Update #56: Paladins and Wild Orlans
Elerond replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Orlans overall look nice, but savage look of the wild orlans is clear winner . Paladin seem to be nice front line supporter, but it is good to hear that you can make more offensive builds also. I already see some maybe worthwhile combinations with other revealed classes. Monk and paladin combo especially seems to be quite good combination.- 200 replies

There is nothing inherently wrong in instant death effects but in IE games they were often too much luck based abilities that could kill one of the most difficult opponents with one hit or do nothing. Which made them somewhat random effects and very effective things for those who don't mind save-load multiple times in row. I like more Witcher style instant death combos where you can finish easily opponents that are stunned or otherwise disabled, although in witcher 1 first boss fight could be one of the hardest battles in game or easiest depending on did you have instakill combo or not.

If people were confused what devs intended then I fail to see what is wrong that they corrected peoples false assumptions of the game? I heard that if devs want make today game with attractive female lead who has heterosexual relationship with man, for example kiss him then publisher reject to publish your game, because that is just weird. http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/20/publishers-rejected-remember-me-because-of-female-lead/ So one could make assumption from that attractive female characters are only okay if they are ogling objects or subjects of men sexual advances, which one could see rising some resistance when about half of the gamers are female. It's so sad when people quote me but it seems they didn't even read what I said, giving information about your game is not wrong, in almost in any RPG since pokemon I expect I can create a male or female character, and in strategy games the commander is usually genderless, they said their game would be like XCOM and in xcom and other strategy game you play as a commander of undefined gender. There is lot of RPGs where you have only one gender option, like for example Quest for Glory series, both Witcher Games (premade character), Venetica (premade character), Planescape Torment, Lands of the Lore series, Nox, etc.. And as kickstarter example Torment ToN had changeable gender as stretch goal. And in the Massive Chalice they failed to inform people in pitch video that you can select ruler's gender and speak only about king option. In strategy games game don't usually give commander visual or audio role in the game, meaning that you don't need to specify his/her gender in the game if you don't necessarily want to do so, but from their pitch video I get picture that this will not be case with Massive Chalice.

From what I heard in their dev chat you would have been able to play as a male (king) or female (queen) all along, like in any other RPG, but they clarified because some people were freaking out. What is kind of disturbing is when developers start to overly apologize for beign "privileged white men, with glasses". Also, it's funny how they go on like 20 minutes on how you can have an homosexual couple (which is fine, nothing wrong with some suprise buttsex) But if you want developers make attractive female characters for heterosexual men (which are 90% of them), well that's a ****ing crime now.

How? Developers of Massive Chalice said when they achieved their goal that they want more money so that they can carry out features that backers want. And then some backers ask to play game as immortal queen instead of immortal king and devs say that they will make that as an option and I think that they also said that they make possible to retire heroes with same gender partner and make that viable choice even that they don't produce more heroes. It should probably be remembered that they have very few features locked down in Massive Chalice as it is still in pre-production which they have mentioned multiple times and they ask people to success features and other things that they want to see in that game.

Relationship/Romance Thread IV
Elerond replied to Tigranes's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think someone from Obsidian said that characters that they have revealed aren't necessary companions, but only important characters in the world. But eight companions don't offer very much choice overall. What comes to ration of male and female companions, I think that we will probably see 50/50 ration (4 males and 4 females). -
I think it quite normal to run games under development on pc, especially when console which game is aimed is not yet in the market. And especially when game is not even from the console maker (in this case from MS or it's studios).

Bold idea: No UI at all
Elerond replied to Lord_Darkmmon76's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
If there is no UI then there no way to control game, as there is not interface which user can use to play the game and then it is not game any more. I understand that you mean that there should not be HUD componets in game and in my opinion that is very bad idea, because information that those component have are very important for game like PE. -
If character icons are aligned vertically to left side of screen you could give each icon own button that brings icon owner's action bar visible. And if you go left side L then you could but quick bar and combat/dialog log to bottom of screen, so that player sees fast what are his/her short cuts for abilities and those who prefer use mouse abilities only one click and short cursor moving distance away.

Excelent update, Iike tone what Rob uses in his updates. UI concept look very IWD 2, which is good as it (and PST) in my opinion has probably best HUD in IE games, as it dont waste so as much space as other IE games. UI also looks like it fits very well in atmosphere what I execpt from this game. I can't even describe how pleased I am with event screen's look, because in my opinion it fits much better this kind game than cinematic events. Unnamed lizard looks cool.

Inventory management
Elerond replied to rjshae's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
That sound like system that will remove some annoying inventario searching that IE games have so much. Was it so that you could only access stash in save zones like cities and camp sites? -
Right off the top of my head there's Battlefield 3. To add few: Witcher 1 & 2 were made to PC. Witcher 2 was ported to XO about year after its PC release. (Atari) SimCity is purely PC game.(EA) The Sims 3 was released on PC and then ported on other devices.(EA) The Sims Medieval is only for PC and mobile platforms(EA) Spore is only for pc(EA) Dragon Age Orgins had different version on pc and consoles (EA Bioware) The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom, pc only(Ubisoft) Anno 2070, pc only(Ubisoft) Total War Battles : Shogun, pc only (Sega) Civilization V, pc only ( 2K Games) Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, PC only (THQ) Might & Magic Heroes VI, pc only (Ubisoft) And there is more, but these are some biggest names that are easily shown that they aren't ported from console version, most cases because there is no console version.

Gimli's Bearded Axe out of Damascus steel. Smith has also other nice videos where he makes weapons from different fantasy films and series, but I think this is probably best as he show how Damascus steel is made.

How about second hand car sellers? Pretty sure they make a killing. And they are reason why every car manufacturer uses different spare parts and why they cost so much. You usually can buy "new" used car cheaper than fix your old one.

It is Win8 (basically) plus the more pared down gaming OS. I could easily see it getting to 3GB since they've stuffed just about as many features into the on3 as baseline windows has- Kinect, IE, video handlers, internet handlers, network handlers, updaters, hardware drivers- and Win7+ really requires 4GB RAM on PC. And it will have to dynamically handle RAM and other resource allocations across the two OS. It really isn't the pared down specialist gaming system that consoles used to be. Surface would a good parallel- 32GB storage? More than half isn't available even immediately after purchase... My Windows 8 runs under 1 GB of ram, if I close all foreground applications, meaning that antivirus, firewall, sgl servers, file search, email services, etc. thing are still running that you don't have in Xbox One. And for example Windows Phone 8 uses same kernel and runs on phones that have only 512 MB of ram without any problems.
