D. C. Fontana writer and story editor for a number of television shows over the years, but maybe best remembered for her work for Star Trek over the Original, Animated and Next Generation shows.  I just finished watching THE FANTASTIC JOURNEY series she was story editor for.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

I remember Rene best from Benson. I thought he was the funniest thing ever in that show, at the time, the way he straight-man bounced off Robert Guillaume. His DS9 chr. was one of the things I liked about that show.

Wow, I should really stay away from this thread when I'm not in the brightest of moods.

Was not familiar with the person, but was with the art. A very iconic style that helped color the tone of an era.

Syd Mead, 86

Easily the greatest Sci-fi artist of all time, and probably forever more. Now the vision of the future is so diluted, over-shared, crowded. Never again will their be such a stark authoritative vision of the future brushed into the zeitgeist.

A very impressive resume to his name. R.I.P.

Great, means they'll be playing a lot of Rush on the radio here.

Wasn't a huge Rush person, outside of those few earlyish hits, but another one of those "my childhood past is dying" reminders. RIP  :(

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

Christopher Tolkien, who managed to posthumously compile, edit and publish much of his father's Middle-Earth work, passed at the ripe age of 95.

Of the JRR-Christopher books, I only ever read Hurin, which was pretty messed up but decent. Never was the biggest Tolkien prose fan, but nevertheless RIP.

Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protests nor force can touch it. Reasoning is of no use. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be disbelieved - indeed, the fool can counter by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can just be pushed aside as trivial exceptions. So the fool, as distinct from the scoundrel, is completely self-satisfied. In fact, they can easily become dangerous, as it does not take much to make them aggressive. For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.
