Guess the release date!
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I will say December 16th just to be different. For the format looney... 12-16-14 specifically. I won't be surprised if Indira turns out to be the winner though. -
Well two things Sensuki. 1: I think the reason people are up in arms about your comments is because you are trying to make broad pretty far reaching statements about the games challenge based off what is literally the tutorial. Not only that but it is an extremely hand held tutorial being run by Brandon Adler where the "media" doesn't even get to touch it. Also maybe it's just me, but I have never played a hard tutorial, not in IWD2, not anywhere. You are talking about the Ogre one shotting someone? Josh has said in posts before long long ago that one shot kills can happen in Eternity (and he didn't say based on challenge setting) and we haven't seen the "boss" of the tutorial yet. 2: Stun and I normally don't really.... agree. The forums are littered with back and forths between us. So when I am reading posts, looking at Stun's points, and finding myself nodding... Well let's just say when two people who normally can't agree on anything do agree it is a good sign that is the right side of the debate. All I am saying is let's wait for the beta and the actual feedback from that before we make sweeping statements about how the game is too easy on anything but path of the damned. Okay?

IGN Article about PoE.

But will your knowledge of the land be great? .... ..... What's a paladin??? -
am I the only one that liked the models? Maybe I'm weird but I love the low-res look. Nope you aren't. I thought they looked fine. Plenty good enough considering you only see them on character creation and the equipment screen. They are considerably better than the pretty darn terrible Wastleland 2 character models that's for sure.
-
Because it isn't his real portrait. Calisca and Odema are both just using generic PC character portraits in the demo, Josh even said as much in one of the E3 threads because I asked. The only "final" portrait is supposedly Heodan's. That is one massive as hell assumption right there. It is the first 15 minutes of the game and blatantly meant as a tutorial. Did you honestly expect a Balor pit fiend? A full on raid by an army of Bandit's? A Tarrasque maybe? Let's wait for the actual beta before we start making guesses as to how challenging the game is or is not.

Giantbomb Quicklook on the 24th
Karkarov replied to Darji's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You did. I think this isn't "done" though. I noticed the human started 10 across the board with 8 points but the godlike started with multiple stats at 11, nothing below 10, and got the same 8 points. I doubt that is going to make it to live or else everyone will play a godlike because they get nothing but bonuses and no penalties. Also Josh said in another post all stats are supposed to have a minimum of 8 but I assume he was saying that is with racial penalties included. EDIT: I lied the human had like an 11 might and a 12 resolve but again... no penalty stat?!??!?!? -
Giantbomb Quicklook on the 24th
Karkarov replied to Darji's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I believe I noticed some skeletons with swords in the corners of that UI.... like something a user mock up once did hohohohoho... Great work by Josh on the video, and thank god it was Brad and Matt. I forget Rorie had worked there before so he was an obvious great choice for the video. -
Exactly. We already knew they were not going to prevent you from attempting to solo, so obviously they are not designing game elements like traps or puzzles assuming you have more than one character, because maybe you don't. That being said, the combat gameplay itself is being designed around the idea that you aren't alone and do have a party. Because if they don't design combat itself assuming you have a party than anyone who does have one will basically steam roll the game.

Giantbomb Quicklook on the 24th
Karkarov replied to Darji's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It starts 9am EST. Which is in roughly 40 minutes. It is a Quicklook EX which means someone from Obsidian will be there during the video and actually "guiding" them through the game. I expect it will just cover the same territory we showed off in E3.... or perhaps a early look at the backer beta. The critical thing is which staffer they get to do the actual sit down video with. Please god don't be Jeff and Dan... As far as Giantbomb itself goes it is a good site. I don't always go down for their official content but the forums are really active with a pretty solid community. It also helps the mods are all nice guys who don't put on "airs", much like our Obsidian forums here -
A few things. 1: It was easy to solo due to the D&D rules system being very easy to manipulate to become OP, that and lots of bugs+exploits. 2: Eternity doesn't use the D&D rules system... maybe not as easy to manipulate and become OP, and we don't know what bugs+exploits will exist (hopefully none). 3: No he did not say that, he said that they were not forcing you to use a team and you could try to solo the game if you wanted but they were not designing the game with solo in mind at all. He much later even said no one in the office has even attempted a solo run.

Voice Acting?
Karkarov replied to Dwarfare's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Did you know the only good surfacer is a dead surfacer? -
Eh I can see the appeal and how it could be a neat idea but I would rather not. Skipping ahead hundreds of years for the sequel rarely works that well, especially if you are keeping the same character which seems to be implied. No matter what happens in this game the connection to past events would be tenuous at best no matter how you slice it. For example in the US the Revolutionary War was obviously a huge thing. It started in 1775... roughly 239 years ago. It is still taught in schools and we take it seriously, it obviously helped mold the world of today what with America being a super power. But nothing happening today actually directly ties to it as an event, no big news happening now is concretely related. When an event that huge still only has tenuous ties to the here and now I can't imagine anything the PC and friends will get up to at a mid level adventure could possibly have more influence.

Baldur's Gate 3?
Karkarov replied to projectx's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
To be honest Baldurs Gate series in 2/3 doesn't take place in the vicinity of the titular city. So we can have new BG game take place in Sigil. The name for the BG series should be Swoard Coast or Bhaalspawn. Yeah in all fairness "Tales of the Sword Coast" would have been a better name for the series than an expansion. It could have been, for example, Tales of the Sword Coast: Baldur's Gate, and Tales of the Sword Coast: Shadows of Amn. -
Holy Avenger
Karkarov replied to Sarex's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Too bad he eventually ran into that Balor Pit Fiend whose hide it bounced off of and he got ripped in two from stem to stern! -
This isn't really Eternity related at all. Well Kark why are you posting it then? Good question. Many of us more than just remember the Infinity Engine games fondly, a few of us likely gravitated towards them in the first place because they were ultimately based on something we already knew and loved. Dungeons and Dragons. Not everyone on the forums obviously cares about that original pen and paper RPG as much as everyone else but for me it will always be a source of many good memories. So I feel the need to share a Kickstarter project that is sort of trying to share the history and story behind that game and the people who make it. A couple of whom I actually had the pleasure of meeting, in some cases not knowing it until it was too late. Anyway for those who hold the game at a special place in your heart check it out. It has 5 days to go and is only about 50% of the way funded. Fund it, don't fund it, hate it, whatever. I just wanted to throw it out there for consumption. Nothing forces you to take a party. Obsidian when asked has always said the same thing though. Would it be possible to solo the game? Maybe, but we are not designing the game with it in mind and aren't going to test it. Which means yes you can solo it, or no you cant depending on how you read the sentence. Either way assuming you "can" solo the game it should be really really hard to do so.

What will game cost on release?
Karkarov replied to kranecu's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I see your analogy but you are wrong. In example 1 where Obsidian just had 4 mil and they self fund they then get their 95k sales and boom.... they have their 4 mil back and can self fund again or go to kickstarter for the money and just have 4 mil in the till. In example 2 they had 0, we gave them 4 mil to make Eternity, then they get no sales so they are now back at 0 and either have to go to kickstarter again or lay people off and have nothing in the till and significantly fewer options on how to proceed. You see the key difference is in Example 1 the balance sheet is 4 mil and no one is in danger of losing their job. In example 2 the balance sheet is 0. -
What will game cost on release?
Karkarov replied to kranecu's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Doesn't matter what backwards tax law says. Kickstarter FUNDED the game. Therefore any money that came from Kickstarter is not a sale as that money was spent to make the game. When you give money on kickstarter you are not pre ordering a game, you are funding it. If you don't go and buy a copy after release then you were a 0 sale customer because your money was spent making the game and therefore generated 0 profit. -

And truthfully some people are stupid like me and really really want to support Obsidian on this one and might rebuy the game when they see it cheap just to give them a little boost. -

Except the game is feature locked and they already amended their original release date like a year ago. -
What will game cost on release?
Karkarov replied to kranecu's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I wonder how I missed like 50% of this thread earlier? Either way, yeah, this. When a dev says I need XYZ time to make a video game and then suddenly needs 6 months more it is never, ever, a good sign. It is stressful for them as a developer, cost ineffective, indicates either something is mismanaged, there are game breaking bugs, or the game just isn't that good. You don't want any of those things happening and unless we are willing to scrounge up another 4 mil telling them they can delay to 2016 and it is okay is well... not actually okay. Not only is it a professionalism thing to release on time, but they need to make money too and they aren't making a dime until the game releases. With the recent release of Original Sin at 39 bucks I will reiterate my earlier point though. This game will be 30-40 bucks on steam. So invest accordingly.
