Least Liked Companions
Sabin Stargem replied to Primislas's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Grieving Mother. I just can't relate to her. -
I suspect that the biggest bugbears would be sorted out with the expansions or sequel. The first iteration of most series is apt to have growing pains. In any case, the game definitely doesn't match up to the old Infinity Engine games in its current state. There are too many bugs, there are inconsistencies for the writing and quests, stronghold isn't up to BG2 standards, ect. Still, I am glad to have backed the game - Obsidian has always been filled with potential, and sometimes they can be brilliant. Giving them a chance to do so is my pleasure. No different from other developers, like Nigoro for La-Mulana 2. I think the next couple of years will be very fun.

Better without stronghold?
Sabin Stargem replied to halfoat's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I want the stronghold to stay. While there are issues, it is more than possible for Obsidian to make the stronghold a nifty part of the game. -
Do they? Final Fantasy is the only example I can think of. Try "Food Fight". I am pretty sure that would set a suitably low bar. Mind, it is more on account of gross incompetence, rather than just being uncanny. I don't mind 3D in of itself, but I find that the creators of such films can make some scenes very...noisy, in a visual sense. Sometimes there is too much going on, and I can't focus.

I think that Obsidian shouldn't have made the player a watcher. Rather, they should have given those powers to a permanent companion who can reveal his or her visions to other people. This way Obsidian could have made the companion become increasingly mad and broken as time went on, evoking empathy or cruelty from the player who acts as a guardian. As it is, the status of watcher is very disconnected to the player, since Obsidian has to make the player central to the plot - without taking away their ability to make choices or changing their character. My reason for why the player has to protect the Watcher Companion: The biawac sheared off a portion of their souls, and the ceremony by Thaos had bonded them together. If one dies, the other follows.

BG2 is more modern and popular than BG1, many people still had working copies. BG1 by contrast is less compatible than modern hardware, so not as many people could replay it - opening up a bigger niche for BG1 Enhanced to occupy. Of course, BG1 Enhanced being released first was also likely to slake people's thirst for Baldur's Gate. I expect BG2 Enhanced to have a long tail, since it is far more future-proofed than the original version of BG2.

Why does this game run poorly?
Sabin Stargem replied to Ebolaids's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Engines are not just about the end-user's experience, it is also for the actual development of a game. They are expensive to create and maintain, which is why Unreal, Cry Engine, and Unity are popular: They take away the time and expense needed to make an engine from scratch. Saying things like "It runs fast on the user's computer", misses important aspects like: "How long does it take to customize?", "Can it import asset X?", "How much skill is needed to use it?", "Is the asset store fair and diverse?" and so on. Right now, the best thing for Obsidian to do is to use Unity for expanding Eternity 1, then choose the best engine for the next major project. -
Having a dedicated modding forum would be good, with sub-forums if it gets popular enough. Move the Unity Engine aspect from the Character Building section to Modding, as the current setup is an odd mix. After all, modders are more likely to talk about issues concerning Unity than character builders would.
