Save scumming
TrashMan replied to HardRains's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
There seems to be some reading comprehension issues. I'm not advocating removal of options or saves from PE. I'm merely stating the very real problems with a system in regards to the atmopshere/immersion and general experience. And stating my personal opinion. That is how the game SHOULD be palyed FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE. You don't have to do that tough, nor am I forcing you to. And yes Jarmo, I do believe my opinon is "right" - shocking, isn't it? Also, since I never argued with Argumentum Ad Populum, I never argued against Iron Man mode. Being in majority/minority has no correlation to being right or wrong. And what would you know about my standards? You are assuming very much there. Iron Man has a problem with corrupted saves, hence why I would personally use a single auto-save + checkpoints. So if your save gets corrupted, you don't have to start over from scratch, but for hte begign of chapter 3 or something. -

Actually, if you have a proper ergonomic chair, the back problems are a thing of hte past. Especially if you combine it with back excercises. But I digress. Good thing that PE has IronMan mode. The error you are making is the assumption that game MUST allow you to play it any way you want or that there isn't a "proper" way to paly it, to get the desired experience out of it. A different way of playing by definition will give a different experience. Choice is all nice and good, but it's not a golden rule, nor do the developers have to supply it. You have a choice of not playing or getting a mod if it's that big of a problem. -

Why tempt someone in the first place? It is evil. Do I jiggle hot, sexy, willing women in front of you when you're horny? Wands of cash when youre in debt? Food when your'e hungry? Nope. Also: The very knowledge that you can reload and prevent death causes you to take actions and risk you (or a sensible character) normally wouldn't. -

When death is not to be feared, when there is no dread, no fear of faliure - there can be no true roleplaying. Period. The very knowledge that you can reload and prevent death causes you to take actions and risk you (or a sensible character) normally wouldn't. -

As far as I am concerned, Iron Man is the way the game SHOULD be played. Yes, I'm saying that people who don't play it that way are playing it wrong. Iron Man brings forth the tense atmosphere and helps get into the character more. It's as close to true PnP playing a game can get these days, and that is exactly the desired experience. But I can't really be mad for people wanting other things. We all want other things... however, the problem lies in where you're looking for them. I might want Battlefild 4 to be a strategy game, and not a FPS. -
I don't know what games you have been playing, but Baldur's Gate showed no health status of enemies and plenty of other RPGs before it also did not. Josh Sawyer would agree with you that feedback is good because it allows people that do not already have an in depth knowledge of the system to engage with it. Expert mode is a collection of settings that are forced to provide a more hardcore experience. If you don't like that you can: A) Do not tick expert mode B) Do not tick expert mode, and then go into the options settings and enable the hardcore features you want and leave the ones you don't want out. No Health feedback is already in for Expert mode whether you like it or not. What I am wondering is whether Defenses will be obfuscated from the combat log, because if this feature doesn't make it into expert mode then it most likely won't make it into the game. It would be fair to assume that if stat popups are disabled on enemies then their values *should* be hidden by the game (perhaps not the bestiary) but I'm not 100% sure. "The player should know these things" is not an invalid argument and that's why the default mode has exactly that. Your preference is actually the default setting. Why would you want to infect the hardcore setting with non-hardcore elements ? I repeat- thisis silly. It has nothing to do with "expert" knowledge and everything to do with basic things your character SHOULD be able to tell. PERIOD. There is no logicla reason to remove some information other than your desire for more challenge - regardless of how little sense it makes. And that is fake challenge. Hardcore my ass. You might as well argue that EXPERT mode should show no names for characters (because your PC shouldn't remember them), should make the inventory icons invisible (you should have to remember exactly in which grid you put your potion or sword) and similar stuff like that. Hide your own health completely too. And damage while we're at it. What we are talking about it not some EXTRA knowledge, but rather the basic, that any Bob, **** and Harry should know. There is absolutelyn o logical reason to take that away. You might as well start the game with a one-armed, one-legged character for that handicap.

Well, due to a lot of computer work, I'm having back problems. So I'm doing back excercises. The doc did say that heavy lifting is the no1 cause of spinal pains and injuries. I know a few body builders who now have intense back problems because of that.

You were saying? I guess even the non-existant Emperor is enough to keep kicking the collective asses of 4 chaos gods for 10000 years. Say, how are your Black Crusades going?

Draigo is cool. You have to read his fluff as a Greek hero epic, not as a historical report. None may defy the Will of the Emperor!

Saved points + a single auto-save. That way you can quit if you have to do do something wihout requireing you to re-play large portions, but trying to cheat your way trough conversations -
The game will give you that feedback on default. Expert mode will turn this stuff off, which is something I think a lot of the 'yes' voters fail to understand. Expert mode turns ALL help off (and locks it). I don't see why. There is a difference bitween "too much feedback" or "too detailed feedback" and "no feedback". The player should have access to knowledge the PC should have. And hte PC should be able to roughly gauge the shape the enemy is in. Some king of "expert" mode that purposfully handicaps you beyond reason for challange is silly IMHO.

I honestly prefer for a game to give you a general indication of some things the PC shouldn't have accurate knowledge off Like enemy health. The "Near Deth", "Heavily Injured", "Injured", "Barely Wounded" etc do a far better job of portaying combat than "12/40"

But of course. That is why military schools don't teahc standard effective tactics. Things like "fire teams", "supression", "flanking" .. so perfect strategies. You equate "smart/logical way of fighting" with "lack of tactics". It's not. That's what tactics is all about. You always have optimal strategies.

Yes and no. Mechanics in general - and save mechanics in particular - affect gameplay, the atmosphere and expereicne delivered. If the developer wants to deliver a specific expereince, then limiting saves or enforcing a specific playstle is a valid option. Some might see it as restrictive, but there is no rule that the palyer gets to determine everything. Imagine playing Amnesia, but with the player having an option to use guns by default - it ruins the atmospehre immediately. -
