Ah, but then we come to two points: 1. Monte Carlo was summing up what his argument in this thread has been, and there have been people making the argument that it should be removed because it offends, not why it offends but simply that it does, and so his point has merit. 2. If someone is justified in being offended does that automatically mean that it was wrong? Comedians often take the mock out of religion and creed, and quite often those groups they mock are offended, does that mean Comedians should not mock them? Calling someone's religion stupid and moronic is going to justifiable offend that person but does mean they get the right to censure you saying that? Just because someone IS justifiable offended doesn't mean they have the right to censure you. And who gets to decide that something is justifiably offensive or not? To whose standards? Where is the line between taking the piss and being nasty? And which groups get protection and which don't? I ain't gonna answer these questions, personally I'm thinking I need to step away from this thread very very carefully and think everyone else should too because no good can come from it, but damnit I do love playing with fire...

Damn it, I left that ****hole years ago once I realised Bioware was more interested in set pieces and ego stroking, don't tell me it's expanding over here? The games are still decently written right? They've not turned into sex-simulators yet have they? Sorry to butcher your quote like this, but I just wanted to highlight and discuss this notion which has been thrown around on this site a lot lately. However, it just seem counterintuitive to me, depending on what is actually meant here. So, do you (and/or others) mean: 1) the fact that someone is offended, doens't automatically mean that someone has done something wrong in offending them. 2) it is never wrong to offend other people. 3) something else If 1), then that's not really all that relevant, because you'd have a hard time finding anyone who disagrees with it. And 2), simply can't be true. The reason 1) doesn't apply, is that those who are offended, aren't (in their mind) offended just because. They are offended because of something, namely that they consider the rhyme wrong, presumably because they consider it damaging to a cause they consider morally worthy (sexual equality, or something in that regard). Now we can argue whether it is in fact a worthy cause, or whether the rhyme is indeed damaging to this cause. And even if we accept both, we can still argue wether the fact that it is harmful is enough to justify removing the limerick. But to invoke something like the quoted text, just seems like a belittling strawman*. *depending on what 3) could mean Time to nuke this site from orbit... So, let me ask you a question! Should cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed be censored because it causes offence? Many people of the Muslim faith find this offensive, they aren't offended just because right? Do they, as a religious group, have a right to not be offended by other people? What about Christians who are offended by homosexuality? Do they have a right not to be offended by gay people? While you answer that, let me just go grab something... *Legs it to his nuclear bomb shelter, where he sits peeking out*

PoE Sales?
FlintlockJazz replied to Palmtuna's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A million a month based on interviews with Feargus.Hmm interesting, thanks for the info. So either the money raised for Pillars only covered the additional costs of production, not the running costs, or Pillars was a lot cheaper to produce overall. If the former, then Pillars needs to raise at least 30 million to cover the running costs, not counting other games that they produced in this time period that can also go towards paying this (such as Stick of Truth, which did do well as I recall). Makes it harder to gauge whether Pillars is a financial success or not... I think it should be one million for the whole company, not only the PoE team. Oh I didn't assume it was just Pillars team but general running costs, which is why I mentioned not counting other games they produce in that time period, since it wouldn't have the pay the whole costs all by itself, but working out whether it is 'profitable' then becomes more... complicated. -

I actually feel like there is a bit too much VO as it is already. I would not like them to do more of it in future games, both because I prefer to read (or skim read) as I like and put more of it in my head and because VO requires 'locking down' the dialogue early, preventing them from just adding or changing dialogue as they go along like in the olden days (Monkey Island dialogue was pretty much made up by the programmers as they made the game, a lot of the dialogue was originally even just filler text they decided was actually pretty good).

PoE Sales?
FlintlockJazz replied to Palmtuna's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I was wondering if people were counting Steam and GOG's cut in there. As others have said, there are more costs other than salaries to count, better method would be to see if they have earned more than the Kickstarter raised for them, if so then it is a success. No one is wanting to know their paychecks, and no one said it was our business. We are just theorycrafting on how much they need to keep producing games. -
I believe this may be a prime example of a layer 8 issue, otherwise known as User Failure. I suggest turning yourself off and on again, perhaps also resetting to factory default by taking a long sharp implement and inserting into one of the holes on either side of your head unit. Just joking, but I really can't understand how anyone thinks this is more bland than most of the 'worlds' and settings in most other RPGs. It's one of the better settings, really well thought through, internally consistent and deep. I like it. Guess people really do need to cling to stereotypes and clichés to think a world has depth, it may be a bit 'dry' but that isn't a bad thing. People citing Dragon Age (any of them) as an example of good world-building immediately discounts your opinion to me, I find it to be the complete opposite and full of stock clichés and even ripped off ideas. Of course, this can be argued to be subjective (except for DA ripping others off, but BioWare have always taken things from others as 'inspiration'), you can think DA is a ripe setting just as I can think Pillars is, it doesn't really make any difference in the end as I will no doubt destroy you all and wipe your spawn from the face of the universe as part of my ascension to power anyway.

PoE abbreviation
FlintlockJazz replied to Uberwolfe's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I tend to just refer to it as Pillars for short. Just the way I roll, now excuse me I need to disappear back into the game... :D -
I've been having this bug myself, they haven't been appearing all over the place but there is always a group of three somewhere on the map. I suspect this may have something to do with Kana since they didn't start appearing until after I picked him up and used his summon skeletons chanter spell, which summons them in a group of three (which is the number they appear in). Could it be that it is respawning a group of skeletons I had summoned and still had around when I left a map?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it was confirmed that companions will in fact leave your party if you act against their wishes too much. [...] Exactly. And I think that's the only qualifier, and it'll probably come with 16 different warning signs along the way. With only two potential backups along the way, there's not going to be a lot of leeway when it comes to do's and don'ts. Well, actually three potential backups, one of your party of six is your main character after all (I'd be mighty impressed if someone managed to piss off their own character that much!).

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
FlintlockJazz replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I honestly don't know. I know you prefer option 1 but I also don't want to cost you too much money since I want PoE to be as financially successful for you that you can make more of them. :D -
Male or Female
FlintlockJazz replied to constantine's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I find that point about it being easier to RP an evil characer interesting because as a guy I find it easier to play more 'morally ambiguous' or aggressive character when they are female. Wonder if it's universal for both genders to find it easier to play evil characters when not of their own gender or if it's just me being weird... -
Male or Female
FlintlockJazz replied to constantine's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Usually male, but always have at least one female in the mix, sometimes end up with more females depending on the game. -
I agree about the Rogue and had this argument on these very boards ages ago. The Rogue is a holdover from D&D 1st ed, back when stealth was something only the Rogue did (and which was pretty much magical in it's implementation), used only to help it get the backstab and the party as a whole just wandered from room to room in the dungeon with no attempt at being stealthy, with each room being a separate encounter that seemed to live in it's own world as the fighting in it would not alert the monsters in the next room despite letting off fireballs and screaming. Due to Tradition we are now forced to have Rogues in most games, who ring-fence a set of skills which should really be universal adventuring skills in the same way fighting ability is a universal adventuring skill in order to give their existence meaning. The Rogue should be gutted and disembowled, his skillset and abilities dispersed to other classes, as Rogue is an attitude, a mindset, not a class.

GoG or Steam ?
FlintlockJazz replied to ruzen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
GOG man here. -
Well, the first question you would have to ask yourself if you lived in this world is: is my reincarnation truly me? And I don't mean "Is it all a big con?" Even with real reincarnation, is it really you coming out the other end if you have absolutely no memories of your past life? Let's say you erased someone's memories, and by erased I mean obliterated, destroyed them utterly so they will never come back, and then gave that person completely new memories and a completely new personality, is that the same person as before or is it a completely new person? If the previous personality was a serial killer who murdered babies after having sex with them, would the new personality be guilty of those crimes despite having no memory of them, no desire to perform them, and is even a saint? What about if you erased those memories but they sometimes did manage to come back, but only scraps, would that make a difference and would it matter how the person perceives them? Is the soul truly us or is a part of us the same way our arms or lungs or even our whole bodies are a part of us? Maybe we can't exist without our souls but maybe our souls can exist without us? If it's just spiritual energy that happens to jump from person to person then where do memories figure into all of this? They say memories define who we are, so if you take our memories do you take us? Could it be that we as ourselves only exist as long as there is a continuance of conciousness? If so, do we retain that continuance from one incarnation to the next or is there an interruption? Rambling thoughts of a tired Jazz.

I do recommend Brotherhood, the first half (less actually, possibly third) is a re-do, but then it splits off from the original anime and goes in a completely different direction and place, sticking closer to the original manga (which wasn't finished at the time of the original anime, which is why they made up their own second half). It's not just a bit different, but very different, and while the ending may be a matter of taste as to which one you prefer, I feel Brotherhood is tighter and more cohesive as a whole. I highly suggest you watch it if you haven't already, it's worth watching even if you have already seen the other anime, once you get past the re-tread of common beginning. Sorry had to fanboy! :D

All eventually, priority is human, orlan, godlike, not necessarily in that order. Dwarf too, since they don't get noticed so much these days despite being awesome.
