Here is a quick little tutorial for custom portrait guru's! Each portrait is 210 x 330 pixels. The smaller in game UI portraits are 76 x 96 pixels. You have to have two separate files for a custom portrait. You can name them anything you want but they must end in either a _ or plain old space then the letters lg (for large pic) or sm (for the small one). The primary file name must also obviously be the same so they match together. So Bob_lg and Bob_sm will work together but if you name them Bob_lg and Bobby_sm you will have issues. Additionally on format.... yes, PNG files work, and the in game default pics are in fact in PNG format. I have only tried using 72 ppi images so I don't know if that is restricted feel free to experiment but that is really plenty. Also yes, custom portraits already work even in the beta. File path (at least for Steam) is: steam/steamapps/common/Pillars of Eternity - Public Beta/PillarsofEternity_Data/data/art/gui/portraits/player/(female or male)/ Obviously the public beta part will drop in the real game. Ordering is pretty simple... Male portraits appear in game before female and they are ordered based on alphabetical order in the folder. All default portraits either start with the word male or female so finding your custom one in the list should be easy. Here is a pic of one I threw together in a hot minute just to show it in game. Also board mods could we get a sticky for this since I expect many beta players will want to know how is done?

First off it is impossible the exit the character creator without actually creating a character. Weird issue, maybe intended since why did you start if you didn't plan on finishing, but there it is. Most games give some sort of option to return to the main menu. Second really funny one. If you progress to the point of picking "appearance" then jump back and pick a different race but don't stop to pick your "sub race" and jump ahead by clicking on the appearance header you will be unable to modify skin and hair color but can mod everything else and even complete character creation. So you should probably just reset everything when you jump back choices and make it impossible to "click ahead". Here is a pic of what your character sheet looks like with no sub race just to show I did this in game: Also minor gripe.... you should put the culture choice AFTER stat distribution somehow. It effects your stats and when you choose stats before culture choice and aren't careful you will end up with stats that assumed you were an Aeydr when you might be from Valia Republic and get in game to find your stat line is different than what you actually thought it would be.

Okay now that we have Beta Access I think it is time we start one Portrait Thread to rule them ALL!!!!!! Why? Because we now have the ability to get a clean picture of all current portraits available in the Backer Beta and discuss their merits and lack thereof. Ground Rules: More than likely more portraits will be added as the game nears launch and or launches so please understand this is just based on the current available portraits in the Beta as it is now. So don't freak out if you expected 85 portraits, there may be more! Don't insult other users tastes or opinions. Art is subjective, it is totally okay for someone to think the portrait you love looks like crap and they are not stupid because they do. Remember we can add custom Portraits so there is no need to get crazy if you never see the perfect one for you! Okay so here is the image of all current in game Portraits you can use (as of 8/18/14) - Just so you know they are numbered and ordered based on where they appear in actual game. Top left portrait is the #1 portrait as of the writing of this post and the numbering goes from top down left to right. So.... Discuss away!!! PS: Portrait lovers.... each portrait is 210 x 330 pixels. Just in case you wanted to know.

BETA LIVESTREAM INFO/COMPILATION: Bro, do you even Livestream?
Karkarov replied to Bryy's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Your comment is more hilarious than you can possibly imagine. I don't care for reddit and many popular sites on the internet. You want to do it feel free, but when you open the flood gates you also have to deal with the sewer that comes out. I care about the beta becoming successful for Obsidian and making the game better. I do not care about being internet famous or getting hits/views/follows.- 113 replies

BETA LIVESTREAM INFO/COMPILATION: Bro, do you even Livestream?
Karkarov replied to Bryy's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
While I like your idea, lets not. I would prefer if we just keep it to this forum because the people that care the most are in fact posting here.- 113 replies

The cheapest you could get beta access on Kickstarter was 110 dollars. People forget the addons didn't because available until like a couple weeks ago and the addons are getting shut down in 4 days. This game is not going on steam early access, we are going to get codes, we put in the codes, we download to steam. It isn't going to be on the steam front page, steam isn't going to sell it, hell you don't even lose your real game key by using your beta key to play it on steam. If you really have a problem with Obsidian opening beta access and game purchase combined for around 50 bucks for all of 3 weeks or so then don't back the game. Please don't compare it to Cash Citizen, Wasteland 2, or indie game X that either release a buggy alpha mess for full retail price like a year or more in advance and never take it down, or just constantly dry hump their backers for more money.

Karkarov replied to Pray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That would be because I am only seeing humans living in the town, all the buildings have the same design style, look about the same age, and everything is scaled to be roughly normal versus a human. The one thing that disturbs me about that picture is that supposedly human guard on the bridge. Dude must be packing away those wheaties, he is possibly bigger than the Aumaua party member. -
I have to go in for overtime around 11am EST, I just hope they get the keys out before then so I can start the download on steam and it is ready to play when I get back home in the 4ish area.

He can do that if he's black. If he's not he can't. Wow Sensuki playin that race card?!?!??! In all honesty I was thinking of going more for the Shrek/Robin Hood theme team and dance just without the spandex. Meanwhile it is now 6am PST and I am sharpening mah pitchfork!

Elf Portrait
Karkarov replied to gamerdude130's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I like the BG style of portraint just fine, but they did look very "produced". The lighting is really strong in all of them, all but a few are making some sort of heavy expression, and they don't look like paintings no. They do look like photoshopped photos of people taken "striking cool poses" under mood lights. Bear in mind there is nothing "wrong" with that it is just a different style of portrait. The one thing I don't like about Eternity portraits is the same thing Sensuki doesn't like.... They are not consistent. You can tell some portraits were made by different artists and some portraits are these modular "same face different hair" type portraits while others are unique. I would have preferred a consistent style and quality even if it meant fewer portraits in the end. Unlike everyone else though I see nothing wrong with the fat bearded guy in plate portrait, it is fine. -
No idea but it is just about 1AM of the 18th here, where is my key Obsidian?!?!?!?!!? *rolls a nat 20 on his entitled douche check*

Elf Portrait
Karkarov replied to gamerdude130's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Lul Mcomb was only 22? How the heck did he get to be one of the main book writers at TSR and only be 22??? These days you have to be frigging published or they won't even look at your application. That said I loved Planescape as a setting, he did good stuff. Even if the complete book of elves sucked. -
Free gum for Backers?
Karkarov replied to wolfdyne's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I will take a pack of gum with my game thanks much. Whats with all the tops baseball card hate though? The gum in those packs was great! If you actually chewed during 1989 anyway.... -
Clashing sensibilities

It looks fine as it is now. Let's just suck it up and deal with actually having to get a close look at our character once every couple hours. I know we will survive! -

Fair enough. That watermill is just WAY too big though. Counter point: The Aumaua is bent over in this screen shot from running forward, as is the one normal human party member. The only party members standing normally is an Elf, a Orlan, and a Dwarf who have all been shown the be smaller than humans. Everyone in the village is a human so the door will clearly be scaled to human size. In other words the scale is correct, we just have a lot of short party members. -
Alright. How exactly will the game determine that you've completed the level? (you found the stairs to the next level? You've murdered all enemies in the level? you solved all the level's puzzles? you've killed the level's assigned boss?) All of the above. One level may have a puzzle you have to solve to get the stairs down to open so solving the puzzle awards exp. Another may have the path to the next level guarded by a boss so defeating the boss through whatever means (bribery, talking them down, killing them) gets the EXP, one may be a trap filled hell hole so on that one simply getting to the stairs may reward the exp. Etc etc etc. Objective EXP doesn't mean you always have to reward exp the same way every time and no one ever said the mega dungeon was 15 floors of random mook fighting on every level.

I mean I play a character because I like their moveset and play style, not due to RP, not due to some plot reason, not because I like their personality, I don't even get to make my own character. There is no "story" in Moba's. Even the most base bare bones RPG has some sort of reason for why you are the character you are and why you are doing what you are doing.
-
Don't take offense Panteleimon, he is obviously a die hard Moba player. That is how all die hard Moba players act when you say anything bad about Mobas, trust me when I say this as I have plenty of experience with it. He doesn't mean anything personal he literally just cant conceive the concept that some people think Moba's suck and their reasons for thinking it are legitimate. No, I wasn't comparing them. I said they have more in common than Dota does with Pillar's of Eternity, and they do. I am also fully well aware how different characters play differently.

Allow me to rephrase. Let's assume they drop no loot at all. Yes these beetles drop nothing, ever. It takes me 5 minutes to stealth them and 5 minutes to kill them. I have to come here 4 times for quests. 20 minutes of my life spent stealthing versus 5 spent in combat. 15 minutes of my life is worth more to me than any imaginary video game reward will ever be. Get it now? I can understand if you are some die hard RPer who wants to play a nature lover, I guess it makes sense to stealth then. Personally though I consider man eating beetles the size of horses to be monsters, not natural bits of the ecosystem. I also appreciate the insinuation that I am saying combat is unfun and you should do it for the loot. No. I am implying that when you are faced with multiple choices and one of them is clearly better you should choose the best choice. Combat in my opinion is vastly more fun than stealth in team based tactical RPG's, at least in all the team based RPG's I have played. So when combat is not only the most fun option, but also the most logical one, I am going to go with combat as my resolution choice. Also i have yet to see any evidence that combat in Eternity is in fact not fun, so I am going to assume it actually is fun. @ BrokenMask, great post. I have played an Objective Based EXP only RPG before, it worked perfectly fine. Yo Junta you did it wrong. You are supposed to bind your block to like spacebar then save the game, go start a fight with the rat, tape spacebar down, then go watch a movie and come back in two hours.

I will just throw it out there one more time in a vain hope of getting through. I am about as "hard core" an RPG fan as you can get. I like console RPG's like Final Fantasy, I like dungeon crawlers like Legend of Grimrock, I played and own all the Infinity Engine games, I am a huge fan of Mass Effect, I nerd out and actually take vacation time from work when new Elder Scrolls games release, I was enjoying Larian games before it was cool to do so, I have complete let's plays posted of the Souls games From Software makes / even host PVP tournaments in one of them, I will even play Diablo 3 here and there, and I will be buying Dragon Age Inquisition and Witcher 3 on day one. Hell I even love MMO's and play all of them that come out and are even worth talking about, after all we used to call them MMORPG's. Moba's? You would have to pay me money to make me play one of those crap ass games, and please bear in mind that comes from someone who has in fact played them. They are so totally departed from an RPG it isn't even funny. There is no story, there is no lore, there is no over arching reason I play character Y instead of character X. The tactics are all about order of ability choices, item buys, micro managing, and twitch gameplay. Those are only tactics in the minds of Moba players and "BRTS" (Blizzard Real Time Strategy) players cause god knows most of them wouldn't touch Sim City or Civilization with a 50 foot pole. Dota has more in common with Call of Duty than it does Pillars of Eternity. The end.
