  1. A well written plot and an imaginative world will not be worth **** if gameplay is **** and if the game is littered with bugs especially when those bugs do things like break mechanics, break missions or - worst of all - are game stoppers.

  4. @ Tuco Benedicto - Yeah, my bad. I clearly can't write worth ****. What I was trying to say basically amounted to I enjoyed Diablo because of it's gameplay, the story coming in it's case sort of like a bonus. Yes, it didn't have the complexity of Planescape but it was excellent regarding it's focus - combat and loot. So it isn't necessary to complain about it as it is possible to have a game for which gameplay received primary attention and also has a well done story that serves that game's purposes. Yeah, I don't think I managed to make it any clearer what my point was, so I think I'll stop writing now.
  5. Untrue. You can choose the color in which you want to **** up the galaxy. Which is a slight cosmetic difference in narration. And its not like the trilogy has some wonderful choices and consequences that are marred in the last minute by a lackluster finale - it was always always a narrow rail road from day one. You're preaching to the choir. I was merely being derisive.
  6. Regarding the story vs. gameplay thing going on around here I really liked how it was done in Diablo (the first one). It was clear that the story was in the backseat as gameplay and mechanics and what not took precedence, but even if it was pedestrian at it's core (basically kill the big evil), it was made atmospheric by simply having little bits of lore strewn around that added to the experience. Of course Diablo doesn't compare in style to what Eternity is supposed to be, but I think it helps illustrate that you don't need to spend massive amounts of time and resources on making an excelent story as "less is more" could work just fine and by doing less other aspects of the game don't need to be affected.
  7. No. But there could be a quest where you have to remove a curse from the PC but nothing trivial like vampirisim or lycantropy, rather something like being cursed with testes growing on the soles of your feet and along with flat feet.
  8. I belive stuff like this usualy has the nasty tendency of removing focus from properly designing less important aspects of the game such as combat.

Color coded for your (in)convenience since they're basically the same ****, make nearly 0 sense, invalidate every choice made in the entire trilogy and are unlocked in relation with a completely stupid feature probably aimed at forcing you to play multyplayer so as not to grind like a buffon. Also basically ripped of the endings of Deus Ex. edit: I didn't play the supposedly end-fixing DLC since it's highway robbery even it's free and also very inteligence insulting.

Such a system was used in Venetica but there you controled only one character and armours were rare, I only used about 4 armours in the game and one of them I think was necessary to finish the game. So - 1 character, very limited number of choices, largely the opposite of Eternity, in short no. If it must be done, do it Arcanum style.

  12. Couldn't this be done simply by dropping the classes and making a skill based system? With something like S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and a sufficiently diverse range of skills you could basicaly turn your character into whatever you want. Or think of the pre-Skyrim Elder Scrolls system where you choose main skills and secondary skills that get variable bonuses and still retain acces to the rest only at lesser values and maybe harder to raise in the beginning.

  14. No tutorial, no manual. Maybe, but just maybe, a short list of shortcuts like menu, inventory etc. Now seriously, RTDM and if there must be a tutorial keep it separate from the main game. And especially NO tooltips popping up all over the place.
  15. In fact it could work quite well. Morality should be something of an instinct and work more with your real life morality system and not some words in the character stat screen. Suppose you come across an unit of knights pillaging a village and killing everyone in it. The peasents beg you to intervine. You must decide fast or there won't be much of a village left. If your (the player not the player character) morality system is truly what you belive it to be you will decide under pressure and with little information what to do in accordance with your OWN morals and not what you belive the game wants you to do. Being of the lawful good type you jump to help the wretches but while doing so you remember that you heard rumours about this village in that other village and supposedly vile things happen here. Without a limited time span in which to decide you could just do the 5 days journey back to the other village question the **** out the peasentry and learn that the knights are justified to kill those other peasents since they are a bunch of sadisctic child raping cannibalistic demon worshiping necromancer-clowns. With limited time, being of the lawful good alignment you jump right in to bring justice and peace and universal healthcare to the miserable child raping cannibalistic demon worshiping necromancer-clowns and thus proving once again that good is stupid and the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

No, I think what he is saying is because the Mclaren F1 was a masterpiece, that if someone wanted to pay homage to that car, they shouldnt make the Mclaren F2 a compact hybrid car for the sake of innovation. Funny thing is that the spiritual successor to the F1 IS going to be a hybrid (not a compact though) because times have changed and it is only natural to try and improve on the original ideea. I hope that Project Eternity will try to do the same and improve the concept of the games it is supposed to pay hommage to.
  17. Or the game forced it, with an encounter/ambush along the way, which you couldn't avoid. Though luck then, either reload from a previous point or accept the fact that just like in life the world doesn't go on pause for and you can miss that important billion dollar deal because you got a mad random case of explosive diarrhea on the way to the office and had to stop to take a **** on the side of the highway. The Mclaren F1 is to this day considered one of the best (if not the best) supercar ever made. It also had the engine hood plated with gold for cooling purposes and the driver's seat was in the middle (as in not on the left or the right) for balancing purposes. By your logic because it was a masterpiece all attempt at inovation in the car industry had to stop right there and then. "Hey should we put these new type of tires on the next Ferrari. They improve grip and reduce fuel consumption?" "No dude, the Mclaren F1 was a masterpiece and it didn't have them."
  18. How about awarding XP only for the first kill of an opponent type? Kill your first goblin - 100 xp, all other goblins after that - 0 XP and keep the big rewards for quests etc.
  19. Could be ok just as long it doesn't happen every 5 minute or every other character because then you just get to watch bloody movies.

  22. It would be interesting to see a character lose his **** in an encounter depending on the type of the opponent. But no metter or any other type of numbers visibile to the player. Orcs? No problem, not even the little brats fear them they're so common 'round these here parts. Demon from the 9th circle of hell? Roll sanity mate. Fail roll and nasty things depending on how badly the roll was botched. The Crawling Chaos you say? Sorry no roll for you boy, you sanity has just gone into retirement. And effects could vary from immediate loss of control, temporary or permanent drain of menal stats or even nastier stuff like perhaps the death of a character. Just imagine coming face to face with Azathoth the Daemon Sultan, and a char decides to shoot himself (in the face no less) to escape the horror. Fun times.

Mass Effect is the epitome of originality when it comes to species/races design, allow me to demonstrate: Asari - Blue humanoid space chick stereotype Turians - Humanoid alien with a noble warrior culture stereotype Krogan - Humanoid alien with a barbaric (but still noble in a primal kind-of-way) warrior culture stereotype It is the perfect example in a discussion about how not to design stereotypical fantasy races. Also yes on the elemental races, I suggest Plutonium elemental with a special racial ability to kill through radiation poisoning.
