Also a Tumblr answer on Animancer class.
https://jesawyer.tumblr.com/post/167054500361/hi-josh-i-wondered-if-your-team-ever-considered

Would be cool as a Science Mage. Maybe an Alchemist~ using Throwable Potions and having some Unique Scroll mechanics. Having bonuses to crafting foods and potions.

Maybe some Blue Mage mechanics too (Final Fantasy, skills from monsters).

Either having a mechanized/scienced Adra Gem/Stone Trinket that they use as a power channeling device, or a potion belt :p like a Grimoire, but stores chosen potions (Fireball Potion etc.).

Per Rest Casting ;) replenishing Potions during rest. Could be a Sciencian Vancian answer in Pillars.

I've always favored animancy being tied to skills (and possibly a background) and equipment rather than tying it to the class format so I'm glad there aren't any plans to make it one aside from the pet-based approach, which doesn't seem to have gained much traction.

Here's some potentially good news for would-be modders out there: Sawyer expects the process of making custom subclasses to relatively easy (compared to BG II, at least).

Edit: Looks like Sawyer also posted a dialogue sample.

I think it would be cool if a new class came about as a result of Animancy.  Would be a cool growth aspect of the PoE universe where you could have a science based class and subclasses that only exist as a result of new tech from Animancy breakthroughs.

Edit:  This way you avoid narrowing Animancy down to a class when its such a broad subject in PoE.

Edit: Looks like Sawyer also posted a dialogue sample.

That post has led to a rather long series of tweets on Obsidian's mostly-internal (IIRC, they shared it with inXile for Torment) conversation tool.

First, this long thread of tips that an individual or organization building such a tool should consider.

Then come the fun examples-- several "map view" shots of conversations and scripted interactions.  Josh says that he really likes how their tool presents information visually, and how you can "quickly gauge what kind of conversation it is by its shape."  He then posts:

"one at the end of a critical path story element"

"an (in progress) companion hub"

"a big quest character with a flashback sequence"

"a small scripted interaction"

"the biggest scripted interaction (247 notes, 3997 words)"

And, lastly, the full view of part of one scripted interaction, with some insights on the Watcher's options in maintaining shipboard discipline.

(n.b., in reading all of these, "red are NPC or companion nodes. blue are player responses. dark nodes/replies are "ghosted" (duplicates) from another source.")

Man, that software is pretty cool.

One of my dreams (I have many) is to write a fiction book. I've always thought about writing software to structure the book, even going so far as to prove consistencies across time. Orderings, change, state, constants, etc.

I was super impressed by the dialog he revealed on the one post. The evil option was particularly diabolical! And the reactions of the crew were very satisfying if you like to go the evil route. Not that I ever would! I’m a good guy!

If that’s a taste of things to come, the writing will be improved for Deadfire.

Looking at the original question-asker there, they speak about their desire to romance Tekehu.

Tekehu.

Who the hell are these people who want to romance Tekehu and where are they hiding?  And why do they hate Dwarves so much?

You know tentacle hentai movies? Those people.

Let's call them cthulhuphiles.

Personally I am fine with all that.  I like that he made it clear not all companions will be down for a romance with you, and left the door open to companions having their own romances.

I have repressed all knowledge of that, so that probably explains it.  Are you saying that we must banish them?  Or that Dwarves must be given tentacle-beards to get them on our side?

Definitely. Maybe not all dwarves. That is a sea-dwarves only thing.

Edit: We need more different dwarves after all. The more kinds of dwarves there are, the more people will find their kind of dwarves. Elf-dwarves for example (called a dwelf), romantic dwarves (dwarcy), dark-dwarves and light-dwarves (dwark/dwight), LGBT-dwarves (dweer) and japanese schoolgirl dwarves (mini-san) all pretty much hated by the conservative living-under-the-surface dwarves (simply called dwarf or cisdwarf).

Where does the Kraken fit into all of this?

It fits wherever you want it to fit... *cue porn music*

Technically, Josh confirmed LGBT companions.  No indication yet as to whether those companions can become romantically interested in the Watcher.

And this should surprise no one, by the way.  New Vegas was praised in several circles for the mostly understated way it handled Arcade and Veronica's sexuality.  Even in Pillars 1, Maneha was very clearly interested in Pallegina, and they were gender-flexible in all the language in establishing character backgrounds and past-life flashbacks (e.g., "he was my lover" and "she was my lover" both being options available to everyone).

On a related note, see this tweet from a week or two ago.  (Kate is a Narrative Designer on Deadfire.)

Lol guys XD, also getting a little into territory that I'm not sure the mods are okay with. Then again, we've got that brothel in Defiance Bay.

Missed opportunity that brothel: so should have had a kraken in there as one of the options....

You absolutely sure about that? They're going to have to start soon anyhow if they want to stay on schedule for a first quarter 2018 release. Josh Sawyer has set a personal deadline of March 2018, but not gonna hold his feet to the fire over it since it's not an official release date and they shouldn't use it as a hard release date if they need some more time.

Though they do have to use the marketed release date when they set up one because they have to tell all of their advertisers and set up media releases, etc.
