this whole thing reminded me of the flame about D:OS level editor being made for 64bit only and how they should have supported 32bit... in an era when there is no 32 bit hardware anymore for years and the only thing that could keep you at 32 bit is an outdated OS well whether you use mac, win or linux, the 32bit libraries are needed for compatibility with older games

What's the point of games that attempt to emulate real life?
teknoman2 replied to Heijoushin's topic in Computer and Console
driving a truck is no different than driving any other car... but gas, brake and clutch are much harder to press and you need to keep in mind that it's longer than a car when you make turns in cities. and remember when you drive behind a truck: if you cant see his mirrors, he cant see you either -
Could be. But then why does Obsidian want Steam DRM? I don't mind using the Steam client, I have tons of games there, but I'm always in favor of DRM-free versions no matter where you buy them from. from what i know the only DRM steam has is the client/account combo... and it can be bypassed with the family sharing system, that allows a linked account to have access to your library

the main point of games is to let you experience something that you could not in real life by interacting with a fictional world through the main character. the type of games you like, mostly depends on what sort of experience you want to "live". games like the one you describe or the sims, offer the same thing with a more "mundane" aproach -

this option is implemented in wasteland 2 and many, including me, had asked since early after the kickstarter for a system like this. if they havent put it in or if they plan to have it but it was not available in the preview version used remains to be seen -
>What bothers me is that Paradox doesn't put DRM on their own games, but does on the ones they publish. i think the later may be at the request of the developer as for the steam client, it is getting a bit fat latelly, but still, unless you have less than 4GB ram in a win7 pc, you dont even know it's there if using the steam client is such a bother, you can always use gog. as for the physical copies, i think they wont need steam to run since they promished them to be DRM free

Dylan Dog is an italian comic heavily inspired on horror, light sci-fi, fantasy and detective films and books. the main character is an ex scotland yard detective that quit after his irish girlfriend was sentenced to death as a member or IRA. he then proceeded to scam people pretending to be an expert on ghosts, until his affinity for the supernatural took over and he started getting involved with actual supernatural stuff like witches, time travels, ghosts, the lochness monster, moby **** (that was a briliantly writen volume) etc. however, they kept a Scooby Doo-ish style where most of the events were caused deliberatelly or accidentally by humans, and while the supernatural made its presence known, it was never the major factor in the events (to make an example: in the lochness case, the investigation revealed that the entire incident, supposedly caused by the monster, was because of a toxic tropical algae that a ship had brought into the lake and that the company and authorities tried to cover up to avoid responsibility for the ecological damage. the supernatural presence was when semi unconscious, he saw Nessie eating the algae to prevent it from spreading around the lake, and indeed later reports showed that the expansion of the algae was strangely contained).

funny thing though, when these pictures were first drawn and published and the big uprisings of muslims against them erupted, nobody seemed to notice (neither the rioters nor the reporters that were covering the riots or anyone else that made any public speech about the matter) that among the pictures that riled up the muslims were several that were not drawn by these artists and that were not published anywhere except for the leaflets that called the muslims to arms -
from what i see in that wiki, they adhere only to protocol 1. protocols 2 and 3 that are about POWs among other things are not on the list. and even if they breach the convention, no american has ever being tried by the international court. they are only being tried by US courts. not recognising the authority of the court that was made specifically for the sake of punishing those who breach the convention, is the same thing as not recognising the convention itself
-
indeed, and the US is not part of it. still, under intarnational law these were war crimes and the perpetrators are subject to trial and punishment. however, since the US has not signed the convention, the perpetrators are judged by US martial courts and the sentences are ridiculously light. many of Guantanamo's guards that were tried and convicted to 20 or 30 years or prison, were pardoned and sent back at their posts in a few months like the trial never happened. and since they were tried in the US under US law, nobody could object

And? Why do you think this is weird, its the absolutely necessary and expected thing that any government should do after preventing a terrorist attack and still being a target most of these people have a few screws loose and go around killing just because a priet promised them a spot on the next "Heaven express". however what really riled them up is the U.S/N war on terror. in their hubris, both governments and media did not justify the war as an assaul on a specific enemy of the west like Al Quaeda or Sadam Husein, but they used the excuse of the "humanitarian mission to save the local population that was opressed under the regime of their own religious leaders" (remember the endless articles about women being opressed for following the dress code of their faith?)... in short, for the locals it was a war waged against their own religion in order to make them change their faith by force. that turned the calm and peace loving everyday people in willing candidates for groups like ISIS. considering also that their faith demands compliance to medieval standards of living, its easy to understand that the level of education for most is rather low and they are easily swayed

No it isn't... In both cases and I don't where you get the idea that it is. BG2 had a crap ton of trash encounters, that were in no way related to the quest except to maybe fill the space in between the encounters that were related. Being related to the quest means that they somehow fit in the story of the quest and not just be there to fill empty space. Which is not to say that filling empty space with trash mobs is bad. lets use windspear hills as an example. the only enemies that are not part of the Fiirkrag quest are a few animals that roam the area and those worm things. the band of ogres that you meet as you enter, as well as all the orcs, trolls, elementals and so on in the ruins where Fiirkrag is are related to the quest.

So you think there are no terrorists? From my posts with him he falls more into the camp where most terrorists are the creation of Western governments and there threat is exaggerated to give governments more control of our lives well i try to keep a level head in all of this (i dont act paranoid like the guys wearing pots on their head to block the CIA signals), but i have noticed a trend. all governments tend to make new borderline (or even fully) unconstitutional anti terrorist laws at a surprising speed after an attack... and these laws affect everyone, not just the terrorists. also, the speed most of these laws are made with, could make one suspect them to be written long before the attack, but passing them would have created revolts without the terrorist attack to "persuade" people to accept them an act of terrorism or something related, is also a great diversion. it is a great way to flood all media for days or even weeks with a single topic and sneak in whatever laws and deals you want without anyone hearing about them it's just a theory derived from observation and amateur study of politcal/philosophical texts and accepting or dismishing it is up to you. however if you dismish it thinking that profesional politicians who are best friends with every CEO of a multinational corporation (and who probably never had an honest day's work in their lives), care more about their country and the people instead of their own interests and those of their friends, i can only call you naive or, as Sovereign would say, your country (whatever that may be) exists because the CEOs allow it and will end because they WILL it

dont shoot the messenger, im just describing the video. however it is well known that in all coutries the special forces of both army and police, are trained to follow orders without question and in complete secrecy. and if you take away the "police" from the back, the terrorists are dressed exactly as the french "SWAT" (or whatever it is called there) -
let me tell you the definition of terrorism terrorism is the tactic that governments employ, when they need to "convince" their citizens to abbandon their rights and freedoms in the name of security.

i saw a video today, analyzing all camera footage from the attack. it made some pretty good arguments about the whole thing being staged. first it showed in slow motion the execution of the injured cop, and how there wasn't a single drop of blood to be seen anywhere... an AK round at close range should have made quite a mess hitting someone on the head. also if viewed in slow motion, the point of impact or the bullet with the ground can be seen clearly, and it is not aligned with the position of the head another fact that can be missed due to the camera movements and because the clips are short, is that all streets around the building are empty. no people and no cars (except those parked), in the middle of Paris at rush hour. and let's say people have run away and are hiding... the cars cant have run away too. in the panic, there should have been a huge trafic jam several of the journalist escaping from the roof were wearing bulletproof vests some people running down the street shouting "Allah Akbar", that news broadcasts identified as the 3 terrorists, if viewed attentivelly at the few frames they can be seen from behind, on their backs there is written "police" also when the terrorists board their car to escape, the car has silver painted mirrors. when it is found later abandoned, it has black mirrors the video however gets imediatelly taken down from youtube whenever someone posts it and most other video hosting sites tend to remove it as soon as they can identify it -
in my case for 14 i would prefer to have something like DA:O's tactics... without the needless stat have a set of conditions, and actions to be performed by each character when the condition is met and customize them. let's say 5 for each member otherwise you could make the game actually play itself examples would be if you lose 50% stamina, drink a potion. if the ranger uses mark, the pet will target that enemy if the wizard takes ranged damage, activate arcane veil etc small things that free you from having to keep track and micromanage every single action of your party, and also to keep things from going wrong if you concentrate on something and forget to check all characters all the time (in IE games, i often concentrated on the spell casting of my wizard and forgot to check what my fighter was doing... he was standing there and had lost 90% of his hp)

You and I must not have played the same Baldurs Gate. My advice is, give BG another spin and see how incorrect that number you stated is. the entire area of firewine bridge is quest related durlag's tower is quest related the iron keep is quest related naskel mines are quest related the other mine is quest related return to candlekeep is quest related the gnoll's keep is quest related the bandit camp is quest related the sewers are quest related the crazy priest and all his undead are quest related and so on. the bulk of the enemies are in quest related areas or are there to keep you from reaching them (ie the wyvern forest). there are few monsters that can be found randomly and give worthwhile xp after level 3

If you are talking about Deus Ex: Human Revolution, you should make that clear, and not confuse it with Deus Ex. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a complete downgrade in all respects except graphically, compared to the original Deus Ex. Deus Ex doesn't allow you to purchase "praxis", it emphasizes choice in character evolution (integrated into the game world, not as a function of arbitrarily gained and spent experience points), it awards you experience based on progress or exploration, and features emergent gameplay second to none. Deus Ex: Human Revolutions is a walking abortion by comparison. It's like comparing Baldur's Gate 2 to Mass Effect 2. at least it wasnt invisible war that had thrown any form of character progression out of the window

i would understand the argument for combat xp if we were talking about a game like skyrim, where 50% or more of what you kill are random stuff in random places, but since they go at it mostly BG style, 90% or more of the combat will be quest related anyway. so as i said: 10 xp for every kill or 100xp when all 10 are dead... does it really change the game that much to deserve a crusade?
-
Deus Ex doesn't use xp at all, haven't played bloodlines, ME2&3 are pretty linear. let me give you an example of how a quest works in bloodlines. you need to get into the Giovanni mansion. you can sweet talk someone to take you in as his escort. you can sweet talk the bouncer to let you in. you can persuade a guy to take his drunk wife back home and get his invitation you can persuade/pay the bouncer to look the other way you can kill the bouncer and go in shooting you can sneak in from the back door and depending on what vampire family you are part of and your gender, you may get an extra option now think what everyone would choose if you were to get xp for combat in that game of course PE will probably not have that many options, but unless it has respawning farmable monsters to go along with combat xp, the reward for it in the long run would be negligible, since most of your kills would be quest related enemies like in BG. so as i said, getting 10xp each time you kill a monster in a cave or getting 10x(number of monsters) as quest reward when they are all dead makes no difference in the pacing
