To add into what Junta said there is also one other hitch. 7 is the minimum stat in the game. That assumes you pick a race with a minus 1 to int too, and such a race might not actually exist. Assuming you have no int penalty the lowest you can have is 8 which is basically "average person" in Eternity speak.

Anything is easier to get working on Windows XP than Windows 8.... hell I would rather have Vista than 8. You should definitely upgrade but when you do make sure to go to 7. Also to expound on what Lephys said as well. For Eternity I doubt you even need a video card. I bet if you went with a Core i5 or i7 the on chip graphics would be more than enough.

Streamers, Info Please!
Karkarov replied to Pray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not going to stream anything, likely will post things on my youtube channel. -
Actually due to recent reveals and new game mechanics announcements I am sad to say this is not a Godlike who learned to wear a helmet. It is just a generic Human fighter with Big Head Mode turned on.

Game looks great, but...
Karkarov replied to Zwiebelchen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah, pretty huge distinction there. In reality Larian had about 1 mil USD more (maybe a little more than that) than Obsidian did. They also got to save a ton of time and money because they used their own in house engine and did not have to build a new one or rework an existing one like Obsidian did. -
Why should we consider balancing problems less noteworthy than technical bugs? Well a lot of those threads are bunk for one thing. But class feedback will definitely be welcome. i suspect no one other than me is laughing at your comment, or even knows what you mean ;_; Fortunately my mic has one built in.

Beta Access Purchase

That's right hahahahahahahahaha, give in to the Dark Side! -
No. There will be no humor in Pillars of Eternity. This game is serious business. Please ignore the thread about Big Head Mode being included.

Fair enough. Moving forward, how does the pathfinding correspond to the fog of war? Does it take units obscured by it into account? (I don't think that's a common practice in modern RTS games). To be honest this is one of my few concerns with the game so far from the video we have seen. The fog of war does seem a little closer than needed and maybe should be a little farther out. It is a minor gripe though. Also thanks for the responses Mr. Adler and Mr. Brennecke! Part of what makes me enjoy these forums and have faith in Eternity's direction is how communicative you guys and the other devs are, and how willing Obsidian is to defend it's big decisions (even when unpopular) and explain them rationally. PS: Death to the big head haters, don't even think about taking that out!

The pathfinding and game state code is being completely redone. We have been reworking it since before E3, but it is pretty extensive. Unfortunately, it won't be ready in time for the initial Backer Beta launch. It is about 90% ready, but it needs to be 100% before we can integrate it back into our main code branch. I would expect that it will go into one of our first beta updates. Just to throw this out there Mr. Adler but when the BB hits how reserved do you want us to be with sharing information, posting video, talking about it, etc etc? It is going to be a real beta so all of us who are sane know there will be rough edges, would you peeps at Obsidian prefer we hold back until a few Beta patches go in to fix things like the path finding?

I'm going to die one day. That's pretty friggin' important. You should have taken his sage words at face value, he happy you will only be 32. Not that I am a day over 25.... or ever will be -
Are graphics features set?
Karkarov replied to Malignacious's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The game was pledged for 1M if not mistaken but they funded for 4M. Divinity Original Sins looks far more beautiful to me which they were funded only 1M. Just to also chime in on this Larian had other funding than Kickstarter. In fact the game was 50% done before they even put the Kickstarter up at all and the original video for it showed many of the in game assets and systems were already at a finalized state. For example they showed off how telekinesis worked in the very pitch video for the kickstarter and the environment graphics from that video were already basically identical to the full game. So did Divinity Originl Sin get funded 1 mil on kickstarter? Yes. Was that the games actual budget, highly unlikely. I would not be surprised if it actually ran something like 10+ mil. -
While I agree with what you are saying they have also at many times pointed out you can pan the camera up for a top down view and you can pause and plan out the battles in a much more specific way than you could in DA2. They simply play it like DA2 90% of the time cause,,, it isn't really very fun for the viewer to watch a guy sit on a pause screen issuing commands once every 2-3 minutes for 20 seconds a pop. Also the top down view is not as exciting or interesting to watch as the over the shoulder one. While I concur it won't be the tactical masterpiece they seem to try to insinuate it is... it is not DA2. Even if it were just DA2 combat again, the combat is not what made that game bad to begin with.

Well to be fair the reason they do better is because they basically took the choice away without being honest about it. For example in ME you can't be evil. Seriously you can't. Now you can be a really big jerk face prick, but you are still a good guy fighting for good, trying to save humanity. You are just being a little bit of a douche about it. There is only one moment in three games where you can arguably do something clear cut evil and that is when Samara is fighting her daughter, you can choose to help the daughter and not Samara. That is the one time Bioware lets a Chaotic Stupid decision slip into the ME games.

Game looks great, but...
Karkarov replied to Zwiebelchen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
See here is the skinny, I agree with you here. I think BG2 holds up fine today. I did in fact replay it last year. But it is not a graphical powerhouse and is not graphically superior to most games made in the last 5 years. Certainly not Skyrim, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or even Eternity. As Sensuki said they are using 3D models because it is cheaper, and a sight easier considering they had to make them anyway. Also IWD2 shows the character model in the inventory screen so it isn't like this is "new" for the IE games either. What I don't agree with is this: They do not look "atrocious" by any stretch of the imagination. I could link pictures of games released in the last two years with equal or larger budgets than Eternity that have worse or equal character models and display them far more prominently. Are they great cutting edge models? No. But they are not that bad, and they certainly are not atrocious. -

So just to beat a dead horse ( ) I want to be specific about something. I think Eternity looks fine. I think it looks better than BG2, a helluva lot better than Planescape Torment which I always thought looked like crap, and Icewind Dale 2. My point is the people who think Eternity looks bad, or the character models suck, are also the same people who would say that Dragon Age Inquisition is ugly and looks worse than modded BG2. I don't dislike any of these people. I think Malekith is a fine dude and I have agreed with plenty of his posts. He just happens to be dead wrong this time. -

Uh no. I did the same thing with BG2:EE I did with the Witcher. I googled it and took one of the first pictures I found. You want to blame someone, blame your own whacked out tastes that are reverse what 95% of the world will say and Google for finding those pics first. Also happy that "modern 3D graphics sucking" apparently only means "Bioware, Bethesda, and Obsidian". But just to be nice here are some more. A unmodded Skyrim Screenshot. How about this one? I pulled it from the same thread you got that crappy hallway screenshot, same guy even posted it. How about this game while we are at it? It sure looks like crap. -

Karkarov replied to Zwiebelchen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Let me think. That effect actual graphics? Three maybe four, only because no one makes a mod to update all textures, it is always just racial skins, or just environment, or just equipment. How many mods were incorporated in making BG2:EE? I was trying to be fair before though. Time to take the gloves off now. How about this modern 3d game? How many mods is it running? Zero. Does that look worse than BG2 with mods? Also if you think I am "cherry picking" all I did was search Witcher 3 and take the third image google found. Also Maelkith did you do a search for ME3 boring hallway picture? -

The 3D ones? Pure crap. The 2D ones? Pretty good actualy. They aged well, and i honestly consider IE games (with High resolution mods in the case of PS:T and BG1) better looking than any game Obsidian, Bioware or Bethesda have ever made untli now. ..... What? Are you honestly telling me this: Looks better than this: Seriously, I want to know. -

Karkarov replied to Malignacious's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah not getting the complaint. It has a 4 mil budget, it is not going to look like The Witcher 2. The graphics as they have been shown look more than serviceable and frankly are some of the best, if not the best, I have seen from any Kickstarter game.
