Some video card and display questions...
mkreku replied to LadyCrimson's topic in Skeeter's Junkyard
$130? This is what you should have gotten for those $130: Sapphire Radeon X1650PRO 256MB GDDR3. -
Naah, why would there be? Maybe if the bloody, mutilated corpse showed a nipple..

Vista gaming will be 10 to 15% slower than XP
mkreku replied to Fionavar's topic in Skeeter's Junkyard
We'll never know. But people usually want the latest version of everything, no matter if it's better or not. Microsoft would claim it was better and that's enough for most. I guess that depends on how you look at it. If I have a program that works in Windows ME but not in Windows 98, is it the fault of the third party developer or the OS? I would blame the OS. Halo 2 will demand Vista to be able to run. Why is that, do you think? Is it because Vista is such a giant leap forward in programming technology that it would be impossible to make Halo 2 run under Windows XP? I don't believe that. Actually, I could bet money on some amateur porting DirectX 10 to Windows XP within a year after it's been released. We'll see. -
Every game is a frustrating game for a Leafs fan

If Windows ME had been the only OS to choose from, and Microsoft had gone the usual route of not making the drivers backwards compatible, then yes, people would have bought crappy ME eventually. But Windows XP was released just over a year after ME, so people actually had a choice for once. So who knows, maybe the reason noone bought Windows ME was because it sucked, or because of XP being the newest version only a year after ME's release. I believe the latter. -
Ok, so the Leafs won.. in the shootout! Must be a first. Still, they got 48 shots on Auld! I am not worried, they're winning (sometimes..) and they're fighting hard. I knew they were going to have offensive problems this season, especially if Sundin fails to score, like he did tonite. But they also only allowed one goal against! That's awesome compared to last season. Unfortunately Kubina got hurt. He's already ben one of our absolutely best d-men, only Kaberle has been better. Raycroft has looked sharp so far! I'm so used to Toronto's off-season flops that Raycroft feels like a gift from heaven. For once something seems to pay off! Of course, we're four games in, but still! He hasn't stunk up the place, quite the opposite.

When you do, feel free to post your impressions on this board. I'm desperately looking for a new RPG to play on my Playstation 2. Problem is I've hated every cinematic jRPG I've played so far, but from what I've read this Final Fantasy is different. It's supposed to be open-ended and less cut-scene intensive. Also, it's gotten like 95% or more in every review I've seen! That must mean something.

Gothic and Gothic 2 also had every line spoken in full voice over. I'm sure there are others.

I have never changed the fan on any of my video cards.. :"> MY OVERCLOCKING SKILLZ ARE WEAK! -
Who said it was the main thing? Anyhow, removing climbing will make the gameworld seem a lot less.. interactive. Whenever you ran into a problem in the previous Gothic's, you could always improvize. A pack of wolves hunting you? Climb a tree. Having trouble finding your way in town? Climb onto a rooftop for a better view. Tired of solving quests and killing enemies? Go mountain climbing! But, alas, not anymore. Unfortunately, I am a weak creature. I thought of cancelling my preorder and wait for the reviews instead, but I don't seem to be able to do it. It's like my subconscious still has hopes for this buggy, simplified mess of a game. Damnit! And this is what I'll be getting in less than a week's time: http://gothicz.net/index.php?sekce=gothic3...ocument=fotkyce Note the Sleeper medallion. I will wear it day and night!!1

Why does it feel that whenever Microsoft (FINALLY) gets an OS to be working and virtually bug-free, they decide to release the next bloated version? I also can't understand people who are like, "Wow, Vista is released in only 11 days 12 hours and 43 minutes! I can't wait!!1". Don't they know it's an OS? It's supposed to hide in the background and wait until you, the end-user, wants to run an application, which is when it kicks in and starts said application in the fastest possible time, using as few system resources as is possible. Vista is quite the opposite. It will take hours to install, it will demand 15 GB of harddrive space (at least) and it will make your computer cry before you've even decided to start any applications. Windows Vista: the very definition of the term bloatware. -
All the programming courses I've read for the last several years on my university have been in Java. It's not because the language itself is particularly fast, effective or useful, it's because it is a high-level language that's easy to maintain, easy to get an overview of and it has extensive documentation. To be a coder, you need to learn a way of thinking that's very unnatural for humans. You have to learn to plan ahead (don't know what it's called in english, but you basically sit and draw squares, lines and circles on a paper to figure out how the different objects will work together). And lastly you'll have to learn the syntax and read the documentation of the language you're supposed to use. If you can manage that, you just need to do it more. My basic flaw is that when I get home, I have absolutely no desire to code in my spare time. That's how I know I'll never be a programmer for a game developer: the time and effort it takes to be on the cutting edge of technology is time and effort I just don't want to commit. Other than that, I think I'd make an excellent game programmer

I have the exact same setup as Ummi on my way (it still hasn't arrived), except that I opted for the ABIT AW9D-MAX (Intel 975X based) motherboard, so I can buy another Radeon X1950XTX if need be. After my experiences with the Geforce 7800 GS that I have right now, I'm going to try to steer clear of Nvidia for a while.

So I take it she had great boobs?

And my poor Leafs lost another one..

Yeah.. they've basically removed what made Gothic feel special and made.. something else. Something which I'm not sure I'm especially interested in any longer. I mean, what's left? Running in corridors (like in the KorOR-series) and combat? Gee, welcome Diablo clone #1451345.
-
I just read on the official forums that they removed climbing from Gothic 3. That's the one skill that made Gothic/Gothic 2 stand out from all the other RPG's I know of. I think I'm going to cancel my preorder.

Know what's annoying? We have the three finns in the entire world that doesn't care for hockey on our board.

Ok, at least this newsbit sounds comforting. Roughly translated from: http://www.eurogamer.de/article.php?article_id=68363

Woohoo! I woke up this morning and my butt wasn't red from being spanked! Then I knew something special had happened. But I didn't have time to check out the NHL news until I got to work (where I am writing this) to find out the fantastic score ) GO LEAFS GO! Nice to see the Penguins beat the crap out of Philly.. on their hometurf. I don't know why, but I get all warm and fuzzy inside when I see that the Flyers lost. The Penguins have secretly (well, I missed it) traded for Jarkko Ruutu, one of my favourite players, and a very underrated player at that. He will be extremely valuable to that team. Kyle Wellwood, 4 assists.. wow. The kid is really thriving on the first line. Imagine if he had size to go with those hands..

I'm hoping the Leafs will put up a fight tonight against Ottawa. That's all I demand; an honest attempt at winning the game. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt if we finally got some of our lines to gel too. Ok, so a decent fight and some positive news about the team. That's all I demand. At least two thirds of our first line looked real good last night: Wellwood and Sundin. Let's hope Ponikarovski can get started, or that Maurice finds someone else that's a better fit for Mats.
