seems like humans can't trusted to do the right/smart thing.- 165 replies

I think you are defining "progression too" narrowly. The story progresses. The character does stuff, meets people, grows and changes. The world is affected by your actions. Not to mention that I find LIMITLESS POTENTIAL growth and "from zero to hero in 5 minutes" ridiculous concepts. I don't measure my character by his equipment, but rather by his acts. So godly levels, massive powers - I don't want them. They ruin everything and demand that the entire setting/game/plot changes. Instead of bandits and political intrigues, you are now fighting demons and demi-gods, and there is a complete disconnect with the world before. I don't want to be god-like
-
No. That just means I like BG1 more in respect of quantity, usability and atmosphere. Except it has nothing to do with items set, but rather constantly inflating items and the need to have those. For most of the BG series, items went from normal to +3. There were just a few +4/+5 items. In games like diablo you have starting daggers and two-handed battleaxes that do 10 damage and end ones that do 10000 damage. ***** Take note, I'm talking about RPGs in general, not SoB specificly. Also, I hate EPIC level tiers.

To you. However, plenty of games where"dressing the barbie" isn't a center point or there is no dressing prove you wrong. To you. Don't claim majority here without any proof. "But a game like that would never work". Yes it would. EDIT: It's basicly what flintlock sez. Loot in so many games has no"soul" and it's a treasure hunt more than actual roleplaying. Player characters act like idiots or do stuff that makes little sense...because of loot. And constant item power inflation just makes things worse. I'd rather have a dozen well made items than a hunderd pointless ones. For the record, I like loot myself, but I don't like it when loot becomes the game.
-
Argumentum Ad Populum? Don't care about those. Don't care if I was the only person in the world who thinks that - I'll continue to campaign for whatever I see as better. Items are NICE. Loot is NICE. But they aren't necessary for a great roleplaying experience. And power inflation can notonly lead toredicolusnes in a setting, it can also ruin the atmosphere.

My joinable NPC thread
TrashMan replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
NAME: yesman (doesn't matter since you can legally change it in-game later) ROLE: to be a yes-man APPERANCE (and gender): Completely generic. This man (or woman) will never disagree wit the PC. EVER. The ultimate ego-stroking character, this NPC will always have kiss the players ass. He/her will change anything about him/her to suit the players will. Don't like his/her name? No problem, the local magistrate can legally change it. Don't like his/her look? Magic plastic surgery! Weather you want a sexy seductress or a shy librarian types, a muscle-bound Connan type or a slim athlete. Special items? Whatever item you designate will become that, since you are the boss. That washed up pair of undies will become his/her holy and most treasured item. Because you are the boss and you gave it to him. All will prostate themselves before your glory.
