- Common pitfalls of CRPG games to avoid
For most people, the answer to your question is "yes." People respond to incentives. Games are built around incentive systems. They work. If you want to give the game long-lived artifacts that stay with your character, then don't provide artifacts which outclass them. Either make them gain in power with the character, make them insanely powerful to start with, or make them cursed so the character can't be rid of them. But expecting the player to keep a +2 sword around when a +3 is available for role-playing reasons is unreasonable. No, it's not. I've done it and I know other poeple who turned down more powerful weapons. The incentive just has to be something different other than purely numerical. You have to get the player to love that +2 sword. Then he won't want to give it up.- Weapons getting renown or fame after defeating enemies
I sell fist? Yeah, I don't see that working with fists. I mean, your fists might get renown, but I don't see you selling them. Items used for mighty deeds by mighty people get fame. Simple as that. And it does work for bows too. Bows need to be strong and accurate.- Common pitfalls of CRPG games to avoid
I like the way Outcast handles it. Now only does it tell you the reegion ,but you can ask any NPC where to find person X. And they will point you in the right direction (if they know). Like a compass. They literately turned towards the direction the NPC is, point a finger and say "I think I saw him that way".- Bottomless omnipresent stash in Eternity?
I think you misunderstand. I never said that there shouldn't be a lot of things you COULD pick up - the amount of loot is in general irrelevant to the argument. I said the game shouldn't encourage you to do it. Inventory management is a concern - one that raises tactical, strategic and logistical issues. And therefore it shouldn't be ignored. What I don't support is the effort to make a tedious, time-consuming and illogical task simple and fast. Nobody is forcing the player to do it - heck he doesn't need to. Yet some insist. Think of it this way: You can get +1 level for your dagger in-game by killing 100 villagers in a village, and the player does it. It makes no sense for the character to go on a killing spree or the party to go along with it. The guards react and make life difficult for the player. And going around and killing 100 people is tedious work. So the player complains and the developers make killing villagers faster and remove the guards. It's pretty much the same. Do something tedious for a tiny in-game advantage, then demand it should be made un-tedious, regardless of how it affect the setting, the gameplay or anything else. Carrying everything that isn't bolted down is not a "playstyle" that should be supported or cartered to. If you really want that +5 sword, then make room for it. Drop something you don't need. Don't carry unnecessary stuff to begin with - leave them in your keep before you set off. Return later for that sword.- The best storytelling...
So someone explain to me why are you so utterly convinced certain types of narrations are objectively and categorically bad? Does it really matter if the narrator is omniscent and omnipresent or not? The Bilbo/Varric variant works well, just as the "unknown narrator". It doesn't matter that one doesn't get a "this is 100% genuine and not just that guy misremembering" stamp. You don't have certainty either way. And "immersion" is not irrelevant or useless. Not any more than any other word in the dictionary anyway.- Warhammer 40k RPG
I actually modded Chaos Gate. Couldn't stand that Terminator power sword + shield was so crappy. It's a great game. Have many fond memories. I played it again..about a year ago. Still good.- Heartbleed?
