  1. Clicky I thought people might find this interesting as we have had discussions on this exact subject. It is obviously hard to tell through a video but I think this might actually be a proper research on the subject.
  2. Why did this thread even evolve beyond post #1? Does the OP really want to have game where he has to go to the bathroom while infiltrating an enemy facility because he has been holding his bladder for twelve hours straight?
  3. Because it is a very simplistic argument that since it is forumulated in a not very strict manner can easily lead to things that wasn't intended by the original argument and which will be potentially very unpleasant. I actually don't think I ever wrote mistreatment. Instead I wrote that imprisonment is inhumane/immoral and that could be seen as a slippery slope but really isn't. It isn't because as I wrote in my last post I don't think that rehabilitation should be done with criminals running around in the open and being able to commit crimes, instead rehabilitation is an answer to the question that most people only answers with imprisonment and death penalty. As such the inhumane/immoral part must come to mean something along the lines of possibility but should be avoided if it doesn't create increased human suffering by avoiding it. That's a funny argument considering how much money is already spent on prisons. I can only answer it with the fact that a succesfull rehabiliation should lead to the person becoming a boon to society instead of a detriment and unless the person is physically broken to such a degree that he can't even commit crimes, it seems to me that it will always lead to a better economical situation than prisons which are really just a black hole for money. You are purposefully ignoring the crucial fact that most child rapists are adults, and that entails taking responsibility for one's actions. The state isn't anyone's babysitter. They are adults, but most legal systems take mental dieseases and insanity into account if relevant. The state is indeed everyones babysitter since it started having a monopoly on non-defensive violence, I do agree that the state in general should try no9t to babysit, but there are cases where there is little choice. Law is there for the good of society and not just the ones that are capable of living by its rules. I applaud your bravery in trying to enforce your view of law upon me, but must disagree. The current penal system is inhuman because it is a human right in my point of view for any human to not be detained if other options are open. This is because I wouldn't want to be detained if other options were open and I view anything that I wouldn't want to be subjected to as a human right. I'm a bit perplexed at your asking for alternatives as I have done little except flaunt my support for an alternative.
  4. Because we all know that augmented agents have huge pockets of nothingess inside their trenchcoats and as such could fit anything into it if they really tried. Somehow trying to explain bad design seems silly.
  5. Helooooooo slippery slope. As Gfted1 pointed out towards the second quote, these kinds of statements should be rethought or phrased in a very restrictive way. Modern ethics have moved beyond simple utilitarianism. I should also mention that people who are being rehabilitated should obviously be restricted, I'm just very annoyed by people who talk of imprisonment as an answer to anything. My belief is just that any society which is presumptious enough to take on the job that is law and order, should also try to do so in the most humane way possible, and not falling for silly "greater good", revenge or even arguments to imhumanity, towards the people that is is concerned. Edit: Also, I do realize that rehabilitation isn't a switch and we can't perfectly rehabilitate everyone yet, but we can only become better if we start caring for it and move towards systems that are humane first and foremost. Edit2: Changed basic utilitarianism to simple utilitarianism to reflect the fact that their arguments don't even contain the weighing of everyones case equally, which is an inherent attribute of utilitarianism.
  6. I don't play sports games. If I did though I would have to argue that their goal should be to entertain and not be realistic. Don't forget though that realism can and often is a vehicle of fun. I'm not arguing that all games should strive for being unrealistic or anything like that, I'm simply saying that talking about realism as if it were a goal in itself is misguided.
  7. Double posts makes me a sad panda.
  8. I should add that I too think that even mentioning realism as an end-goal in a games discussion should be legal cause for lynching, as realism isn't inherently fun and as such have nothing to do in my games, unless it is a vehicle for increased fun.
  9. You are not alone in being interested in such a move, and I don't think that it would be an unsuccessful move. The problem is that it would require a rethinking to the now standard forumula of dungeon (or an abstraction of that theme) -> loot -> money. I think most people would like a rethinking of the formula, as most people, I believe so at least, aren't interested in looting the small stuff, but rather getting that sword+1 or similar magical items, and then using or selling them. The players inventory would probably consist of slots for armour (boots, gloves, body etc.), two-three weapon slots, one or more potion slots, an alchemy bag (where the inventory of olden times will forever lie in disgrace), quiver and possibly more as the setting require. There should also be a safehouse with a chest for storing items that could possibly of use later but which aren't carried around. As mkreku mentioned Desu Ex, I will point out that it was a marvelous step in this direction, as it involved less items than most RPGs. It did have problems with the large guns being unreasonably large but it did move succesfully towards an inventory tetris that wasn't about carrying uselsss junk but which worked in forcing you to carry a reasonable combination of arms and utilities. Another strong point of Desu Ex was that you got most of the money from doing quests (IIRC) and not from selling vendor-junk as many RPGs want you to do. Another benefit of such a direction would be the elimination of fetch quests. Unless I'm missing something then such a direction should work and should be more fun. At least for people who think like me.
  10. I'm always against death penalty for the reason Gorgon alluded to in his recent post, I believe humanity isn't something that can be stripped away and as such the killing of humans is always immoral. Also, anyone know whether pedophilia is a mental disease? No matter what, such laws should always distinguish between the likely motivation behind the rape, is the subject an insane sadist or a pedophile? Can either of them be treated? As you guys may be able to read, I'm very pro-rehabilitation as both imprisonent and execution is inhumane.
  11. So you enjoy wasting your money? Spare a coin, good sir? I'll have to add a Europa Universalis 3 game as an indian minor to that list, as well as Company of Heroes.
  12. Like women of ill repute? I would have suggested a cheap game but your suggestion works too.
  13. I agree.
  14. I have had quite good experiences with the 8800 GTS 640MB so I don't think there would be major disappointments with that. By now I would porbably buy a GT though. I'm pretty sure I would end up buying the 8800GT in Pidesco's example unless I would be able to use the money that was saved for something of actual value.
  15. Just thought that I would contribute with a quote from a leader in The Economist: I guess you could argue that he was good in the very earliest, but to call him a good guy is to disregard too much.
  16. So we should fine parents if their kids gets their fingers on an 18+ game? Also my perhaps biggest problem with the government getting involved in this is that I still haven't seen a reasonable amount of studies showing that kids are damaged by violent video games, it seems to be simply a widely supported assumption.
  17. Do you have the graphical capabilities of the game maxed in those screens?
  18. This might show that I haven't actually followed Fallout 3 much, but why is VATS bullet-time? I thought that VATS was just pause-for-shooting. Also why would you dislike it? Personally I find it to be the most reasonable realtime mirroring of fallout's gory crotch-shooting gameplay gameplay (if we ignore that Bethesda isn't willing to put in crotch-shooting).
  19. Hardly. It is only the basic premises of the GTA games that have stayed the same, otherwise most everything changes. From your point of view every DnD CRPG is the same DnD CRPG over and over again.
  20. FOR THE EMPEROR. Just saw some scans of a PCGamer article on DoW2: This Relic guy has the right mindset. It also mentions wargear as being droppable and pickupable, as well as drop pods being able to smash infantry that it lands on. Otherwise it is mostly just DoW2 will have a lot of CoH features. Also: We technically already knew that but it can't be mentioned enough. I seriously can't wait for this game.
  21. That game was really cool. I do think that chess works best on a regular board on a table, but perhaps I'm just old fashioned.
  22. In no particular order: Metal Gear Solid Deus Ex Caesar III Simcity 3000 Dawn of War Portal Jagged Alliance 2 Baldurs Gate 2 (Honorable mention to 1 since it introduced me to CRPG gaming) Europa Universalis 2 (3 is better but I've played this one a lot) Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven Fallout 2 Imperialism 2 The elder scrolls III: morrowind Starcraft Jazz jackrabbit 2 Unreal Tournament Alpha Centauri Legend (SNES game) Heroes of Might and Magic III Yeas I realize that there are too many games here, but I couldn't do something like a top ten without it being random and mood-based. I guess Diablo 2 deserves an honorable mention for best co-op gamplay since the dawn of time (legend). Also Gothic 2. And No one lives forver. Edit: Totally forgot about Outlaws.
  23. If I remember correctly you just have to mouse over it and a popup comes up, but my memory is fuzzy. Halfway through skilled witcher should be around 35 or 45, can't remember which but probably 35 since you found the fights difficult. Or perhaps I was just lucky...
  24. Which level were you?
  25. And it gives you an unprecedented amount of Choices! You can like choose between cooking your food or ordering it in! Surely the RPG of the millenum. Also you have a choice of gender, flabbergasting!
